Minecraft’s recipe book is an in-game recipe browser and crafting assistant. Open it from your inventory or a crafting station, browse a category or search for an item, select the result, and follow the ingredient pattern shown in the grid. Ingredients you do not have appear in red. If the recipe uses the full 3×3 grid, move to a crafting table; the personal inventory grid is smaller.

The exact button depends on your keyboard, controller, or touchscreen, so use the control displayed in your game’s settings if the recipe-book icon is not obvious. The official guide describes the feature this way: “The recipe book is organized into tabs to help you find different types of recipes, but you can also search for specific items.”

What the recipe book does

The recipe book turns Minecraft’s crafting system into a searchable list. Instead of memorizing every recipe, you can open the book, locate the item you want, and inspect the required materials and arrangement. Selecting a recipe can place its ingredients into the crafting grid when you have the necessary supplies.

  • Tabs group recipes by category so you can browse related items.
  • Search narrows the list by item name. In Bedrock Edition 1.20.30, search matches the beginning of words and can return recipes that are not yet unlocked.
  • Ingredient indicators show which required supplies you have and highlight missing supplies in red.
  • Patterns show the exact arrangement for recipes that use a particular shape.
  • Station limits tell you when the inventory grid is too small and a crafting table is required.

The book does not replace the crafting grid. It identifies a recipe and can help fill the grid, but you still need the correct items, the correct station, and any unlock conditions imposed by the world.

Where to open it in Java and Bedrock

Open the inventory or an available crafting interface, then activate the recipe-book button shown beside the grid. The locations are similar, but Java Edition exposes the book in more furnace-type interfaces than Bedrock does according to the official crafting guide.

Edition or interface Where the recipe book is available What to remember
Java Edition inventory Personal inventory crafting screen The personal crafting grid is limited in size, so some recipes still require a crafting table.
Java Edition crafting table Crafting-table interface Use this for recipes that require the full 3×3 grid.
Java Edition furnace Furnace interface The recipe book is available in the furnace screen.
Java Edition smoker Smoker interface The recipe book is available in the smoker screen.
Bedrock Edition inventory Personal inventory crafting screen Search and category behavior can differ by version; Bedrock 1.20.30 has specific search and unlock behavior described below.
Bedrock Edition crafting table Crafting-table interface Use the table when the recipe needs a 3×3 arrangement.

Controls are not universal. Keyboard and mouse, gamepad, and touchscreen layouts use different buttons, and custom keybinds can move the command. Minecraft’s controls reference covers basic controls for both editions unless a difference is stated. If you cannot identify the icon, open the in-game controls or keybinds menu and look for the recipe-book action rather than assuming a platform-specific button.

How to find a recipe

  1. Open the appropriate screen. Open your inventory, a crafting table, or—on Java Edition—a furnace or smoker. The recipe-book icon is part of that interface.
  2. Open the book. Activate the icon using the control shown for your device. If it does not respond, confirm that you are in an interface that supports the book and check your keybind or controller mapping.
  3. Choose a category tab. Tabs let you scan groups of related recipes. This is useful when you know the kind of item you want but not its exact name.
  4. Search by item name. Select the search field and type the beginning of the item name. On Bedrock 1.20.30, the search matches the beginning of words and may show recipes that are still locked, which makes it useful for discovering what to unlock next.
  5. Select the result. Click, tap, or select the item entry. The interface displays the required supplies and the arrangement the recipe uses.
  6. Check the ingredient colors. Any required supply you do not currently have is highlighted in red. Treat those entries as a gathering list before attempting to craft.
  7. Craft at the displayed station. If the recipe fits the current grid and you have the supplies, use the craft control. If the grid is too small, close the interface, place or locate a crafting table, and open the recipe there.

Searching is often faster than browsing when you already know the target. Browsing is more useful for discovering related items, checking what a newly obtained material can make, or learning the categories used by your edition.

How to read a selected recipe

Ingredient list and red shortages

When you select an entry, the book shows each required item in the crafting grid. A red highlight means the corresponding supply is missing from your inventory or storage access for that crafting attempt. Gather the exact item shown, not merely a visually similar block or a different material from the same broad category.

Use the red entries as a practical checklist: note the item, collect enough of it, then reopen or reselect the recipe. The book is showing a requirement, not suggesting an interchangeable substitute.

Shaped recipes

A shaped recipe requires a specific pattern. The position of each ingredient matters, including which slots are left empty. Reproduce the silhouette displayed by the book in the same orientation and arrangement. Moving an ingredient to another slot can make the recipe invalid even when the total item count is correct.

Shapeless recipes

A shapeless recipe requires the listed ingredients but not a particular arrangement. You can place those ingredients in any arrangement accepted by the recipe. The book still identifies the exact items and quantities; “shapeless” does not mean that substitute materials are allowed.

Other recipe types

Microsoft Learn documents several recipe types used by Minecraft content, including furnace, potion-brewing, smithing-transform, shaped, and shapeless recipes. The interface you open determines which station performs the operation. A crafting-table recipe belongs in the crafting grid, while a furnace, brewing, or smithing definition is handled by its corresponding station rather than by forcing it into an ordinary crafting grid.

Why a crafting table is sometimes required

The inventory screen provides only the smaller personal crafting grid. A crafting table provides the general 3×3 grid used by recipes that need more slots or a larger pattern. If selecting a recipe does not produce a craft in your inventory, compare the recipe’s displayed arrangement with the grid you have open.

  1. Read the selected recipe and count the grid dimensions it uses.
  2. If the arrangement needs the full 3×3 area, close the inventory.
  3. Open a placed crafting table.
  4. Open the recipe book again in that interface.
  5. Select the recipe and verify that the missing-item highlights have cleared before crafting.

The book does not make a larger grid appear in the inventory. Opening the correct station is the fix when the recipe itself is valid but the current interface cannot hold its pattern.

Unlocks, visibility, and limited crafting

Why a recipe may not appear

Recipe visibility can depend on unlock conditions. Microsoft Learn’s recipe documentation describes Bedrock definitions that unlock when a player obtains an item or when a context is met—for example, entering water or possessing many items. Consequently, a recipe can be valid in the game but absent from the currently unlocked list.

Search behavior can make this seem inconsistent. In Bedrock 1.20.30, searching can return recipes that have not yet been unlocked, so a search result is not always proof that you can craft the item immediately. Select it and check whether the interface identifies an unmet unlock or missing supply.

The Bedrock limited-crafting gamerule

Bedrock 1.20.30 introduced an optional limited-crafting gamerule. In a world using that rule, you cannot craft recipes that have not been unlocked. Seeing a recipe in search therefore does not bypass the world’s progression settings: you must satisfy its unlock condition first.

This setting changes the diagnosis for a failed craft. In an ordinary world, an absent result may be a search term, station, or ingredient problem. In a limited-crafting world, the recipe can also be blocked because it is not unlocked yet. Check the world’s rules and progression before repeatedly gathering materials for a craft the game will not permit.

Troubleshoot a missing or unusable recipe

The book button is missing

  • Confirm that you opened an interface that supports the recipe book: inventory, crafting table, or, in Java Edition, furnace or smoker.
  • Check the in-game keybinds or controller mapping. A custom control scheme may have changed the button.
  • On touchscreen, look for the recipe-book icon within the active interface rather than using a keyboard instruction.
  • Make sure you are not confusing a station’s own processing controls with the crafting-book control.

The item does not appear while browsing

  • Use the search field and type the beginning of the item name.
  • Check another category tab; the item may be grouped differently from what you expect.
  • On Bedrock, search directly even when you suspect the recipe is locked, because version 1.20.30 can return locked results.
  • Consider whether an unlock condition or limited-crafting rule is controlling visibility or use.

The recipe appears but will not craft

  • Read every red ingredient slot and obtain the exact missing items.
  • Verify that you are using the station shown by the recipe. A personal inventory grid cannot perform a recipe requiring the 3×3 table.
  • For a shaped recipe, copy the displayed pattern exactly, including empty spaces.
  • Do not replace an ingredient with a similar-looking material. Standard recipes do not provide ingredient substitutions.
  • If you are playing Bedrock with limited crafting enabled, unlock the recipe before attempting to craft it.

The result changes when you rearrange materials

You are probably working with a shaped recipe. Return to the book and compare each occupied slot with the displayed pattern. A shapeless recipe allows rearrangement, but a shaped recipe does not. Treat the grid image as an arrangement diagram, not merely an ingredient inventory.

Controls on keyboard, controller, and touchscreen

The action is the same across devices—open the interface, activate the recipe book, choose a tab or search, select a result, and craft—but the physical input is different. Minecraft’s official controls reference recommends using the controls appropriate to your platform, and the game’s settings are authoritative when defaults have been changed.

Device How to identify the action Common source of confusion
Keyboard and mouse Use the key shown for the recipe-book action in the current keybinds. A custom keybind or a different interface can make the icon seem unavailable.
Gamepad Use the button prompt displayed beside the recipe-book icon and the current controller mapping. Button layouts differ between controller profiles and editions.
Touchscreen Tap the recipe-book icon in the open inventory or station interface. The icon may be inside the interface layout rather than a persistent screen control.

If an instruction from another player names a key or button that does not match your screen, follow the prompt in your own game. Edition, platform, accessibility configuration, and custom controls can all affect the input.

A practical workflow for everyday crafting

When you know the item name

  1. Open the nearest supported interface.
  2. Open the recipe book and focus the search field.
  3. Type the beginning of the item name.
  4. Select the matching result rather than relying on memory.
  5. Use the red highlights to make a precise gathering list.
  6. Reopen the result at the correct station and reproduce the displayed pattern.

When you only know the material

  1. Open the book and browse the category associated with the kind of item you want.
  2. Inspect related entries to learn which recipes use the material.
  3. Select a candidate and check both the ingredient list and station.
  4. If an entry is unavailable, search its name directly and check whether it is locked or merely outside the current tab.

When teaching a new player

Explain the book as three separate functions: tabs discover recipes, search locates a specific item, and the selected entry supplies the pattern. Then demonstrate the red ingredient highlights and the difference between the inventory grid and a crafting table. This prevents the common assumption that knowing the ingredients alone is enough.

Important limits to remember

  • The recipe book is a browser and grid assistant, not a source of substitute ingredients.
  • Red entries identify supplies that are currently missing; they do not indicate a different recipe.
  • Shaped recipes depend on exact placement, while shapeless recipes depend on the listed ingredients without a fixed pattern.
  • The personal inventory grid cannot perform every recipe; use a crafting table for a full 3×3 arrangement.
  • Java and Bedrock do not expose the book in exactly the same stations, and controls vary by device.
  • Bedrock search and unlock behavior is version-sensitive; the beginning-of-word and locked-result behavior described here applies to version 1.20.30.
  • Bedrock’s optional limited-crafting rule can prevent an otherwise valid recipe until its unlock condition is met.

Once you distinguish search, ingredients, pattern, station, and unlock status, nearly every recipe-book problem has a clear next step: find the entry, read the red shortages, copy the exact arrangement, move to the required station, and satisfy any unlock rule.
