What Trilogy Save Editor can do
Trilogy Save Editor is a community utility for saves from the original Mass Effect trilogy and Legendary Edition. Its documented features include editing thousands of plot flags, using BioWare’s plot database, importing and exporting head morphs, managing inventory in ME1 Legendary Edition, and adding multiple bonus powers. Support varies by game and feature; the project’s README lists exceptions for original-trilogy Mass Effect 1. See the project README for its feature list and version history.

The Nexus Mods listing displays version 2.2.1, last updated December 27, 2021. Its changelog says that release fixed ME1 Legendary Edition bonus talent abilities that did not appear in the HUD. That is the version information shown on the reviewed listing, not confirmation that no later release exists; check the Nexus Mods page for current files and setup details. The listing also identifies the Visual C++ Redistributable as a dependency.
How to open and edit a save
- Close the game. Editing while the game is using the save risks working with a file that is in use.
- Make a separate backup. Copy the save you intend to change and leave the original untouched so you have a way back if the edited file causes problems.
- Open the save in Trilogy Save Editor. Launch the editor and click the red Open button at the upper left, then choose the relevant save file. The maintainer’s FAQ describes this as the basic starting point: “There is a red
Openbutton on the top left of the window, you can’t miss it.” See the maintainer FAQ. - Find the relevant game and category. Change only the field you intend to change, then save the file. A narrow edit is easier to check than several unrelated changes made at once.
- Verify the result in-game. Load the edited save in the corresponding game and check the change before continuing your playthrough. The available documentation does not guarantee that every possible edit produces a valid save.
How to change Shepard’s appearance
Changing the displayed Identity Code does not change Shepard’s actual appearance. The maintainer’s FAQ explains that this text is used in menus and during save imports. To change appearance, create a new character, export that character’s Head Morph, then import the morph into the target save, following the FAQ’s Head Morph instructions.

A morph can fail if it refers to a texture that is not present in the game. The FAQ says this can leave the in-game camera below the map. If that happens after importing a morph, inspect the morph and its texture references rather than trying arbitrary texture names.
Limitations and common problems
The editor cannot find a database file
If the editor reports that it cannot parse a database because a path cannot be found, the FAQ identifies a missing or incorrectly installed databases folder as the cause. The folder needs to be in the same directory as the editor executable.

ME1 Paragon or Renegade points do not raise Charm or Intimidate
In Mass Effect 1, adding Paragon or Renegade points does not automatically increase Charm or Intimidate. The FAQ says to adjust those ranks and their maximum ranks separately under Raw > Player > Complex Talents: Charm is talent ID 108 and Intimidate is talent ID 109.
A cross-class power disappears in ME2 or ME3
In Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, the game removes a power from another class unless the game is modded. The FAQ notes an exception for a power with the bonus-power property. Adding a cross-class power in the editor alone therefore is not a reliable way to keep it.

ME3 resets powers after a talent-point edit
The FAQ warns that if Shepard has more talent points than their level permits, Mass Effect 3 resets powers and recalculates the available points. Avoid setting a total beyond what the character’s level allows.
A PS4 save will not open as-is
According to the FAQ, PS4 saves must first be decrypted with third-party tools. Save decryption is outside Trilogy Save Editor’s scope; the editor is not a console-save decryption tool.

When to use the editor—and when not to
Use Trilogy Save Editor when the specific change you want is documented for your game and save, and you can preserve an untouched backup. If the desired field’s behavior is unclear, or you cannot restore the original file, leaving the save unchanged is the safer choice. The available sources do not establish another save editor as an equivalent alternative for this workflow; LegendaryExplorer is a separate PC modding toolkit, not a documented substitute for this save-editing process.
