The simplest way to put a Vimeo video on a WordPress page is to paste its public URL into WordPress’s native Vimeo block and select Embed. Use Vimeo’s copied embed HTML instead when you need fixed dimensions or player options that the block does not expose. Restricted videos work only when Vimeo’s viewing privacy, embed privacy, and the URL you paste all match your site.

Choose the right Vimeo-to-WordPress method
WordPress gives you two practical ways to add a Vimeo player. The native Vimeo block is the safest and quickest choice for most posts and pages. It handles the standard oEmbed process, keeps the workflow inside the block editor, and avoids manually editing an iframe. Copied HTML is useful when you need to control the player’s dimensions or configure options available in Vimeo’s embed dialog.

| Native Vimeo block | Public videos and routine embeds | The Vimeo video URL | Fewer presentation controls than custom embed code |
| Copied Vimeo HTML | Fixed sizing, responsive code, and playback settings | The HTML generated by Vimeo’s Share > Embed panel | Requires an HTML-capable editor and can be affected by theme or plugin CSS |
Do not paste a private Vimeo video into a public WordPress page expecting visitors to see it. Vimeo must authorize the viewer and the embedding site first. A player can appear correctly for the owner while remaining unavailable to ordinary visitors.
How to embed a public Vimeo video with the WordPress block
This is the standard workflow for a public video and does not require you to write code.

- Edit the WordPress post or page. Place the cursor where the player should appear.
- Add a Vimeo block. Select the plus button, search for Vimeo, and insert the Vimeo block.
- Paste the URL. Put the URL in the block’s field and select Embed.
- Save and preview. Check the published or preview page on a desktop-width screen and on a phone before sharing it.
WordPress describes the Vimeo block as the built-in way to embed Vimeo videos into a WordPress website. If WordPress cannot retrieve the video, do not immediately switch to random iframe code. First verify the URL and Vimeo’s access settings, especially if the video is unlisted or restricted.
What the native block does and does not control
The block gives you a straightforward player placement workflow and lets the theme determine much of the surrounding layout. The video remains hosted by Vimeo, so the WordPress media library does not receive a new video file. This avoids uploading a large video to your hosting account, but playback still depends on Vimeo availability, the viewer’s connection, and Vimeo’s privacy rules.

After inserting the block, use the editor’s alignment, width, and spacing controls if your theme provides them. These controls change the block’s position in the page; they do not override a Vimeo account setting that prohibits embedding.
How to use Vimeo’s embed HTML for more control
Choose this route when you need responsive or fixed dimensions, autoplay, mute, loop, or other options exposed by Vimeo’s embed dialog.
- Open the video settings in Vimeo. Select Share, then choose Embed.
- Set the player options. Choose responsive or fixed sizing. Configure autoplay, mute, and loop only when they suit the page and the viewer’s expectations.
- Copy the generated HTML. Copy the complete code Vimeo provides rather than reconstructing an iframe yourself.
- Open an HTML-capable area in WordPress. Use a Custom HTML block in the block editor or the appropriate code view in an editor that permits iframe markup.
- Paste the code and save. Keep the Vimeo-generated attributes intact unless you understand exactly what you are changing.
- Preview at several widths. Test the player on a wide desktop window and a narrow phone viewport, then inspect the space above and below it.
WordPress filters embed-related HTML for security. That filtering is why arbitrary, untrusted code may be removed or altered. Use the native Vimeo block whenever it meets your needs, or paste Vimeo’s code through an editor and account with permission to use HTML. Do not accept iframe snippets from an unknown source.
Responsive versus fixed dimensions
A responsive player changes its width with the containing column and is normally the better choice for pages read on phones, tablets, and desktops. Fixed dimensions can be appropriate for a tightly designed desktop layout, but they may overflow a narrow content area or leave excessive empty space. If a fixed player looks clipped, the cause may be the theme’s content width rather than Vimeo itself.

Vimeo privacy modes and what visitors can do
Vimeo has separate choices for who can watch a video and where it may be embedded. Select both deliberately; changing only one setting can produce a working player for you but an error for your audience.

| Vimeo viewing mode | Who can watch | WordPress behavior | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone who can access the video | Normally discoverable and embeddable when embedding is allowed | Suitable for a standard public post |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the complete link | Can be embedded, but it may fail if the link is shortened | The privacy hash appended to the URL must remain intact |
| Password | People who know the video password | The player requires the password before playback | Posting the page does not remove Vimeo’s password gate |
| Embed only | People viewing through an allowed embed | Can play inside WordPress while the normal Vimeo.com page is not generally available | Useful when the page, rather than Vimeo, is the intended viewing location |
| Private | The owner and permitted team members | Ordinary site visitors cannot use the embed | Changing WordPress code cannot make a private video public |
For an unlisted video, paste the full URL, including its privacy hash. That extra value is part of the access mechanism; removing it can prevent WordPress from retrieving the video through oEmbed.
Control which websites may embed the video
Vimeo’s embed privacy setting controls the domains where the player is allowed to load. The choices are:
- Anywhere: The video may be embedded on any permitted site.
- Nowhere: Embedding is disabled, so a WordPress player will not work.
- Specific domains: Only the domains you enter may display the player.
Vimeo supports up to 50 allowed domains for the specific-domain option. Add the domain used by the published WordPress site, and account for the exact site address your visitors use. If the site is outside the allowed list, Vimeo returns an error instead of the video.
When a site has separate production, staging, and preview domains, each one may need to be allowed for testing. A staging URL that is not on the list can fail even though the production page works.
Configure playback and accessibility options
Autoplay and mute
Vimeo’s embed dialog supports autoplay and mute. Autoplay with sound is commonly blocked by browsers, and unexpected playback can be disruptive, particularly on a page with several videos. If autoplay is necessary, test the result in the browsers your audience uses and consider starting muted. Never assume that an autoplay setting in Vimeo guarantees autoplay in every browser.
Looping
Loop is useful for short demonstrations, background motion, or a clip intended to repeat. It is less suitable for a long-form presentation where viewers expect the video to stop. Enable it in Vimeo’s embed settings rather than adding unsupported parameters to copied code.

Captions and subtitles
Vimeo’s player supports captions and subtitles. Provide accurate text for spoken dialogue, identify meaningful non-speech audio when appropriate, and verify that the caption track is available on the embedded player rather than only on Vimeo’s own page. Captions improve access for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers and help anyone watching without sound.
Do not treat muted autoplay as an accessibility substitute. A muted video still needs a clear label, accessible controls, and captions when speech or essential audio information is present.

Preview and quality-check the finished embed
Previewing only inside the editor can hide problems introduced by the active theme, caching, or a mobile breakpoint. Use this checklist before publishing:
- The player loads for a logged-out visitor, not only for the Vimeo owner.
- The video starts or remains paused according to the setting you chose.
- Controls are visible and usable with a mouse, keyboard, and touch screen.
- The player fits the content column without horizontal scrolling.
- Captions or subtitles can be selected when they are available.
- The page has sensible spacing above and below the player.
- The video is not hidden behind a cookie notice, sticky element, or overlapping theme component.
- The page still behaves correctly at a narrow mobile width.
Troubleshoot “Vimeo video not showing in WordPress”
The block says the video cannot be embedded
- Confirm that the URL belongs to the intended Vimeo video and was copied completely.
- Check that the video is not set to Private.
- Review Vimeo’s embed privacy setting. If it is set to Specific domains, add the WordPress site’s domain or temporarily choose an appropriate broader setting for testing.
- For an unlisted video, replace the shortened URL with the complete URL that includes the privacy hash.
- Save the Vimeo settings, then remove and reinsert the URL in the WordPress block.
The player says the video does not exist or shows a privacy error
This message usually indicates an access mismatch rather than a broken WordPress page. Recheck both layers of Vimeo privacy: the viewing mode and the embed-domain rule. A private video remains unavailable to ordinary visitors, and a specific-domain rule rejects a page served from a domain that is not on the list.
The video works for you but not for visitors
Test in a private browser window while logged out of Vimeo. Owners and team members can have permission that ordinary visitors do not. If the video is password-protected, visitors must enter that password. If it is unlisted, verify that the published page uses the full URL and did not strip the hash.
The iframe has unexpected whitespace or the wrong size
Inspect the page with the theme’s developer tools or temporarily compare the result in a clean preview. Theme and plugin CSS can add margins, constrain the iframe, set a fixed height, or interfere with a responsive wrapper. Check the block’s alignment and spacing settings, then inspect CSS rules affecting iframe, the Vimeo wrapper, or the post-content container.
If the player is cropped, remove conflicting fixed-height rules and use Vimeo’s responsive option. If there is too much blank space, check for an aspect-ratio wrapper or a theme rule that reserves height independently of the iframe.
Autoplay or another playback option does not work
Verify that the option is enabled in Vimeo’s generated embed settings and that the saved page contains the current code. Browser cookie settings, privacy extensions, and other extensions can affect some Vimeo playback behavior. Test with extensions disabled, then test in another browser. Even with correct code, browser autoplay policies can block playback, especially when sound is enabled.
WordPress removes the code
WordPress’s oEmbed and embed handling filters HTML for security. Use the native Vimeo block, or use a Custom HTML block and an account permitted to publish that markup. Do not work around the filter by injecting untrusted scripts. If an administrator-level editor still sees code altered, check whether a security plugin or hosting policy applies an additional HTML filter.
Native block or copied HTML: a practical decision guide
| Need | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One public video in a normal article | Native Vimeo block | Fast setup with minimal code and fewer security issues |
| An unlisted video | Native block with the complete URL | The block can use the URL while preserving the required privacy hash |
| Responsive player with Vimeo’s configured options | Copied embed HTML | Vimeo generates the responsive wrapper and playback attributes |
| Exact desktop width and height | Copied embed HTML | Fixed dimensions are available in the embed dialog |
| Private video for ordinary public visitors | Neither method | Private viewing permissions prevent the audience from watching |
| Strict domain control | Either method plus Specific domains | The access decision is made by Vimeo’s embed privacy setting, not by the WordPress block type |
Security and maintenance considerations
Embedding leaves the video on Vimeo and loads a third-party player on the page. Keep the WordPress editor, theme, and relevant plugins updated, and limit HTML-capable editing access to trusted users. A copied iframe is not a license to paste arbitrary JavaScript into a post.

Review embeds when a video’s privacy status, password, allowed domains, or Vimeo URL changes. An old page can continue to display an error after the video owner changes settings. For unlisted videos, preserve the complete URL whenever you move the embed to another post, staging site, or template.
WordPress’s oEmbed handbook was last updated July 7, 2025, and its security filtering remains relevant when deciding between a native block and manually supplied markup. The native block is the least fragile option when no custom player behavior is required.
Frequently encountered setup scenarios
A public trailer on a video-games article
Copy the public Vimeo URL, add a Vimeo block, select Embed, and preview on mobile. Use captions when dialogue carries information, and leave autoplay off unless the page’s design genuinely depends on it.
A review video shared privately with a team
A Private video is limited to the owner and team members, so an ordinary public WordPress page cannot serve as the viewing channel. Change Vimeo’s viewing permission to a mode appropriate for the intended audience, then configure embed privacy and protect the WordPress page separately if necessary.
An unlisted video used on a hidden campaign page
Use the complete unlisted URL, including its privacy hash, in the Vimeo block or generated embed code. Remember that unlisted means absent from public search, not access-controlled authentication: anyone who obtains the complete link may be able to view it according to the video’s other settings.
A player that should appear only on your own site
Set Vimeo embed privacy to Specific domains and add the site’s domain. Test both the staging and production addresses if both are used. Visitors who load the player from an unapproved domain will receive an error.

Can I embed a private Vimeo video in WordPress?
Not for ordinary public visitors. A Vimeo video set to Private is limited to the owner and permitted team members. Change the Vimeo viewing permission to a mode suitable for your audience, then ensure the embed privacy setting allows the WordPress domain.
Why does an unlisted Vimeo video fail in WordPress?
The URL may be incomplete. Paste the full unlisted URL, including its privacy hash, and verify that Vimeo allows embedding on the WordPress domain.
Should I use a Vimeo block or iframe HTML?
Use the native Vimeo block for most public or unlisted videos. Use Vimeo’s generated HTML when you need responsive or fixed dimensions, autoplay, mute, loop, or other options exposed by the embed dialog.
How many domains can Vimeo allow for specific-domain embedding?
Vimeo supports up to 50 allowed domains for its Specific domains embed setting.
