In desktop Microsoft Word, you can cite a Wikipedia page by saving it as a Website source, inserting that source after the relevant sentence, and generating a bibliography or Works Cited list from the References tab. The process is documented for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016.
Word records and formats the details you enter; it does not check whether Wikipedia’s article is accurate. For coursework, journalism, or other high-stakes writing, use Wikipedia to understand a subject and inspect its inline references, then cite the authoritative book, paper, government page, or other source that actually supports your sentence.

What “using Wikipedia in Word” actually involves
There are two separate tasks people mean by this phrase. The first is bibliographic: you want Word to create an in-text citation and a reference-list entry for a Wikipedia page. The second is research: you want to read or search Wikipedia while writing. Word’s built-in citation tools handle the first task. They do not evaluate, fact-check, or endorse the second.

That is technically valid when your instructor, editor, or style guide permits a Wikipedia citation. Whether it is the best source for a particular claim is a separate editorial decision. Wikipedia pages are editable and can change after you read them, so record the date you accessed the page and retain the exact page URL.

The instructions below describe the desktop References workflow. Labels can move slightly between Word builds, but the commands are available in the desktop versions Microsoft documents: Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016.
Prepare the Wikipedia information before opening Word
Gather the information first so the source record is complete and reusable.
- Canonical URL: Open the article in a browser and copy the page’s regular, canonical address rather than a search-results URL.
- Article title: Copy the displayed Wikipedia page title exactly, including capitalization, punctuation, and any disambiguation in parentheses.
- Author or organization: If the page presents no individual author, enter an organization such as “Wikipedia contributors” when that fits the style and fields shown in your Word build.
- Access date: Note the day you viewed the page. Wikipedia content can be revised, so this date tells a reader which version you consulted.
- Required style: Confirm whether your assignment uses APA, Chicago, GOST, IEEE, ISO 690, MLA, or another style available in your Word installation. Your selected style controls how Word displays the in-text citation and bibliography entry.
Keep the article open while you enter the source. If you later discover that the page redirected to a different title, update the saved record instead of creating a second, nearly identical source.
Step-by-step: add a Wikipedia citation in desktop Word
1. Choose the citation style
Open the document and select the References tab. In the Citations & Bibliography area, open the Style menu and select the format required for your work. Set the style before inserting citations so Word formats every new citation consistently.
If your instructor changes the required style later, switch the style menu rather than manually rewriting each citation. Word uses the source records already stored in the document and displays them according to the newly selected style.

2. Place the cursor after the supported statement
Click immediately after the sentence or phrase that the Wikipedia page supports. Putting the insertion point at the correct location matters: Word inserts the citation at that point, and readers need to be able to tell which claim it documents.
Do not place one citation at the end of an entire page of unrelated claims. If different sentences rely on different sources, insert the appropriate source after each supported statement.

3. Create a Website source
On References, select Insert Citation > Add New Source. In the Create Source dialog, open Type of Source and choose Website. Microsoft lists Website as an available source type.
Complete the bibliographic fields that your version displays. A practical mapping looks like this:
| Word field or concept | What to enter for a Wikipedia page | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Author | The named author, or “Wikipedia contributors” when no individual author is supplied and that treatment suits your style guide | Determines the author element in the citation and reference entry |
| Name of web page or title | The exact Wikipedia article title | Identifies the page you read |
| Name of website | Wikipedia, if your Word build provides this field | Identifies the host publication |
| Year, month, and day | The publication or revision date only when the page and your required style provide a usable date | Supplies date information where the style calls for it |
| URL | The canonical URL copied from the browser | Lets a reader locate the page |
| Accessed date | The date you viewed the article, if the dialog provides an access-date field | Records the version context for a changeable page |
Word’s field names and available date controls can differ by edition. Enter only information you can verify from the page or your assignment rules; do not invent an author, publication date, or revision date.

4. Save the source and insert the citation
Select OK. Word inserts a citation at the cursor and stores the source in the document’s source list. Microsoft describes the principle this way: “To add a citation to your document, you first add the source that you used.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When another sentence relies on the same article, place the cursor at that sentence, choose Insert Citation, and select the saved source. Reusing the record prevents small differences in spelling, URL, or dates from appearing throughout the document.
5. Add the bibliography or Works Cited list
Move the cursor to the location where your references should appear, usually after the main text. Open References > Bibliography, then choose Bibliography or Works Cited. Word builds the list from the source records used in the document and formats it according to the selected style.
Choose the label that matches your instructions. “Works Cited” is commonly associated with MLA assignments, while “Bibliography” is a broader label, but your instructor or publisher has the final say.
6. Correct a source through Manage Sources
If the title, author, URL, or date is wrong, open References > Manage Sources. Select the Wikipedia source, choose Edit, correct the fields, and save. Editing the stored record is safer than deleting citations and retyping them because every citation that points to that record can use the corrected details.

Check the first citation and the generated reference entry after making a correction. If the page itself has been renamed or redirected, replace the old title and URL with the page you actually consulted and retain the access date.
Should you cite Wikipedia or the source behind it?
The right choice depends on what your sentence claims and what your assignment permits.
| Approach | When it fits | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Wikipedia citation | You are documenting a definition, a page’s wording, a timeline of how Wikipedia presented information on a particular date, or an assignment that explicitly allows Wikipedia | Fast to record; the page URL and access date point readers to the material you read | The page can change, and Word does not assess its reliability |
| Cite the underlying source | An inline reference in Wikipedia leads to a book, scholarly paper, government publication, or other authoritative source that supports your claim | Places responsibility for the fact on the original evidence rather than on a changeable summary | Requires opening, evaluating, and entering an additional source in Word |
Harvard College Writing Program guidance is direct: “If you do start with Wikipedia, you should make sure articles you read contain citations—and then go read the cited articles to check the accuracy of what you read.” Treat Wikipedia as an orientation and discovery tool. Follow the inline citation, read the underlying work, and decide whether it actually supports the wording you plan to use.
When the underlying work supports your sentence, add that book, paper, government page, or other source to Word’s Source Manager and cite it directly. You may keep the Wikipedia page as a separately cited secondary source if you discuss Wikipedia itself or if your style guide specifically requires documenting it. Do not imply that Word has verified either source; Word only formats and stores the information you provide.
Desktop, Mac, web, and mobile differences
| Platform or edition | What you can expect | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Word for Microsoft 365 | Microsoft’s documented desktop citation workflow | Use References, Create Source, Manage Sources, and Bibliography as described above |
| Word 2024 | Covered by the same documented workflow | The exact appearance of dialogs may differ, but the source-and-bibliography sequence applies |
| Word 2021 | Covered by the same documented workflow | Use Website as the source type and store the page details |
| Word 2019 | Covered by the same documented workflow | Reuse saved sources through Insert Citation |
| Word 2016 | Covered by the same documented workflow | Manage Sources remains the place to edit an existing record |
| Word for Mac | Microsoft’s Mac guidance describes the same source, citation, Source Manager, and bibliography concepts | Expect comparable controls, while allowing for Mac-specific menu placement |
| Word for the web or mobile apps | Some table and citation-related features may not be available | Use desktop Word when you need the full Source Manager and bibliography workflow |
If a command is missing in a browser or mobile app, that is a feature-availability issue rather than a problem with the Wikipedia URL. Open the document in a supported desktop edition before creating or repairing the source record.

Optional: the Wikipedia app in Word
Microsoft Marketplace has listed a Wikipedia app for Word. The listing describes a task pane that can find and quote related Wikipedia information, display text and images, search without first inserting the app, and insert the app automatically. This is a convenience for lookup, not a replacement for Word’s citation and bibliography tools.
Availability can depend on the current Marketplace listing, your Word build, tenant settings, and geography. Verify that the app is still offered and permitted in your environment before relying on it. Whether you use the task pane or a browser, review the article’s references and create a proper Website source in Word when you need a formal citation.
Troubleshooting common citation problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The citation appears in the wrong paragraph | The insertion point was not immediately after the supported sentence | Place the cursor at the correct sentence and insert the saved source again; remove the misplaced citation using Word’s normal editing controls |
| The source is not available in the Insert Citation list | The source was never saved, or you are working in a different document | Open Manage Sources to check the document’s source list. If it is absent, use Add New Source and choose Website |
| The title or URL is wrong everywhere | The original Create Source entry contained a typo or a non-canonical address | Use References > Manage Sources > Edit, replace the incorrect value, and save the record |
| Word shows an unexpected author or date | A field was populated from an assumption rather than from the page or style requirements | Reopen the source, remove unverifiable details, and enter the author or organization and dates supported by the article and your style guide |
| The bibliography is missing | No bibliography component has been inserted at the desired location, or you are using a limited web/mobile build | In desktop Word, click where the list belongs and choose References > Bibliography > Bibliography or Works Cited |
| The Wikipedia page changed after submission | Wikipedia content is editable and revisions occur over time | Include the access date, preserve the URL you consulted, and, for important claims, cite the underlying authoritative source instead |
| You cannot find the Wikipedia Marketplace app | The listing may have changed, or the app may be unavailable for your build, tenant, or geography | Use browser lookup and Word’s standard Website source workflow; do not treat the optional app as required |
A practical workflow for game-related writing
Suppose you are writing about a game and use a Wikipedia article to orient yourself to terminology, release history, or a character’s background. First, read the relevant section and inspect its inline references. If one of those references is a book or paper that directly supports your sentence, record that original work in Word. If your sentence is specifically about how Wikipedia describes the topic, or your instructor permits Wikipedia as the source, create a separate Website record for the article.
Keep the scope of each citation narrow. A sentence that combines a release date, a sales figure, and a development detail may require several sources. Insert each source where it supports a distinct clause rather than placing one Wikipedia citation after a paragraph containing unrelated facts. This makes the final bibliography useful to a reader checking your work.
Before submitting, open the document on the platform you will use for final editing and check that every in-text citation has a corresponding entry in the generated list. Confirm that the page title, URL, author treatment, date information, and access date match the source you actually consulted. If the assignment requires an authoritative source, replace the Wikipedia citation with the cited underlying work instead of assuming Word’s formatting makes the source acceptable.
