How to Use Steam Tags and Reviews to Find Games Like the PS2 Classics You Remember

Use the genre, mechanics, camera, and mood you remember to search Steam tags. Then read reviews for reception and practical caveats—not as proof that a game resembles your PS2 favorite.

Start with what you remember about the game—not just that it was on PS2. Name the genre, combat, camera, mood, setting, or multiplayer experience you want to find again. Search Steam with that small cluster of ideas, then use tags to discover candidates and reviews to judge how well each one plays. Tags can help surface similarities; review scores measure reception, not whether a game recreates your particular memory.

Turn a PS2 memory into useful search terms

A console generation is a broad label, not a precise description of what made a game memorable. Steam tags cover qualities such as genre, mechanics, visuals, viewpoint, themes, mood, and player activities. Translate your memory into those qualities before searching. Valve explains how tags are used for browsing and recommendations in its Steam Tags documentation.

  • Genre: action RPG, platformer, survival horror, racing, or another recognizable category.
  • Mechanics: melee combat, stealth, exploration, rhythm-based action, or puzzle solving.
  • Viewpoint and presentation: third-person camera, fixed camera, cel-shaded visuals, or a particular visual style.
  • Mood and setting: eerie, comedic, urban, fantasy, or a story-focused atmosphere.
  • Player activity: solo play, local co-op, or another mode you want to share.

Pick the few traits that mattered most. A game can share a genre with a favorite and still feel very different if its camera, pace, or mood is wrong.

Search Steam with a focused cluster of tags

Steam search can find games by name, tag, or description, and its discovery materials describe narrowing results with tag and feature filters. Valve’s Discovery Update guide explains those discovery tools. The current controls and labels may change, so check the live Steam store interface.

  • Harry comes to life - his internal voice guides the player through the game.
  1. Open Steam’s store search and enter a descriptive term or a game title that captures part of what you remember.
  2. Use the tag filters to narrow the results. Start with a relevant genre, then add one or two meaningful mechanics, moods, settings, or presentation traits.
  3. Review the resulting store pages and adjust the tags if the list is too broad or misses the feel you want.

A focused search such as a genre plus a combat style or mood is usually more useful than searching only for “retro.” Treat any match as a lead: inspect its store page to confirm details such as player mode, controller support, operating system, and other features you care about.

Read tags as discovery clues, not promises

Steam tags are applied by players and moderators and can evolve. They help describe games and influence browsing visibility and some recommendation mechanisms. Valve says the top 20 tags affect browsing and similarity mechanisms, with the first several receiving greater prominence; less common tags can carry more identifying value than broad ones such as “Action.”

Madagascar - PlayStation 2 (Renewed)
  • 11 action-packed, movie-based chapters that take you from Manhattan to the jungle
  • Become each zoo animal as you play - using Alex's claws, Marty's long jump, Melman's helicopter spins and Gloria's butt smash to make your way back to the wild
  • Collect high scores in the wild bonus games -- Shuffleboard, Tiki Golf and Lemur Rave

That makes overlapping tags useful for building a shortlist, but it does not mean two games with similar tags will play alike. Valve specifically cautions that a tag-driven comparison is not a direct reflection of Steam’s “More Like This” algorithm. Use tag overlap to find possibilities, then compare the specific qualities that matter to you.

Use reviews to judge reception and practical fit

Steam reviews tell you how players describe their experiences and whether they recommend a game. They do not establish that the game resembles a PS2 classic. A well-reviewed candidate may still miss the combat, pacing, or atmosphere you are looking for.

When a candidate looks promising, use review sorting in Steam’s store interface to find relevant perspectives. Look for comments about the details that would change your decision: control feel, difficulty, pacing, performance, or a gap between the store’s tags and the experience players describe. Read more than a headline score when those details matter.

Steam Support notes that the default review score excludes reviews written during periods Steam classifies as off-topic. Steam also uses review data to determine how individual reviews are sorted and shown. Treat the overall score as one reception signal, and the review text as a way to investigate practical caveats.

Compare candidates on the qualities you remember

When you have a shortlist, compare games on the same axes rather than asking only which one has the highest score or most tag overlap.

What to compare What to check
Genre and core mechanics Does the game use the kind of combat, exploration, stealth, or other loop you want?
Camera and presentation Does its viewpoint and visual style resemble the experience you remember?
Mood, setting, and story Does it share the tone or world you want, and how central is the story?
Pace and difficulty Do player descriptions suggest a similar rhythm and challenge?
Era and relationship to PS2 games Is it a port of an older game, or a newer game drawing inspiration from that era?
Practical features Does the store page confirm the player mode, controller support, operating system, and other requirements that matter to you?

Know whether you want an inspiration or an actual port

“PS2-inspired” and “a port of an older game” are different kinds of recommendation. A newer title may borrow a genre, visual style, or design sensibility without reproducing a particular classic. A port brings an older game to a current platform, though its availability and features still need checking on the individual store page.

A PC Gamer feature published October 5, 2026 treats modern sixth-generation-inspired games separately from ports of Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, and Xbox-era favorites. It describes Promise Mascot Agency as drawing on influences including Disaster Report and Persona 4, and Hi-Fi Rush through rhythm action, cel-shaded visuals, and Devil May Cry-style combat. These examples illustrate inspiration rather than exact replicas; the feature is not an exhaustive ranking.

Use Steam’s personalized discovery as a second route

Steam also offers routes such as a Discovery Queue, a Recommendation Feed, curator reviews, and recommendations informed by gameplay and friend activity. They can help once Steam has signals about your tastes, but personalization may reflect your broader play habits and overlook an unusual one-off favorite. Try them alongside deliberate tag searches, not instead of them.
