You can promote an always-on YouTube channel in two different ways: make the live stream vertical so people may discover it while browsing Shorts, and publish Shorts that point viewers toward a compelling moment or scheduled event. Neither path guarantees views, and an ordinary Short is not guaranteed to link directly to your live stream.
If you’re asking, “Can people find my live stream while scrolling Shorts?”—yes, YouTube says viewers can find vertical live streams there, including people who do not already subscribe. Here’s how to set up that discovery path and use promotional clips without treating a continuous broadcast like a one-time event.
How to use YouTube Shorts to promote a 24/7 live stream
Use the approach that matches what you are promoting:
- For ongoing discovery: offer a vertical version of the live stream. Viewers browsing Shorts on the YouTube app may encounter it in the vertical live experience.
- For a specific moment or event: publish a promotional Short or teaser that gives viewers a reason to watch, and share the scheduled stream link ahead of time.
- For an eligible mobile live broadcast: save a highlight as a Short when a strong moment happens. This is a restricted workflow, not a general feature for every 24/7 encoder stream.
YouTube’s guidance supports these discovery and promotion options, but does not promise placement, audience size, or a particular number of viewers. The platform’s Help pages cited here were accessed October 3, 2026; publication dates were not stated, and features may change.

Can people find my live stream while scrolling Shorts?
Yes, if viewers are browsing YouTube Shorts and your stream has a vertical viewing version. YouTube says viewers who are not already subscribed can also find vertical live streams in Shorts. This is a potential discovery surface, not a guarantee that YouTube will show a particular stream to a particular viewer.
YouTube Live Control Room supports simultaneous horizontal and vertical versions. When dual streaming, people browsing Shorts on mobile see the vertical version, and both versions use the same live chat. Prepare a vertical version that works on a phone
A horizontal scene cropped into portrait can cut off the very thing a viewer needs to understand. Before going live, review the vertical preview in Live Control Room and choose a suitable layout where available, such as center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked. Keep faces, game action, captions, and other important details inside the visible portrait area.

- Plan the portrait composition. Decide what a mobile viewer should see first. For a game stream, keep key action and any essential on-screen text away from the edges likely to be cropped.
- Review the vertical preview in Live Control Room. Check that the chosen layout preserves the subject and readable details. Adjust the scene or layout before starting if it does not.
- Enable the vertical version before going live. If you want viewers browsing Shorts to see the broadcast, configure the vertical stream as part of the initial dual-stream setup. It cannot be added once the stream has started.
- Make the call to action work without chat links. In the vertical live experience, viewers cannot click links in chat or the channel description. Say or show your channel name and explain what to search for or when to return, rather than relying on a clickable link.

Use promotional Shorts for a specific reason to watch
A promotional Short works best when it gives the viewer a clear reason to care now: a striking gameplay moment, a recurring segment, a useful process, a scheduled guest, or an upcoming event. State plainly that the channel has an ongoing live stream and identify when the featured segment or event is happening. Treat this as a practical editorial choice, not a claim about YouTube’s recommendation ranking.
YouTube recommends creating a teaser or trailer and sharing the stream link at least 48 hours before an event. Keep the Short and destination aligned. If the clip promotes a scheduled tournament, for example, tell viewers the event time and direct them to the channel or scheduled stream. If it highlights a recurring show on an always-on channel, name the show and say when it appears. A Short can raise awareness, but do not assume every ordinary Short gives viewers a direct link into the live broadcast.
When a live moment can become a Short highlight
YouTube documents a save-as-Short highlight workflow for some mobile live streams. The stream must meet all of these conditions:

- It is vertical and streamed in the YouTube mobile app.
- It is not a screencast.
- Chat is enabled.
- It is not marked Made for Kids and meets YouTube’s safety standards.
The saved highlight defaults to private. If it is ready for viewers, deliberately change its visibility to Public. YouTube Help says setting a highlight’s visibility to “Public” can increase the reach of live content in the Shorts feed; that is platform guidance, not a guaranteed outcome. These conditions matter for 24/7 channels: an encoder-based broadcast is not automatically eligible for this mobile-app highlight workflow. If your broadcast does not qualify, you can still edit and publish a separate promotional Short, subject to YouTube’s current upload and content rules.
Use scheduled-stream notifications for planned programming
Viewers browsing Shorts can opt into notifications for scheduled streams that begin within the next 24 hours. This is useful for a planned event or featured programming slot, not a dependable notification mechanism for every moment of a perpetual stream. Schedule the event, promote it with a teaser, and make the start time clear. YouTube describes the notification prompt in its live-streaming guidance.

Check whether the approach is working
Use YouTube Studio’s traffic sources to check whether viewers arrive from the vertical live feed. Compare activity around a specific event or promotional Short with your own channel’s baseline, and avoid claiming a Shorts conversion rate unless your channel analytics support it. A rise or dip in viewers alone does not establish that a Short caused it.

Promotion does not make a broadcast’s content exempt from YouTube’s rules. Before using game footage, music, clips, or other material, check that you have the rights or permissions needed for the way you use it and that the content follows YouTube policies. A teaser or highlight can still create copyright or policy issues if it includes material you are not entitled to use.
