Use /fill to change every block in a three-dimensional region between two corner coordinates. Choose the command syntax for your edition first: the examples below are for Bedrock unless marked otherwise, and Java Edition’s syntax differs. Start with a small area and check both corners before running a command that may remove or replace blocks.
Before you start: check your Minecraft edition
Bedrock and Java do not always use the same /fill syntax. The Bedrock command reference lists cheats as required and gives the permission level as Game Directors. In other editions, whether you can run commands depends on the world settings or server permissions. If the command is rejected, confirm your edition and version before changing its syntax.
Java Edition 1.21.5 documents a flexible set of fill options, including strict. That release describes strict placement as avoiding block and shape updates. Check the command help for your current Java version rather than pasting a Bedrock example into Java unchanged. See the Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes.
How to fill an area with blocks in Bedrock
- Choose two opposite corners. Each position is a set of coordinates in
x y zorder. The two positions define the region to change. - Choose a block name. For a first test, use a familiar block such as
stoneorglass. - Enter the basic command. The Bedrock form is
/fill <from> <to> <block>. For example,/fill ~-5 ~ ~-5 ~5 ~3 ~5 stonefills a nearby region around the player with stone. The tildes make the coordinates relative to the command’s position. - Run the command and inspect the region. If the result is not where expected, recheck the coordinate order and the two corners before trying again.
Microsoft’s Bedrock command examples include the relative-coordinate fill shown above. The command reference describes positions as coordinate vectors; Minecraft Education’s command guide also illustrates the two-position-and-block form.

Choose a fill mode for the result you want
In Bedrock, a mode changes how the command treats the region. Think through whether you want to preserve the interior, affect only air, or remove existing blocks before executing it.

Make a hollow box
To create a hollow glass box in Bedrock, use the documented example /fill ~-3 ~ ~-3 ~3 ~4 ~3 glass 0 hollow. The two relative-coordinate triples set opposite corners; glass is the block, and hollow leaves a shell rather than filling the interior. Check the corners in the world before running it, especially near builds you want to keep.
Replace one block with another
Bedrock’s replace mode can filter by the block to be replaced. For example, /fill 0 64 0 10 64 10 grass_block 0 replace dirt replaces dirt with grass in the bounded region. The coordinate triples describe the two corners, grass_block is the replacement, and dirt is the filter.

A filter can also target a block you want to remove by replacing it with air. For example, /fill ~-10 ~-10 ~-10 ~10 ~10 ~10 air 0 replace water clears water from the selected region. Because replacing with air removes the targeted blocks, verify both coordinates and the filter before running it.

If the command fails or changes the wrong area
- Syntax error: Confirm whether you are on Bedrock or Java, then check the command form for that version.
- Invalid block: Check the block name and use the spelling expected by your edition.
- Unexpected location or size: Check that coordinates are in
x y zorder and that relative coordinates are being used as intended. - Permission error: Check whether cheats are enabled and whether your world or server grants command access.
- Execution-limit error: Reduce the region or split it into smaller sections. The official references cited here do not establish one universal current size limit across editions.
