To use WorldEdit on a server, install the build that matches your Minecraft Java Edition server software, grant access to the players who need it, select a region, then run an edit command such as //set. WorldEdit is not for vanilla-only servers, Realms, Bedrock Edition, Windows 10 Edition, or Pocket Edition; the right download depends on whether your server uses Paper/Spigot, NeoForge, Fabric, or Sponge. WorldEdit’s installation guide lists supported platforms and setup paths.

Check your Minecraft edition and server software

WorldEdit’s current installation guide is for Minecraft Java Edition. Before downloading anything, identify the software your server actually runs: the plugin and mod builds are not interchangeable.

  • Paper or Spigot: Use the Bukkit-compatible plugin build. The WorldEdit guide recommends Paper over Spigot for available improvements.
  • NeoForge: Use the matching NeoForge mod build.
  • Fabric: Use a WorldEdit build intended for Fabric and your Minecraft version.
  • Sponge: Follow the Sponge-specific instructions and download distribution referenced by the WorldEdit guide.

Do not install a Paper/Spigot plugin into a mod server, or assume a mod build works as a Bukkit plugin. The ecosystems require their matching builds. The guide excludes Realms, Windows 10 Edition, Bedrock Edition, and Pocket Edition. See the supported platforms and installation guide.

Install the matching WorldEdit build

Paper or Spigot

  1. Confirm the server is running Paper or Spigot and note its Minecraft version.
  2. Download the WorldEdit build for that version from the download location linked by the official guide.
  3. Put the WorldEdit .jar file in the server’s plugins folder. Create the folder if it does not exist.
  4. Start or restart the server, then check the startup log for errors.

NeoForge, Fabric, or Sponge

Choose a build that matches both the Minecraft version and the server platform. NeoForge server installs use the mods folder. For Sponge, use the Sponge server setup instructions and the distribution referenced by the WorldEdit guide. Avoid mixing plugin and mod files. The installation guide has platform-specific directions.

Give players permission to use WorldEdit

WorldEdit access is not granted automatically: “By default, no one can use WorldEdit,” according to the WorldEdit permissions documentation. Grant access only to the players who need it. You can use operator status where appropriate or assign WorldEdit permission nodes through a permissions plugin. The broad worldedit.* node grants full WorldEdit access; use narrower individual nodes when players should have only selected capabilities.

Select a region and make your first edit

For a basic cuboid edit, mark two opposite corners and fill the selection. The cuboid follows the world’s axes and cannot be rotated. The selection guide covers the wand and other selection methods.

  • ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.

  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

  1. In-game, run //wand to get the selection wand. By default it is a wooden axe.
  2. Left-click one corner of the area with the wand, then right-click the opposite corner.
  3. Alternatively, use //pos1 and //pos2 to set the two positions, or use coordinate forms when you know the locations.
  4. Run //set <block-or-pattern> to fill the selected region. For example, replace the placeholder with a block name or pattern you intend to use.
  5. If the edit is wrong, run //undo to reverse the last action in WorldEdit history.

Use //help in-game to see command listings. Exact command access depends on your permissions. For command syntax, consult the WorldEdit commands reference.

Understand selection outlines before relying on them

The server-side //drawsel outline is not an unlimited preview. It works for cuboid selections up to 48 × 48 × 48 blocks; older versions have a 32 × 32 × 32 limit, and the feature requires creative mode. For a client-side selection overlay, the documentation points to WorldEdit CUI, a Fabric mod. Check the installation guide and selection guide for the relevant details: installation and selections.

Troubleshoot commands that do not work

  • No WorldEdit commands are recognized: Confirm that the server is not vanilla-only and that WorldEdit is installed for the server implementation you are running.
  • The plugin or mod fails to load: Check that the WorldEdit build matches the Minecraft version and the server platform; then inspect the server startup log.
  • You can see the commands but cannot use them: Check the player’s operator status or assigned permission nodes. By default, players have no WorldEdit access.
  • The log is hard to find: On current versions, check logs/latest.log in the server directory. If you use a game-server host, its log viewer may provide access to the same startup information.

The WorldEdit FAQ also recommends checking the server log when troubleshooting installation problems.

Change configuration only when needed

Configuration paths depend on the platform, and support for individual settings can differ. The WorldEdit 7.3 configuration documentation lists plugins/WorldEdit/config.yml for Bukkit, config/worldedit/worldedit.properties for NeoForge/Fabric, and config/worldedit/worldedit.conf for Sponge. The Bukkit YAML file is indentation-sensitive, so preserve its structure when editing it. Consult the platform configuration reference before changing settings.
