To download one Steam Workshop item with SteamCMD, use workshop_download_item <AppID> <PublishedFileID>. Find the game’s AppID and the item’s PublishedFileID, run the command in SteamCMD, then check the configured SteamCMD directory for steamapps/workshop/content/<AppID>/<PublishedFileID>. This workflow is described in Steam Community guides; Valve’s located Workshop documentation covers SteamCMD for testing uploads and updates, not this download command.
What you need before downloading
- The game’s AppID: the numeric identifier for the game on Steam.
- The item’s PublishedFileID: the numeric identifier for the Workshop mod. Community guides say to find it in the item’s Workshop page URL.
- SteamCMD: installed and launched according to Valve’s distribution instructions. Setup steps vary by platform, and the cited sources do not provide an official installation link.
Steam Community guides describe the command and identifiers, but they do not establish that every game or Workshop item can be downloaded this way.
Download a Workshop mod with SteamCMD
- Open the Workshop page for the mod and copy its numeric PublishedFileID from the URL.
- Identify the game’s AppID.
- Log in to SteamCMD as appropriate for the game and item. Community examples show anonymous and account login approaches, but do not establish a login method that works universally.
- At the SteamCMD prompt, enter
workshop_download_item <game AppID> <PublishedFileID>, replacing both placeholders with the actual numbers. For example, the command’s structure isworkshop_download_item 123456 987654321; use the identifiers for your game and item, not these illustrative numbers. - Read SteamCMD’s output, then inspect
steamapps/workshop/content/<AppID>/<PublishedFileID>beneath the SteamCMD installation or configured directory. - Follow the game’s own instructions to install or enable the downloaded files. Workshop content formats and installation locations differ by game.
How to find the downloaded files
A Steam Community guide describes the output location as steamapps/workshop/content/<AppID>/<PublishedFileID> under the SteamCMD directory. The exact full path depends on where SteamCMD is installed or configured. Use the AppID and PublishedFileID as directory names when checking the path.
If the files are not there, check SteamCMD’s command output and confirm that you used the intended game and item identifiers. The cited sources do not establish a definitive cause for download failures, so consult the game’s Workshop or mod instructions for access requirements.

Alternative: use the Steam Client console
A separate Steam Community guide describes downloading through the Steam Client console with download_item <AppID> <WorkshopID>. It says the console reports the download location when the operation completes. This is a community-described alternative, not a Valve guarantee; the source does not establish that it works for every game or item.

Can you download several mods at once?
A Steam Community discussion shows a user composing multiple item commands in one SteamCMD invocation, but reports both failure and success cases. Treat multi-item use as a pattern to test against the target game and current SteamCMD behavior, not a guaranteed bulk-download recipe. For a reliable workflow, verify each item’s result in SteamCMD output and check its expected directory.

What Valve’s documentation does—and does not—confirm
Valve’s Steam Workshop Implementation Guide discusses SteamCMD for creating and updating Workshop items for testing; it does not document workshop_download_item for retrieving existing items. In that upload-and-testing context, Valve says: “This should only be used for testing purposes, as the tool requires the user to enter their Steam credentials (something we don’t want customers to have to do).” That warning concerns the documented testing integration; it does not establish the authentication requirements for the community-described download command.
