Yes, you can use Creative Commons music in a YouTube 24/7 stream—but only if the exact license covers your use. Credit is required by some licenses, but attribution does not replace permission, guarantee monetization rights, or stop Content ID from interrupting a live stream. Before going live, confirm permission for continuous live use, monetization if applicable, edits or looping, and the saved archive; then ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
Check the track’s exact license before using it
“Creative Commons” describes several different licenses, not one blanket permission. Find the license attached to the specific recording and read its terms, including the version. A track page that says “free” or “Creative Commons” without identifying the applicable terms is not enough to establish that your planned use is allowed.
What the common license conditions mean
- BY (Attribution): Credit the creator and meet the license’s other conditions. CC BY permits commercial reuse when its terms are followed.
- NC (NonCommercial): The license limits use to noncommercial purposes. Do not assume a stream is noncommercial simply because you do not charge viewers; monetization and other circumstances may matter, and the license wording governs.
- ND (NoDerivatives): The license does not permit sharing adaptations. If you edit, remix, or otherwise change the audio, check whether the intended use would be an adaptation that you are sharing.
- SA (ShareAlike): Adaptations must be shared under the same terms. Check the conditions before editing or remixing.
These conditions can be combined. Attribution alone does not satisfy an NC, ND, or SA condition, and it does not grant rights the license withholds. Creative Commons’ CC BY 4.0 deed permits sharing and adaptation, including commercially, subject to its terms; its CC BY-NC 4.0 deed bars commercial use. The deeds summarize the licenses, so consult the actual terms. Other rights, including privacy, publicity, and moral rights, may also be relevant.
Check every use your 24/7 stream involves
For a continuous stream, verify that the permission covers the live broadcast and the saved archive, the territories where viewers can watch, and any monetization. Check edits, fades, looping, or other changes against the specific license rather than assuming that repeating a track is automatically covered. YouTube advises checking a third-party license for where and how the track may be used; the license needs to fit the use you actually plan.

Prepare attribution that viewers can see
YouTube’s license guidance calls for the work’s title, author, source URL, and license information. For CC BY 4.0, Creative Commons also calls for appropriate credit, a link to the license, and an indication of changes, without implying that the creator endorses your channel. Put the credit somewhere viewers can find it, such as the video or stream description, and keep a copy of the credit information with your records.
Keep a rights record for each track
- Track title and creator or author.
- The original source URL and the exact license name and version.
- A copy or dated record of the license page and the permission terms as they applied when you obtained the track.
- Written permission for any use not clearly covered by the license, including live streaming, monetization, or changes.
- Any written response from the rights holder about Content ID registration and channel allowlisting.
A description credit is not proof of clearance to YouTube’s matching system. YouTube warns that music labeled “free” online may still be flagged, and says Content ID does not use description text or an off-platform purchase as proof that a track is cleared.

Understand live interruptions and archive claims
During the live broadcast
YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder image and warn the creator to stop using the content. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not necessarily prevent this: YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Ask the rights holder whether the recording is registered in Content ID and, where applicable, request that your channel be allowlisted. A license and an allowlist address different issues: permission establishes what the license lets you do, while allowlisting can help prevent a matching system from interrupting the broadcast. Do not treat either as a substitute for the other.

After the stream ends
YouTube says Content ID claims on an archived live stream are made after the stream has ended. Depending on the rights holder’s policy, a claim may block the video, monetize it for the rights holder (sometimes with revenue sharing), or track it. Policies can vary by geography. A Content ID claim usually affects the video; it is not the same as a copyright strike, which follows a valid copyright removal request.
If a claim appears, inspect the claimant and the specific segment in YouTube Studio. If the claim is valid, possible responses include leaving it in place, removing, muting, or replacing the audio, or using eligible revenue sharing. Dispute only if you are confident you have the necessary rights and evidence. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes, and an invalid dispute can lead the claimant to request removal.

A practical pre-stream checklist
- Identify the precise recording and license. Save the source page and confirm the license name and version rather than relying on a search result or a general “free music” label.
- Match the license to the plan. Check commercial or monetized use, edits and looping, the live broadcast, the archive, and the territories where the stream will be available.
- Prepare the credit. Include title, author, source URL, and license information. For CC BY 4.0, include the license link and identify changes, without suggesting endorsement.
- Ask about Content ID. Ask whether the track is registered and whether the rights holder can add your channel to its allowlist. Keep the response with your rights record.
- Verify the archive and response plan. Decide how you will review the saved video and any claim in Studio, and keep enough information to identify and replace or remove a disputed segment if needed.
This checklist lowers avoidable uncertainty; it cannot guarantee that a track will not be claimed or that a stream will never be interrupted. Official guidance describes possible enforcement outcomes, but does not establish a claim or interruption rate for 24/7 Creative Commons streams.
Choose a music source for live use, not just general reuse
YouTube lists its Audio Library, original music, Creator Music, and third-party music services as sourcing options. Whichever source you use, confirm that the terms cover continuous live streaming, monetization where relevant, and the archived version. YouTube’s current Creator Music FAQ says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content, so catalog availability alone should not be treated as permission for a live broadcast. Check the current terms for the specific track and use.

Setting a YouTube video’s license to “Creative Commons Attribution” is a separate matter. YouTube says an uploader can apply that setting only when all content in the video can be licensed under CC BY, such as original content, CC BY content, or public-domain content; the setting cannot be applied when the video has a Content ID claim. Selecting that setting does not prove that a third-party song was licensed for your 24/7 stream.
