When Wirecast overloads during a continuous YouTube stream, first reduce the work it has to render and encode: lower both the document canvas and the destination resolution, then consider a lower frame rate and disable Live GPU Accelerated Icons. Telestream cautions that sustained system CPU above 60% increases the likelihood of dropped frames; it is a warning line, not a guarantee of safety. Check YouTube’s stream health and your upload capacity separately so a network problem is not mistaken for an encoder problem.
Confirm that CPU overload is the problem
Watch Wirecast’s system CPU display during the actual production, with the normal shots, sources, graphics, effects, and any local recording enabled. Note whether CPU remains high and whether Wirecast reports dropped frames or the stream stutters. The workload matters: encoding is only one possible source of load; rendering, compositing, capture, and recording can contribute too.
Telestream’s Wirecast technical specifications say maintained system CPU usage above 60% increases the likelihood of dropped frames. Treat 60% as a caution line that leaves room for workload spikes—not a threshold that guarantees a reliable stream below it. Telestream’s FAQ uses inconsistent wording in separate passages (below 70% and below 60%), so the more conservative current technical guidance is the useful target.
YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU when local encoded audio or video looks poor. If the encoded output looks and sounds healthy but viewers still experience problems, investigate the outbound connection as a separate issue. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reduce the canvas and destination resolution
Wirecast’s document canvas and the resolution sent to a destination are separate settings. Lowering only the stream output may leave Wirecast rendering a larger canvas and a complex production at its original size.
- In Wirecast, open Output > Canvas Setting and reduce the document canvas. Telestream’s FAQ gives 1280×720 as an example. The exact menu path can vary by release.
- Inspect the YouTube output destination and select a lower-resolution encoding preset that matches the canvas and the quality your audience needs.
- Run the same scene and sources again, then compare sustained CPU use, dropped frames, and the image quality at the destination.
Use a lower resolution only if the resulting text, game details, and motion remain readable to viewers. A change in output resolution is not evidence by itself that the overall production load has fallen enough.
Lower frame rate if the content allows it
Telestream notes that 60 fps increases CPU usage and advises lowering canvas frame rate and/or streaming resolution to reduce load. For a mostly static continuous scene, test 30 fps if it meets the viewing need. This is a workload-based option, not a universal Wirecast preset.

Check fast movement, scrolling text, transitions, and gameplay carefully. Keep 60 fps only when its smoother motion is important and the host sustains it with headroom under the full production workload.
Try the Wirecast preference Telestream identifies
Telestream’s FAQ suggests turning off Live GPU Accelerated Icons under Preferences > Shot Display. Try this as a low-impact adjustment, then observe CPU and stream behavior again. Its effect depends on the production and Wirecast version; do not assume it will resolve every overload.
Test hardware encoding against the complete production
If the installed Wirecast release offers a compatible hardware encoder, compare it with software encoding using the whole production—not a simple test scene. Hardware support depends on the machine and software. Telestream lists Intel Quick Sync for CPUs with a Quick Sync core, NVIDIA NVENC for supported NVIDIA GPUs, and Apple hardware-accelerated H.264 support in its specifications. YouTube also describes hardware encoders as an option for higher-production setups.

During an extended comparison, check host CPU and GPU load, output quality, bitrate behavior, encoder errors, dropped frames, and YouTube stream health. A hardware option is not automatically faster or more reliable on an unknown system. The right choice is the configuration that sustains the real workload with acceptable picture quality and margin.
Match YouTube output settings to the chosen quality
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Use the bitrate guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not carry a bitrate over from a different output format.
Recommended Free Tools
| H.264 output example | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for the stated H.264 formats, not universal targets for every codec or frame rate. Reducing bitrate alone does not necessarily reduce CPU use: workload also depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder implementation, and production composition.

Test with representative motion and sound before relying on the stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Separate upload problems from encoder overload
A healthy local encode can still be disrupted by an unstable or undersized connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Compare the stream’s total outbound bitrate with measured upload capacity, allowing for other devices and traffic using the same connection. If Wirecast shows encoder errors or high CPU, address the production workload; if local encoding is healthy but YouTube reports connection trouble, investigate the network instead. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Also make sure the computer will not sleep. Telestream’s Wirecast 16 user guide says Wirecast does not prevent the computer from entering sleep mode. That guide applies to a prior release, so check the sleep setting in the operating system and software you actually use. No particular CPU percentage or configuration guarantees a failure-free 24/7 stream.
Troubleshoot common failure patterns
- CPU stays high after lowering the stream preset: Check the document canvas separately, then reduce frame rate if acceptable. Consider whether effects, sources, or local recording are adding work.
- CPU is below the caution line but frames still drop: Check Wirecast encoder errors, YouTube stream health, and outbound bandwidth. CPU is not the only possible cause.
- Viewers report buffering while the local encode looks good: Check the connection and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom; do not treat this symptom alone as proof of CPU overload.
- Hardware encoding is available but results are worse or unstable: Compare compatibility, quality, CPU and GPU load, bitrate behavior, and reliability using the same full production. Return to the configuration that performs reliably if the hardware path does not help.
- The stream stops after a period of unattended operation: Check sleep and power settings, then review Wirecast diagnostics and YouTube stream health. The available guidance does not establish one universal cause or a guaranteed 24/7 preset.
If the canvas, output resolution, frame rate, and identified preference still do not provide sustained headroom, collect Wirecast diagnostics and document the computer, operating system, Wirecast version, sources, effects, output settings, and recording workload before considering a hardware change. The symptom alone does not establish that a new computer, GPU, encoder, network device, or cooling product is needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
