WordPress Recovery Mode can get you back into the dashboard after a fatal PHP error by pausing the plugin or theme that triggered it for your administrator session. Use the emailed recovery link, identify the extension named in the notice, deactivate or repair it, then exit Recovery Mode and test the site normally. Recovery Mode is containment—not a backup, rollback, malware cleaner, or permanent repair.

What WordPress Recovery Mode does
Recovery Mode is a built-in WordPress feature introduced in WordPress 5.2. When WordPress detects a fatal PHP error during a normal page load, it can show an explanatory error screen instead of leaving visitors and administrators with a blank page or the “White Screen of Death.” The feature sends the site administrator a special, time-limited login link.

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11After you follow that link and authenticate, WordPress pauses the plugin or theme associated with the fatal error for your administrator session. That temporary pause can let the dashboard load so you can deactivate, update, replace, or otherwise repair the faulty extension. WordPress describes the paused items as extensions because the mechanism applies to both plugins and themes.
The scope matters: Recovery Mode does not rewrite the plugin, restore a backup, remove malware, or make the error disappear for every visitor. The extension remains faulty until you correct the underlying code or leave it deactivated. Exiting Recovery Mode removes the temporary cookie and paused-extension state managed by WordPress core, so a still-broken extension can cause the error again.

When Recovery Mode appears
Activation normally begins when a regular front-end or administrative page request encounters a fatal PHP error. Incompatible updates, defective plugins, broken themes, and recently edited custom code are common causes. WordPress then displays a critical-error message and attempts to email the administrator.
The email contains a description of the technical problem and a unique link for entering Recovery Mode. The link expires after a limited period. WordPress core allows a new link to be sent if the error occurs again after the earlier link has expired, so an expired message does not necessarily mean the site is unrecoverable.

A server-level outage, a hosting control panel you cannot reach, or a mail system that cannot deliver the message is outside the dashboard workflow. In those cases, use the fallback methods described below rather than repeatedly refreshing the broken page.
Before you start: the information and access you need
- Administrator email access: You need access to the address configured for the affected WordPress site, including its spam, quarantine, and filtering folders.
- Administrator credentials: The recovery link does not replace normal authentication. You still sign in with the affected site’s usual dashboard credentials.
- A record of recent changes: Note any plugin or theme installation, update, custom-code edit, or configuration change made shortly before the fatal error. The timing is useful when several extensions are present.
- A second access route: If possible, know whether you can use FTP or your host’s file manager. That access is the practical fallback when the email or dashboard is unavailable.
- A safe place to test: Be ready to test both the public front end and the dashboard after every change. A page that loads for the administrator in Recovery Mode is not proof that the ordinary site is fixed.
Do not treat the recovery link as a substitute for a backup or change-management plan. It is an emergency access mechanism designed to help you make a corrective change while the failing extension is paused.
Step-by-step: use the Recovery Mode email
1. Find the administrator message
Search the administrator inbox for the WordPress critical-error or Recovery Mode message. Check spam, quarantine, forwarding rules, and any mail gateway used by the organization. The message should identify the technical issue and contain the special login link.
Use the link for the affected site, not a link copied from another installation. Because the link is time-limited, open it as soon as possible. If it has expired and the error is encountered again, WordPress may issue a fresh link.

2. Open the link and authenticate
Select the recovery link and log in with the site’s normal administrator account. A successful login should place you in the dashboard with a Recovery Mode notice. The notice identifies the plugin, theme, or other extension associated with the fatal error when WordPress can determine one.

Keep the Recovery Mode browser session open while you investigate. The pause is tied to that administrator session; opening a separate, ordinary browser window can produce a different result because the extension is not necessarily paused there.
3. Read the error notice before changing anything
Record the extension name, the error text, and any file or line information shown in the notice. If the message points to a plugin, open Plugins. If it points to the active theme, use Appearance > Themes. A recently changed custom-code file may require correcting the edit rather than changing a dashboard setting.
When several changes happened together, start with the extension explicitly named by the notice. Do not deactivate unrelated extensions at random; each extra change makes it harder to identify the cause and can remove features your site needs for testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Contain the failing extension
Choose the least destructive action that can restore a normal request:
- Deactivate a plugin: In Plugins, deactivate the plugin identified by the Recovery Mode notice. This is the quickest containment step when the plugin is not required for the dashboard to render.
- Switch away from a broken theme: In Appearance > Themes, activate a known-working theme if the active theme is named in the error. The change may alter the site’s presentation, but it can confirm that the theme is the failing component.
- Update an extension: If the developer has released a compatible fix and the dashboard offers the update, apply it only after recording the current state. An update can repair an incompatibility, but it does not guarantee that unrelated custom code is safe.
- Correct custom code: If the notice identifies code you recently edited, restore the last known-good version or remove the offending change through your normal deployment process. Recovery Mode itself does not edit PHP files.
Deactivation is an immediate containment measure, not a code repair. If the extension is business-critical, plan a proper update or correction before reactivating it.
5. Exit Recovery Mode deliberately
After making the change, use the Exit Recovery Mode control in the admin bar or in the Recovery Mode notice. WordPress then clears the recovery cookie and the paused-plugin or paused-theme state managed by core.
Do not exit first and investigate later. Once the temporary pause is removed, an extension that still throws a fatal error can lock you out again. If you need more investigation, leave the session in Recovery Mode while collecting the error details and deciding whether the extension should remain deactivated.

6. Verify in a normal session
Open the front end in a fresh private window or another browser, then load the dashboard in a normal, non-Recovery session. Check the pages affected by the original error and any critical workflows such as login, publishing, forms, or media uploads that depend on the changed extension.
If the fatal error returns immediately after exit, the underlying code is still faulty. Re-enter Recovery Mode with the new link, keep the extension deactivated, and pursue a compatible update, a code correction, or hosting assistance rather than repeatedly toggling the same setting.
How to decide whether the plugin, theme, or code is at fault
Plugin named in the notice
A plugin name or path in the notice is the strongest available starting point. Deactivate only that plugin, then test again outside Recovery Mode. If the site works, leave the plugin deactivated while you obtain a compatible release or inspect the change that caused the failure. Reactivating it without a fix simply recreates the same risk.
Theme named in the notice
Use Appearance > Themes to switch away from the named theme. A theme change can affect layouts and menus, so document the active theme and its settings before making the switch when the dashboard allows it. If the error disappears, repair or update the theme before restoring it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Custom code or no extension identified
Some fatal errors point to a custom file or do not identify a single extension with certainty. Compare the file and line information with your latest code change. Restore a known-good version through your normal deployment or file-management process, and avoid editing a production PHP file blindly when the error details are unclear.
If the notice does not provide a usable culprit, use the timing of recent changes and the available error information to narrow the scope. A hosting professional may need to inspect server logs when the dashboard cannot expose enough detail.
What to do when the Recovery Mode email never arrives
Check delivery before changing site files
- Confirm the administrator address configured for the site and check every spam, quarantine, and filtered-mail folder.
- Ask whether a mail gateway, forwarding rule, or organizational filter rejected the message.
- Check the host’s mail settings and delivery logs if those controls are available. WordPress notes that the recovery message may be sent directly by the web server when a mail-changing plugin has not loaded yet; an untrusted server mail configuration, poor sending reputation, or filtering can still prevent delivery.
- Trigger the error again only when you can observe the result and have a current backup or a clear rollback plan. A new occurrence after an expired link can cause WordPress to send a new recovery link, but repeated triggering is not a repair strategy.
If delivery cannot be restored promptly, move to a file-access fallback rather than waiting indefinitely.

Temporarily rename the suspected plugin directory
With FTP or your hosting file manager, locate the plugin directory named by the error. Rename that directory so WordPress cannot load it. WordPress gives this example: rename /wp-content/plugins/hello-dolly to wp-content/plugins/hello-dolly-1/. Apply the same pattern to the directory for the plugin identified in your error information.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use the exact directory name and change only the suspected extension. A typo or broad rename can disable multiple plugins and make diagnosis harder. After the site becomes accessible, open Plugins, confirm which extension is unavailable, and leave it deactivated while you repair or update it. Rename the directory back only when you are ready to test a corrected version.
If the error points to a theme, the equivalent file-level change is more sensitive because WordPress needs a usable theme. Use the dashboard’s theme switch when possible; otherwise, ask your host or a WordPress professional to help identify a safe replacement.
Choosing the right recovery route
| Route | Email available? | Dashboard login? | Failing extension identified? | Access required | Typical action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery Mode link | Yes | Usually, after authentication | Often named in the notice | Administrator email and credentials | Pause, deactivate, update, or repair the extension, then exit and test |
| Mail troubleshooting | No message received | Not yet established | May be available from the error screen or logs | Administrator mailbox and host mail settings | Check address, spam, filtering, and server delivery configuration |
| FTP or file manager | Not required | Not required initially | Best when the error log names a plugin | Hosting file access | Temporarily rename the suspected plugin directory |
| Hosting or professional support | Not required | Not required | Can be investigated from server logs | Support access to the hosting account | Diagnose server-level failures or inaccessible control panels and apply a controlled fix |
The deciding questions are practical: can the administrator receive the message, can the dashboard be reached, does the error name an extension, and is FTP or file-manager access available? Choose the least invasive route that gives you enough information to make a reversible change.

The link says it has expired
Recovery links are time-limited. If the fatal error occurs again after expiry, WordPress can send a new link. Request or trigger a current recovery message only after confirming that the administrator address and mail delivery path are correct. An expired link does not repair the extension and should not be reused as evidence that the site is permanently down.
The link opens, but the dashboard still fails
Authenticate with the affected site’s administrator account and verify that the link belongs to that installation. If the fatal error occurs before WordPress can complete the recovery session, use the error details to identify the extension and rename its directory through FTP or the host file manager. A server outage or a failure outside WordPress requires the host rather than a dashboard procedure.
The front end works only while Recovery Mode is active
This indicates that the extension is still being paused for your administrator session. Exit Recovery Mode and test in a clean session. If the error returns, leave the extension deactivated and repair or update it before trying again; the temporary session state is not a permanent fix.

Deactivating the named plugin does not solve the problem
Recheck the exact extension and file path in the notice. The error may involve a theme, custom code, or a second extension exposed only after the first one is disabled. Work from the latest error message and make one controlled change at a time. If no clear culprit emerges, provide the host or a qualified professional with the error text and timing so server logs can be examined.
The site owner cannot access the hosting panel
Recovery Mode cannot bypass a locked hosting account, a server outage, or an unavailable file system. Contact the hosting provider or a qualified WordPress professional, explain that the site is returning a fatal PHP error, and provide the administrator email, the visible error text, and any extension named by the notice. Do not claim that Recovery Mode can repair infrastructure it cannot reach.
Technical details for administrators and developers
WordPress core exposes wp_is_recovery_mode() as a check for whether the current request is running in Recovery Mode. The developer reference states that plugins or themes causing White Screen of Death errors are paused in that mode.
The core Recovery Mode implementation handles initialization, error handling, exit, and cleanup. Its exit process clears the recovery cookie and the paused-plugin and paused-theme state. This explains why an extension that appears harmless during the recovery session can fail again immediately after you leave it.
The pause is client-specific: WordPress pauses the faulty extension for the administrator’s recovery session so the administrator can access the backend. It is not a global quarantine mechanism, and it does not change the extension’s files. Treat the notice as a controlled opportunity to diagnose and correct the cause, not as evidence that the extension has been repaired.
After the site is back online
- Keep the faulty plugin or theme deactivated until a compatible update or code correction is available.
- Retest both the public site and the dashboard outside Recovery Mode, including the page or action that originally triggered the fatal error.
- Document the extension version, the error text, the file or line named, and the change that restored access.
- Re-enable an extension only when you understand the correction and can test the result in a normal session.
- If the same failure returns, stop toggling the extension and obtain hosting or professional help with the current error details.
These steps turn a temporary access recovery into a repeatable diagnosis. The central rule is simple: Recovery Mode gives you a safe administrator session; the extension still needs a real fix, a compatible replacement, or deliberate deactivation.
