Yes—the ASUS ROG Ally can be used for PS5 Remote Play. Install Sony’s official PS Remote Play app for Windows, prepare the PS5, sign in with the same PlayStation account on both devices, and connect a supported controller. The ROG Ally is not running the PS5 game locally: the PS5 still does the processing while the Ally receives the video and audio stream and sends your inputs back to the console.

That distinction matters. For this setup, the Ally’s graphics performance is less important than the PS5’s availability, controller compatibility, network latency, Wi-Fi quality, and upload and download speeds.

What you need

  • An ASUS ROG Ally or compatible ROG Ally-series Windows handheld. The Ally runs Windows and supports Sony’s PC Remote Play requirements. [c001] [c002]
  • A PS5 with current system software.
  • The official PS Remote Play app for Windows.
  • The same PlayStation account signed in on the PS5 and the Ally.
  • A supported controller. A DualSense connected by USB is the simplest option for initial setup.
  • A reliable internet connection. Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum and recommends 15 Mbps or more in both directions for the best experience. [c001] [c004]

If you are buying a handheld specifically for this purpose, the ASUS ROG Ally is relevant because it provides the Windows environment needed by Sony’s app. However, the hardware alone cannot guarantee a smooth Remote Play session; the network remains the main variable.

1. Enable Remote Play on the PS5

First configure the console. You only need to do this once unless you later disable the settings.

  1. On the PS5, open Settings.
  2. Choose System > Remote Play.
  3. Turn on Enable Remote Play.
  4. If you want to wake the PS5 remotely from Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  5. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
  6. Enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

Update the PS5 to the latest system software available for it, and make sure you know which PlayStation account is signed in. You will need to use that same account in the Windows app on the Ally. [c001] [c004]

2. Install PS Remote Play on the ROG Ally

The ROG Ally is a Windows handheld, so use Sony’s official Windows installer rather than an unofficial wrapper or third-party streaming client.

  1. Open a browser on the Ally.
  2. Download the official PS Remote Play app for Windows from PlayStation Support.
  3. Run the downloaded installer.
  4. Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
  5. Launch PS Remote Play when installation finishes.

Sony’s published requirements include Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, at least 100 MB of available storage, 2 GB of RAM, a 1024 × 768-or-higher display, a sound card, and a USB port. The Windows-based ROG Ally meets the relevant platform requirements. [c001] [c002]

3. Connect a controller

Sony lists the DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Edge wireless controller, and DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller as supported options. For the first setup, connect the controller to the Ally with a USB-C data cable. A wired connection removes Bluetooth pairing and battery issues from the troubleshooting process. [c001]

A DualSense may also be paired with Windows over Bluetooth where supported, but USB is the least ambiguous starting point. Some controller features can be restricted during Remote Play, and what is available may depend on the controller and connection method. [c001] [c004]

Can you use the Ally’s built-in controls?

Possibly, but do not assume that the Remote Play app will interpret every built-in Ally control exactly like a DualSense. If the app does not respond correctly, connect a supported PlayStation controller instead.

4. Sign in and connect to the PS5

  1. Open PS Remote Play on the Ally.
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
  4. Connect the controller, preferably by USB for the first attempt.
  5. Select PS5 in the Remote Play app.
  6. Allow the app to search for the console.
  7. When the connection succeeds, the PS5 display should appear on the Ally.

For the first test, keep the Ally and PS5 on the same home network. Once that works, test Remote Play from another network if remote access away from home is your goal. Sony recommends confirming a nearby connection before depending on an external connection. [c001]

5. Manually pair the Ally if the PS5 is not found

Automatic discovery can fail even when the console and app are configured correctly. If both devices are on the same network, use the PS5’s pairing code:

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device.
  2. Leave the pairing-number screen open and note the number shown.
  3. Open PS Remote Play on the Ally.
  4. Choose the manual pairing option if prompted, then enter the number displayed by the PS5.

This procedure is intended for devices on the same network. It does not replace the need to enable Remote Play or use the same PlayStation account. [c001]

Network settings that make the biggest difference

Sony’s minimum guidance is 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download. For best performance, Sony recommends 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download. Those figures are throughput guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play: latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi congestion, NAT behavior, and the distance between the Ally and PS5 can still cause problems. • Use a relatively clear 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when the Ally has a strong signal. It is often preferable to a congested 2.4 GHz network, but a weak 5 GHz signal can be worse than a strong 2.4 GHz connection.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and game updates on other devices.
  • Move closer to the wireless access point if the signal is weak.
  • For persistent wireless instability, test the Ally with a compatible USB-C Ethernet adapter or dock.
  • Connecting the PS5 by Ethernet while the Ally uses strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi can remove one wireless hop, although the result depends on the layout and quality of the home network.

A 5 GHz-capable Wi-Fi router or mesh system can be a reasonable networking upgrade if your existing wireless coverage is poor, but no particular router can guarantee a fixed frame rate, resolution, or latency for Remote Play.

Troubleshooting PS5 Remote Play on the ROG Ally

The PS5 is not discovered

  1. Confirm that the PS5 and Ally are online.
  2. Confirm that Enable Remote Play is turned on.
  3. Check that both devices are using the same PlayStation account.
  4. Restart the Remote Play app and try again.
  5. Test both devices on the same home network.
  6. Use Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device on the PS5 and enter the displayed number manually.

The connection works but the picture stutters or controls feel delayed

  • Check actual upload and download performance rather than relying only on your internet plan’s advertised maximum.
  • Move the Ally closer to the access point.
  • Switch to a less congested 5 GHz network if available.
  • Pause other bandwidth-heavy activity.
  • Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet if possible.
  • Test the Ally over Ethernet using a compatible USB-C adapter or dock.

Do not judge the Ally’s local gaming performance by a laggy Remote Play session. The stream is being affected primarily by the network path between the console, internet connection, router, and handheld.

The controller is not responding correctly

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the controller with a USB data cable.
  2. Confirm that Windows detects the controller before launching or reconnecting to Remote Play.
  3. Use a supported DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 if the Ally’s built-in controls are not recognized correctly.
  4. Open Armoury Crate SE and check whether the Ally is in the appropriate control mode, such as Gamepad Mode.
  5. If Bluetooth was being used, test a wired connection to separate pairing problems from Remote Play problems.

The app is blocked or will not connect

Check whether Windows Defender, third-party antivirus software, or a firewall is blocking PS Remote Play. Also check the router’s NAT behavior. Sony identifies UDP port 8572 as used by Remote Play and warns that NAT Type 3 can prevent Remote Play from working. Router configuration varies, so contact your ISP or router manufacturer if you do not manage advanced network settings; do not change port or NAT settings blindly. [c004]

Armoury Crate SE is missing or the controls changed behavior

Armoury Crate SE is ASUS’s management layer for the Ally. It provides the game library, control modes, profiles, settings, and system-management functions; it is not a replacement for Sony’s Remote Play application. You can add PS Remote Play to its library for convenient launching.

If Armoury Crate has been removed, ASUS says Windows may recognize the Ally’s controls only as a gamepad and the desktop-mode behavior that lets the controls act like a mouse may be lost. ASUS directs users to reinstall Armoury Crate SE from the Ally’s product-support page. [c003] [c005]

What PS5 Remote Play cannot do

Remote Play gives the Ally remote access to the PS5; it does not turn the handheld into a PS5 or let it play PS5 games without the console. The PS5 must remain powered on or available through Rest Mode, connected to the internet, and configured correctly.

There are also feature restrictions. Sony says Remote Play does not support games that require PS VR, PS VR2, or PlayStation Camera. Sony also lists restrictions involving Share Play, PlayStation Plus game streaming, Blu-ray and DVD playback, music, video services, and certain broadcasting scenarios. Some game images may be unavailable depending on the title. [c004]

For that reason, Remote Play is best understood as a way to use your PS5 from another screen—not as a universal substitute for playing directly on the television or as a local PS5 gaming solution.

Best setup for a first session

  1. Update the PS5 and ROG Ally.
  2. Enable Remote Play and Rest Mode network wake on the PS5.
  3. Install Sony’s official Windows Remote Play app.
  4. Connect a DualSense by USB.
  5. Place the Ally and PS5 on the same home network.
  6. Sign in with the same PlayStation account.
  7. Connect automatically, then test manual pairing if discovery fails.
  8. After the local test succeeds, try a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection or wired Ethernet.

Accessory note: A DualSense and a USB-C data cable are the most straightforward optional additions if you want predictable controller behavior. A USB-C Ethernet adapter or dock is useful for diagnosing unstable Wi-Fi. Networking equipment can help when coverage or congestion is the problem, but it cannot compensate for every source of latency or packet loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ROG Ally run PS5 games natively with Remote Play?

No. The PS5 continues to run the game. The ROG Ally receives the streamed video and audio and sends controller input back to the console.

Can the ROG Ally run the official PS Remote Play app?

Yes. Sony’s Remote Play app supports Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11, and the ROG Ally runs Windows. Install the official Windows app rather than using an unofficial client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What internet speed does PS5 Remote Play need?

Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps or more in both directions for the best experience. Latency, packet loss, congestion, and Wi-Fi quality also matter.

Can I use the ROG Ally’s built-in controls instead of a DualSense?

The Ally’s built-in controls may work, but compatibility can vary by Windows application. If they are not recognized correctly, use a supported DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller, preferably connected by USB for the first setup.

Do all PS5 games and features work through Remote Play?

No. Games requiring PS VR, PS VR2, or PlayStation Camera are not compatible, and Sony lists additional restrictions involving Share Play, game streaming, Blu-ray/DVD playback, media services, and some broadcasting features.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The ROG Ally works well as a Windows host for PS5 Remote Play when the PS5 is configured correctly and the network is reliable. Install Sony’s official app, use the same PlayStation account, start with a wired supported controller, and treat network quality—not the Ally’s local graphics power—as the key performance factor.
