How to Use systemd to Restart an FFmpeg YouTube Stream After a Server Reboot

Use an enabled systemd service to start FFmpeg after reboot, configure restart behavior, and diagnose why process restarts do not guarantee recovery from every network interruption.

To start an FFmpeg YouTube stream automatically after a Linux server reboots, run FFmpeg from a systemd service, enable that service at boot, and set a restart policy for when the process exits. If FFmpeg needs network configuration before starting, add a dependency on network-online.target—but make sure the server’s network manager has a working wait-online service.

Before you create the service

Test the command and confirm FFmpeg’s path

First, run the complete FFmpeg command interactively as the same Linux user you plan to use for the service. Confirm the input is available, the command reaches YouTube, and the stream appears to be receiving data in YouTube Live Control Room. Find the executable path on the server and use that absolute path in the unit; package locations can vary.

FFmpeg options apply in order: input options go before the relevant -i, and output options go before the output URL. The documented command shape is ffmpeg [global_options] [input_options] -i input [output_options] output_url. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and test the exact command before putting it in ExecStart.

Get the current YouTube destination and key

Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s instruction is: “Copy your YouTube stream key from the Live Control Room and paste it into your encoder.” If you choose encrypted delivery, use the RTMPS server URL shown there; RTMPS is RTMP over TLS. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions rather than assuming a URL or key is permanent.

Protect the stream key

A stream key is a credential. Avoid putting it in a command that unrelated users can read. Store it in a protected configuration or environment file, restrict access to the service account, and check local systemd documentation for the supported way to load it. Do not paste a real key into a publicly shared unit file, support post, or log.

Create a systemd service

Write the unit file

Create a system-level unit, for example /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. The following is a template: replace the user, paths, input, and output configuration with values you have tested. It assumes /etc/youtube-ffmpeg.env is a protected environment file and that your command references the key through the appropriate variable or configuration mechanism for your FFmpeg setup.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-ffmpeg.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [global_options] [input_options] -i /path/to/input [output_options] "$YOUTUBE_STREAM_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

This is a starting point, not a universal drop-in configuration. Replace the bracketed option groups with real FFmpeg arguments and verify how your chosen method passes the destination and key. Check the installed systemd.service(5) manual for directive behavior supported by your systemd version. A dated FFmpeg-user example uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5; it illustrates one setup, not a guarantee for every host.

Choose the restart policy deliberately

Restart=on-failure is appropriate when you want systemd to relaunch FFmpeg after a failure, while allowing an intentional clean exit to remain stopped. Choose Restart=always if you want it restarted even after a clean exit. Confirm the exact semantics against the local systemd.service(5) manual. A nonzero RestartSec delay avoids immediate repeated retries if the same failure keeps happening.

Decide whether to wait for network configuration

The example requests network-online.target and orders the service after it. network.target is not a signal that usable internet access exists; network-online.target is a wait point whose behavior depends on the host’s network manager and its wait-online provider. Confirm that the appropriate provider is enabled. Waiting can increase boot time, and even a successful wait does not prove DNS, YouTube, or the source media is reachable.

Load, enable, and start the service

  1. After saving the unit, tell systemd to reload unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.

  5. Read its recent logs with sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service. Use sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -f to follow new log entries while diagnosing startup.

Successful startup means the service is running; it does not by itself establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Check the FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room.

Verify reboot and recovery separately

Test boot startup

Reboot during a controlled window, then check sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service and the unit journal. Confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the stream is receiving data. If it fails, inspect whether FFmpeg started too early, whether the input path is available at boot, and whether the service account can read the input and credential file.

Test what happens when FFmpeg exits

Separately simulate a process exit during a safe test. Confirm that systemd starts a new process after the configured delay, and inspect the journal for the exit reason and subsequent attempt. A restart directive acts when the managed process exits; it does not prove that every streaming fault will trigger a restart.

Test a network failure as a different case

Network loss and process exit are not equivalent. FFmpeg may remain alive while disconnected or stalled, in which case a basic restart policy may not act. Do not assume HTTP-specific FFmpeg reconnection switches recover RTMP output. The available FFmpeg protocol documentation does not establish a universal RTMP recovery guarantee. Verify your installed FFmpeg build and test the particular network failure you need to handle.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Service does not start after reboot The unit was not enabled, the unit file was edited without a reload, or startup failed. Run sudo systemctl is-enabled youtube-ffmpeg.service, then inspect sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service and sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service. Reload definitions after edits and enable the unit.
FFmpeg cannot find its executable or input The path differs on the server, or the service user cannot access the media file. Use the verified absolute FFmpeg path in ExecStart; confirm file paths and permissions as the configured service user.
Stream fails at boot but works when started later Network configuration, DNS, the source, or credentials may not be ready when the process starts. Check the journal and host network manager. If network configuration is the issue, ensure the matching wait-online provider is active for network-online.target; remember that this target cannot guarantee YouTube reachability.
FFmpeg starts but YouTube receives no stream The destination URL or key may be wrong, the input may fail, or FFmpeg options may be attached to the wrong input or output. Recheck the current YouTube Live Control Room URL and key, read FFmpeg’s logged error, and verify option order using the command-line documentation.
Systemd does not restart a disconnected stream FFmpeg may still be running, so the configured process-exit restart policy has not been triggered. Inspect whether the process exited or is still alive, review logs, and test recovery for the actual FFmpeg build and failure mode. Do not treat HTTP reconnect flags as an RTMP fix.
Repeated rapid restarts A persistent command, input, permission, or connection error causes each new process to fail. Read the journal for the first failure, correct its cause, and use a deliberate restart delay rather than an immediate retry loop.
