Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 controllers can act as mouse-like pointers: move one or both over a flat surface to control the HOME Menu or compatible software. It is not a universal setting for every game—each game must support mouse controls.
How to use Joy-Con 2 as a mouse
-
Attach the Joy-Con 2 strap before use, as Nintendo’s support instructions direct. Nintendo’s UK FAQ says a strap is not always necessary, but some games may require one and it can be more comfortable. Check the game’s instructions as well.

Place the controller on a flat, suitable surface, then move it as you would a mouse. You can use either one Joy-Con 2 or both, depending on the software.
-
Use the pointing controls on the HOME Menu or in software that supports mouse input. Nintendo also names the eShop and Nintendo Switch Online applications as places where mouse controls can be used.

Nintendo Neon Purple/Neon Orange Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Nintendo’s instructions establish how to use the feature but do not detail the sensor’s internal tracking technology, so it is best understood simply as mouse-like pointing rather than assumed to match a desktop mouse in every situation.
Does mouse mode work with every Switch 2 game?
No. Mouse controls work only where software supports them. The HOME Menu accepts mouse controls, but support in games is title-specific; having Joy-Con 2 does not change the controls in every game. Nintendo’s support information does not provide a complete current list of compatible titles, so check a game’s current Nintendo store page, developer information, or in-game control settings before relying on mouse input.

Where to use the controller
Choose a clear, flat surface with room to move the controller. Nintendo cautions that glass and strongly reflective surfaces may not work well, while some materials and fabrics can interfere with the sensor. An uneven surface, such as a lap, may also cause problems.
- Good starting point: a smooth, flat table.
- Use caution: glass, reflective surfaces, fabrics, and uneven areas.
- Protect the surface: avoid sharp edges and protrusions, and do not use a surface that can be easily scratched.
Nintendo recommends wiping dust or dirt away and suggests a mousepad or mat to help protect the surface. A pad is optional; Nintendo does not state that it is required or that a particular pad improves tracking. A suitable flat table is also an option.

- These updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have a color scheme inspired by Deep Cut from the Splatoon franchise. They have HD rumble, easy-to-use motion and mouse controls, and a C Button for easy GameChat* access (available in compatible games).
Can you use Joy-Con 2 on your lap?
At an April 2025 media event, Nintendo Switch 2 producer Kouichi Kawamoto told AP through a translator: “We have made adjustments so that you can control the mouse on your pants.” That comment describes a possible use, not a guarantee for every fabric or position. Nintendo’s practical guidance warns that some materials and fabrics can interfere with the sensor and that uneven surfaces may cause problems, so a flat table remains the more dependable choice.
