For a YouTube-only podcast, use OBS Studio to produce and send the stream directly to YouTube. Add Restream when you want a cloud relay to distribute that OBS output to other platforms. Neither OBS nor Restream is documented as a guaranteed 24/7 uptime solution, and YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its archive.
OBS vs. Restream: what each one does
OBS Studio is the production encoder: it combines your camera or prerecorded material, scenes, overlays, and audio, then sends the finished output to a streaming destination. OBS is free and open source. OBS Studio documents production controls including scene composition, audio mixing, and filters.
Restream is a cloud multistream relay. OBS sends one output to Restream, which can distribute it to selected platforms. Restream documents account connection and manual stream-key setup in its OBS connection guide. YouTube also describes the general relay approach in its guide to streaming across platforms.

Which should you choose for a podcast?
Choose OBS direct to YouTube if YouTube is the only destination
OBS gives you the production controls you need while avoiding an extra relay in the workflow. Configure the YouTube stream URL and key in OBS, then use its scenes and audio controls to build the show.
Add Restream if you need other platforms
Keep OBS as the production interface and connect it to Restream when sending the same show to several destinations is useful. A relay can reduce the need for separate computer-side outputs, which matters when local compute or upload capacity is a constraint. Restream’s channel limits, branding, recording, video-quality details, and paid features can change; check the current plan information before choosing a tier.

For an always-on channel, plan the operation separately
Choosing an encoder or relay does not by itself establish a 24/7 recovery plan. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health, testing with realistic audio and motion, matching bitrate to upload capacity, and keeping a local archive backup. Decide who will respond to interruptions and how you will restart the stream; the cited documentation does not establish an automated restart method or guaranteed uptime.
How to set up OBS for a YouTube podcast stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. Check your channel’s live-stream eligibility and enable the feature before the show. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, and current eligibility guidance requires no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. - Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s live-control workflow, create or schedule the event and obtain its stream URL and stream key. In OBS, enter those under the stream settings for the YouTube service, or use the provided server URL and key fields if configuring manually. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with guests. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the stream URL and key workflow.
- Build the production in OBS. Add the sources you need—such as a camera, gameplay capture, prerecorded segments, or graphics—then arrange them into scenes. Set and balance microphone, remote guest, and media audio in the mixer. Use filters only where they solve a specific production need, and preview scene changes before going live.
- Set output quality to match your connection and show. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently. YouTube publishes recommended encoder settings and bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate; consult its current live encoder settings guide rather than assuming one bitrate fits every show. Configure keyframes in line with YouTube’s encoder recommendations on that page.
- Test the complete path. Use representative speech, music you have rights to use, motion, scene changes, and any guest audio. Check YouTube’s live preview and stream-health indicators, listen for clipping or dropouts, and verify the image remains stable before treating the setup as ready.
- Record a separate local copy. If preserving the episode matters, enable local recording in OBS and verify the file is growing during the broadcast. Keep an independent copy where practical; YouTube recommends a local archive backup.
- Go live and monitor. Start streaming from OBS, confirm the event is receiving the signal, then continue checking stream health and the local recording rather than assuming that a live indicator means the full program is being archived.
Can I use OBS with Restream?
Yes. Connect OBS to a Restream account using Restream’s documented connection workflow, or configure the stream key manually. OBS remains where you produce the show; Restream receives that output and relays it to selected destinations. Before relying on the free tier or selecting a paid plan, confirm the current number and types of channels allowed and any branding, recording, or quality limits in Restream’s current plan explanation.

Does OBS stream to more than one platform?
The workflow described here sends OBS’s output to YouTube directly, or sends one OBS output to Restream for onward distribution. If you choose a local multistream arrangement instead, you need sufficient computer resources and upload capacity for that setup; the sources here do not specify a particular local configuration or its performance. Restream’s relay is useful when you want one incoming stream distributed to multiple destinations, subject to its current plan and destination limits.
Will YouTube save an always-on livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only recording for an always-on stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a local archive backup. Troubleshooting an always-on stream
- You cannot start the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and allow for the first-time enablement period, which YouTube says can take up to 24 hours. Check the event’s stream URL and key in OBS.
- YouTube shows poor stream health or the stream drops: Check the encoder settings and available upload capacity. Lower the bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, then test again using YouTube’s recommended settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Audio or motion behaves differently from the test: Test using realistic speech, music, scene changes, and motion. Recheck audio levels and OBS source routing, then verify the live preview and stream-health status.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a local OBS recording and confirm the file is growing while the stream runs.
- A destination is unavailable through Restream: Check the current Restream plan’s channel count and destination eligibility, then confirm the account connection or manually entered stream key. Plan limits and features can change.
- The stream stops and you need recovery: Monitor the stream and have an operator or documented restart procedure. The official documentation cited here does not promise uninterrupted uptime or specify an automatic recovery mechanism for OBS or Restream.
