Use a memorable moment from your YouTube live stream as a short preview, then give viewers a clear link to the live event or its replay. YouTube Clips are 5–60-second excerpts that loop from the original video’s watch page; Studio highlights are separately edited videos. For promotion, plan ahead: YouTube recommends sharing the streaming link at least 48 hours before going live.

Choose the right format: Clip, highlight, or Short

These options serve different purposes. A Clip points back to its source video, while a Studio highlight is an edited video you publish. A Short highlight is available only for certain mobile livestreams.

Format Where it plays Timing and length Best use
YouTube Clip Loops from the original video’s watch page; share by link, social platform, email, or embed. 5–60 seconds. A livestream Clip may not be available until the stream has ended and uploaded; DVR limits can affect availability. Quickly share a source moment and direct people to the original stream or replay.
Studio highlight A separately created video with a title, privacy setting, and description. Can be created during or after a stream. YouTube’s highlight help does not specify a fixed duration. Publish a selected moment as an edited video asset.
Short highlight A Short created from an eligible mobile livestream. Eligibility requires a 10-minute-to-12-hour vertical stream made with the YouTube mobile app, chat enabled, not Made for Kids, and compliance with safety standards. It saves as private by default. Use when the stream qualifies and you want to publish a Short; change visibility to public if you want it discoverable.
Video Clips & Shorts Studio tool A new video or Short upload/draft, distinct from a viewer Clip attached to the source watch page. For an existing long-form video; transcript selection, timestamps, or AI suggestions may be available. Build a standalone video from an existing upload.

Prepare the stream promotion before you go live

  1. Schedule or prepare the event. Make sure you have the stream’s URL ready to share.
  2. Share the link early. YouTube recommends sharing the streaming link at least 48 hours before going live. YouTube also suggests connecting social accounts and embedding the event URL on a website.
  3. Write a useful preview. Tell viewers what the stream will cover and when it starts, and pair the clip with a direct route to the scheduled stream. This sets expectations; it does not guarantee more viewers.

Mark moments while streaming

When something worth sharing happens, add a stream marker in YouTube Studio if your workflow allows. Markers make it easier to find candidate moments when you create a highlight later.

YouTube recommends creating highlight clips during the event, but distinguish that promotion advice from the viewer-facing Clip workflow: a Clip from a livestream may not play until the stream has ended and uploaded. Don’t promise that a Clip will be a real-time promotional asset.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Create and share a Clip from the stream

  1. Sign in to YouTube on a computer and open an eligible video. Once the livestream archive is available, use that video as the source.
  2. Select More → Clip.
  3. Choose a title of up to 140 characters and adjust the selection to between 5 and 60 seconds.
  4. Share the Clip by copying its link, embedding it, or using the available social or email options. Add context and a direct link to the live event or replay so viewers know where to go next.

On mobile, open the video in the YouTube app, choose the Clip option, adjust the selection slider, then use the sharing options. Viewers must be able to watch the original video to watch its Clip.

Create a Studio highlight

  1. Use stream markers to locate promising moments in YouTube Studio, if you added them.
  2. Create a highlight during or after the stream, trim the segment, and set its title, privacy, and description.
  3. Publish it with a clear route to the scheduled stream or archive where relevant.

A highlight is not the same as a Clip: it is a trimmed video created in Studio, and YouTube’s cited highlight instructions do not give it the Clip feature’s 5–60-second length range.

Turn an eligible mobile livestream into a Short highlight

YouTube’s Short highlight option has specific conditions. The stream must be vertical, run 10 minutes to 12 hours, use the YouTube mobile app, have chat enabled, not be marked Made for Kids, and meet YouTube’s safety standards. A saved highlight is private by default; change its visibility to public if you want it to reach viewers through public discovery. If any eligibility condition is not met, use a Clip or Studio highlight instead.

Keep the archive and Clips available

  • Leave the source archive public if you want the broadest opportunity for people to find it later; YouTube recommends public archives as part of live-stream promotion.
  • Clips depend on the source video. They may stop working if the original is deleted, made private, or violates Community Guidelines.
  • Creators can turn off viewer clipping in YouTube Studio settings. If clipping is disabled, viewers cannot make new Clips from that video.
  • Review Clips made from your videos in the Clips library and Studio, where you can also inspect Clip views and other performance details.
  • Organize the archive and highlights into playlists so viewers can find related streams.

Troubleshoot a Clip that will not play or share

Symptom Likely reason What to check
A Clip from a live event is unavailable immediately. The live stream may need to end and upload before the Clip is available. Wait until the archive is ready, then try the Clip again.
A Clip cannot play the selected moment. The stream may not have DVR enabled, or the segment may fall outside the available DVR window. Check whether DVR was available and whether the source segment is within its window; use an available archived segment or a Studio highlight.
A Clip link no longer works. The original may have been deleted, made private, or removed for a Community Guidelines violation. Check the source video’s availability and privacy; restore public access if appropriate and permitted, or share a new asset from an available source.
The Clip option is missing. The video may not allow clipping, or you may not be using the eligible-video workflow. Open the video in YouTube, check its clipping availability, and for a creator-controlled alternative make a highlight in Studio.
A mobile-stream Short highlight is not offered. One or more mobile-stream eligibility conditions may not be met. Check duration, vertical format, YouTube mobile app use, chat, Made for Kids status, and safety eligibility.

Promote responsibly and set realistic expectations

A Clip can make a strong moment easy to share, but YouTube’s guidance does not establish that Clips increase viewers or guarantee that people will convert into live attendees. Treat the clip as a preview: make the subject and event time clear, then provide a direct destination. Keep the original accessible for as long as you want its Clips to work.

Before going live, also check YouTube’s livestream eligibility rules: creators need a verified channel with no livestream restriction in the past 90 days, and users must be at least 16 to livestream. Follow copyright rules for the stream and anything you include in its highlight; a promotional clip does not change the rights or platform rules that apply to its source.
