systemctl is the command-line interface for the systemd manager. Use it to inspect a unit, start or stop it in the current session, restart or reload a service, control whether it starts at boot, and investigate failures. The most important distinction is between runtime state and boot-time policy: start changes what is running now, while enable installs the links that make a unit start automatically later. This guide shows the commands, explains their side effects, and gives a recovery path when a unit fails.

What systemctl manages
Systemd organizes operating-system resources as units. Service units normally end in .service, but the manager also handles targets, sockets, paths, timers, slices, swap units, and snapshots. You can usually omit the suffix when a name is unambiguous, although writing example.service makes a command and its logs clearer.

A command has the general form systemctl [options] command unit. Operations that change the system normally require administrator privileges, so use sudo for them. Read-only queries such as status, is-active, and listing commands often work without it, subject to local permissions.
How to inspect services and units
Start with inspection. It tells you whether a unit exists, whether it is active now, and whether it is configured to be activated at boot.

| Purpose | Command | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Human-readable state and recent log lines | systemctl status sshd.service |
Loaded state, enabled or disabled status, active state, main process, recent messages, and the last exit reason. |
| Concise runtime check | systemctl is-active sshd.service |
Whether the service is currently active; useful in scripts and quick checks. |
| Concise boot-policy check | systemctl is-enabled sshd.service |
Whether install links for automatic activation exist. |
| All loaded service states | systemctl list-units --type=service --all |
Active, inactive, failed, and other states for service units known to the manager. |
| Installed unit files | systemctl list-unit-files |
Unit files available on disk and their enablement state, including units not currently loaded. |
status is the best first check for a person at a terminal. The is-* commands provide a compact result when another command or script only needs a state check. Exact output varies with the systemd and distribution version installed on your Linux system.
How do I start, stop, or restart a systemd service?
Start a service now
sudo systemctl start example.service
start asks systemd to activate the unit in the current session. Systemd resolves dependencies while creating the job, so starting one unit can also pull in units it requires. A successful command means the activation job was accepted; verify the resulting state with systemctl status example.service or systemctl is-active example.service.
Stop a service now
sudo systemctl stop example.service
stop deactivates the unit for the current session. Units that depend on it can also be affected when their requirements can no longer be satisfied. Stopping a service does not remove its boot-time enablement; a later boot or target transition may start it again unless you disable that policy.
Restart a service
sudo systemctl restart example.service
restart performs a stop followed by a start. It starts the unit even if it was inactive, then resolves the dependencies needed for activation. Existing client connections may be interrupted, so use a restart when a full process reset is acceptable rather than as a routine substitute for a configuration reload.
What is the difference between systemctl reload and daemon-reload?
These commands operate on different layers and should not be treated as synonyms.

| Command | Reloads | Typical use | Connection impact |
|---|---|---|---|
sudo systemctl reload example.service |
The service application’s own configuration | Ask a running daemon to reread its configuration without replacing its process. | Usually avoids the interruption of a restart, but only if the service implements reload support. |
sudo systemctl daemon-reload |
Unit files and drop-ins read by the systemd manager | Run after editing a unit file, adding a drop-in, or changing its dependencies. | Does not itself restart or reload the service process. |
sudo systemctl reload-or-restart example.service |
Service configuration, with a restart fallback | Use when you prefer a reload but need the unit restarted if reload is unsupported. | A restart fallback can interrupt existing connections. |
A service may not support reload. In that case systemd reports that reload is unavailable; choose restart or use reload-or-restart when its fallback behavior is acceptable. Conversely, running daemon-reload after editing a unit file does not apply an application’s changed configuration unless you separately reload or restart the service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I enable or disable a service at boot?
Enable without starting
sudo systemctl enable example.service
enable creates the installation links that connect a unit to its configured boot target or another activation point. It changes future activation policy; it does not start the process now. This separation lets you prepare a service for the next boot while leaving the current session unchanged.
Enable and start immediately
sudo systemctl enable --now example.service
The --now option combines enablement with immediate activation. Use it when you want the service running now and automatically started on subsequent boots.
Disable and stop immediately
sudo systemctl disable --now example.service
disable removes the unit’s boot-time installation links. Adding --now also stops an active instance in the current session. Without --now, a currently running service keeps running until it is stopped separately.
Mask a unit to block every normal start
sudo systemctl mask example.service
Masking makes a unit unusable by linking it to a null target. Manual starts and dependency-driven starts are blocked until you remove the mask:

sudo systemctl unmask example.service
Use a mask when merely disabling boot activation is not strong enough—for example, while diagnosing software that repeatedly attempts to start a service. Check systemctl status if a start unexpectedly reports that the unit is masked.
Runtime state versus boot-time policy
Four commands answer four different questions:
start: should this unit be active in the current session?stop: should this unit be inactive in the current session?enable: should systemd install links for automatic activation?disable: should those automatic-activation links be removed?
Because the dimensions are independent, a service can be active but disabled, inactive but enabled, active and enabled, or inactive and disabled. Use is-active to inspect the first dimension and is-enabled for the second. If a unit is enabled but does not start, inspect its status and dependencies rather than enabling it again.
Editing a unit file safely
When you change a unit file, systemd must reread the manager’s copy before the new settings can take effect. A common workflow is:
- Edit the unit file or its drop-in using your distribution’s normal administrative method.
- Ask the manager to reread unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload - Apply the changed process settings with a restart:
sudo systemctl restart example.service - Confirm the result:
systemctl status example.service
If you changed only the application’s configuration and did not change the unit file, skip daemon-reload and use the service’s supported reload operation. If the daemon has no reload implementation, use reload-or-restart or a deliberate restart.
Understanding dependencies and disruptive operations
Systemd does not treat a service as an isolated process. Unit relationships can pull required units in when you start something and can make stopping one unit affect units that rely on it. Inspect those relationships with:

systemctl list-dependencies example.service
Review the dependency tree before making broad changes on a production host. The isolate operation is particularly disruptive: it switches to a target and can stop processes outside the new target, including a graphical environment or the terminal you are using. Treat mask and especially isolate as deliberate maintenance actions, not routine troubleshooting commands. If you are working remotely, confirm that the target will retain the access path you need before isolating it.
Why is my systemd service failing?
Use the service status and its journal as a two-part diagnostic. Red Hat’s systemd guidance identifies journalctl as the command for viewing information about systemd activity in its logs.
systemctl status example.service
journalctl -u example.service -b
The -u filter selects the unit, and -b limits the view to the current boot. Read the first clear error rather than only the final “failed” line. Common findings include a masked unit, a missing dependency, permission problems, or an invalid ExecStart command.
Check whether the unit is masked
If status reports masked, unmask it before attempting another start:
sudo systemctl unmask example.service
sudo systemctl start example.service
Do not unmask blindly on a system where the mask was an intentional safety control; establish why it was created first.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Check dependency failures
Run systemctl list-dependencies example.service and inspect the status of any required unit that is inactive or failed. Fix the underlying dependency, then retry the original service. Starting the top-level unit repeatedly without correcting a required unit only recreates the same job failure.
Check permissions and ExecStart
Journal messages may show that the service account cannot read a file, bind to a resource, or execute the configured command. Verify paths, ownership, executable permissions, and the exact ExecStart value in the loaded unit. A typo in the command or a path that exists only in an interactive shell is enough to make activation fail.

sudo systemctl reset-failed example.service
reset-failed clears systemd’s recorded failed state. It does not repair a bad command, permission issue, or missing dependency. Use it after correcting the cause, or when clearing a start-limit condition is necessary before trying again.
A practical command sequence
For a service that should run now and after reboot, use this sequence:
- Confirm that the unit exists:
systemctl list-unit-files. - Inspect its current state:
systemctl status example.service. - Start it:
sudo systemctl start example.service. - Verify runtime state:
systemctl is-active example.service. - Enable future activation:
sudo systemctl enable example.service, or combine steps three and five withsudo systemctl enable --now example.service. - If it fails, read
journalctl -u example.service -b, inspect dependencies, correct the reported cause, and retry.
For a unit-file change, insert sudo systemctl daemon-reload before the restart. For an application-only configuration change, use the service’s supported reload instead, choosing a restart fallback only when an interruption is acceptable.
Version and distribution considerations
Systemd options and unit availability vary by systemd version and Linux distribution. Service units commonly use the .service suffix, but the same manager may expose targets, sockets, paths, timers, slices, swaps, and snapshots. Check the local systemctl(1) manual page before relying on a newer subcommand or option, especially in scripts intended to run across multiple distributions. The names shown here are the standard forms documented by upstream systemd and Red Hat for current service-management workflows.
