How to Verify a Pokémon Card’s Set, Rarity, and Number Before Buying

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify a Pokémon card by matching three identifiers on the card itself: its expansion or set symbol, its collector number (such as 23/189), and its rarity or printing treatment. Then confirm that combination in the checklist for that exact set, and compare the listing’s language, foil pattern, promo markings, condition, and photographs. Artwork or the Pokémon’s name alone does not identify a specific printing.

A wrong set symbol or number is a concrete counterfeit warning. If a card still looks doubtful, use the bright-light check recommended by Pokémon Support and have a specialist trading-card shop examine it; neither step replaces matching the card to an authoritative set list.

The three identifiers that establish which card you are buying

Start with the physical card, not the seller’s title. Every Pokémon card has a collector card number, and the lower edge normally also carries a set or expansion mark and a rarity symbol. Together, those details identify the object in the listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Set or expansion: the small symbol or expansion code printed near the lower edge.
  • Collector number: usually written as XXX/YYY, for example 23/189.
  • Rarity or printing treatment: the symbol and, on newer cards, the specific foil or rarity label used by that expansion.

Record all three before you search. Two cards can show the same Pokémon and similar artwork while belonging to different expansions, languages, rarities, or promotional printings. Those are different objects and may have very different prices.

How to read the lower edge of a Pokémon card

Find the set symbol or expansion code

Hold the card upright and inspect the lower edge, usually close to the collector number. Depending on the era, you may see a pictorial set symbol, a short expansion code, or both. Write it down exactly, including letters, numbers, and unusual capitalization. Do not identify a set from the artwork alone: recurring artwork, alternate layouts, and reprints make visual matching unreliable.

Find the collector number

The number is commonly printed as a numerator and denominator separated by a slash. TCGplayer’s reference describes this as a collector card number present on every Pokémon card. Copy the complete expression, not just the first number. 23/189 and 23/198 point to different set lists even though the numerator is the same.

Record the rarity mark and visible treatment

The rarity mark sits near the lower edge and can be easy to confuse with a decorative icon. Note whether the card is non-holo, holofoil, reverse-holo, or has another visible foil treatment, and record any text such as PROMO. Modern expansions use more labels and star treatments than older sets, so the set’s own rarity legend controls the interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the set and number in an authoritative checklist

Search the card name together with the exact collector number, then open the checklist for the identified expansion. Official Pokémon expansion checklists are the best reference for the set’s card-number sequence and rarity legend. A reputable Pokémon TCG database can help locate the list, but verify unusual cards against an official checklist when one is available.

  1. Transcribe the card name, set symbol or code, full collector number, rarity mark, language, and any promo or printing text.
  2. Search the card name plus the complete number, such as Example Pokémon 23/189. Add the set name if the search returns multiple printings.
  3. Open the checklist for that expansion and confirm that the name, artwork or variant, number, and rarity all appear together.
  4. Compare the checklist image with the seller’s photographs. Check the lower-edge typography, symbol shape, foil pattern, and any edition or promo marker.
  5. Stop and ask the seller for clearer photographs if one of those identifiers cannot be read. Do not infer a missing value from a similar listing.

A mismatch between the printed set symbol and the checklist, or between the printed number and the card listed at that position, is a specific counterfeit warning identified in TCGplayer’s authentication guidance. It can also indicate that the seller mislabeled the card, so resolve the discrepancy before paying.

What the number in XXX/YYY means

The numerator identifies the card’s position

The number before the slash is the card’s position in that expansion’s numbered sequence. It is not a universal Pokémon catalogue number and does not carry across sets. A card numbered 23 in one expansion is unrelated to card 23 in another unless every other identifier also matches.

The denominator is the advertised main-set size

The number after the slash is the advertised size of the set’s main numbered run. For example, 23/189 places the card at position 23 in a 189-card sequence. Use the denominator to select the right checklist; do not use it as a value estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the numerator is higher than the denominator

A card such as 203/189 is not automatically misprinted. A numerator beyond the advertised denominator commonly identifies a secret rare or another card printed outside the main numbered run. Confirm the exact number in the expansion’s checklist. If the checklist does not contain that number, investigate the set, language, and seller photographs rather than assuming the card is genuine.

How to interpret rarity symbols across different eras

The basic rarity key is consistent for many older cards, but modern expansions add treatments. Always use the legend printed or published for the specific set.

Mark or treatment Common interpretation Important qualification
Circle Common Confirm with the expansion checklist; layout and legends can change.
Diamond Uncommon Use the exact set legend when the symbol is faint or stylized.
Single star Rare A star alone does not identify every modern rarity tier.
Star with PROMO text Promotional card Verify the promo identifier and release context separately from a regular expansion.
Modern double-star, multiple-star, or illustration treatments Set-specific modern rarity categories, including double-rare, ultra-rare, and illustration-rare treatments in Scarlet & Violet-era expansions Read the Scarlet & Violet expansion’s own legend; do not translate a modern mark using an older set’s key.

Foil is a treatment, not a substitute for rarity identification. A reverse-holo version and a holo version can share a name and number while being different printings in a checklist. Record the treatment exactly as shown in the listing and card images.

Compare the listing’s object, not just its artwork

When two listings appear to show the same card, compare every field below. The seller’s title may omit a variant or use a generic Pokémon name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison field What to verify in the photos or description Why it matters
Expansion or set Set symbol or expansion code matches the stated set. Identical artwork can be reused in different expansions.
Collector number Full numerator and denominator, including any number above the main-set size. The number pins the card to a specific checklist entry.
Language Text language and any regional layout differences. A card in another language is a different printing even when the image is the same.
Rarity and foil Circle, diamond, star, modern rarity treatment, holo, or reverse-holo finish. Small treatment differences can identify separate checklist entries.
Promo or printing marker PROMO text, special stamp, or other release marker. Promotional cards are not interchangeable with regular expansion cards.
Condition Edges, corners, surface scratches, dents, whitening, and centering in the actual photos. Condition affects what you receive and its value independently of identity.
Seller photographs Front and back, sharp lower-edge close-up, and consistent lighting. Stock art cannot establish that the seller owns the claimed copy.

A before-buying verification procedure

Step 1: Ask for identifying photographs

Request an in-focus front and back image of the exact card, plus a close-up of the lower edge. For expensive cards, ask for a photograph taken at an angle that shows the foil pattern and surface condition. A cropped image that hides the number or symbol leaves the key evidence missing.

Step 2: Transcribe rather than guess

Copy the set mark, collector number, rarity symbol, language, and promo text character by character. If glare obscures a symbol, mark it as unreadable and ask for another image; do not fill the gap from memory.

Step 3: Locate the expansion checklist

Use the name and exact number to find the expansion-specific checklist. Confirm that the printed number exists and that its listed Pokémon, rarity, and treatment match the photograph.

Step 4: Resolve numbering outside the main run

If the numerator exceeds the denominator, look for that exact secret-rare or supplementary entry in the checklist. Treat an absent entry as an unresolved discrepancy, not proof of a rare error card.

Step 5: Compare physical details

Check typography, spacing, symbol shape, borders, color registration, holo pattern, and the back design against official product images or a known genuine card from the same era. One visual difference is not conclusive by itself, but several differences combined with data mismatches are serious.

Step 6: Check the seller’s description against the object

Make sure the stated language, set, number, rarity, foil, promo status, and condition describe the photographed card. A listing that uses a high-rarity title while showing a common symbol should be corrected before purchase or avoided.

Step 7: Evaluate the transaction risk

Consider whether the seller supplies original photographs, answers identification questions, and offers a clear return process. Pokémon Support warns that dramatically underpriced sealed product can be a warning sign, but it publishes no universal percentage or price cutoff. Treat price as a reason to verify more carefully, not as a mathematical authenticity test.

Step 8: Save your evidence

Keep screenshots of the listing, the card photographs, the checklist entry, and your messages. This record helps you compare the delivered card and supports a return or marketplace dispute if the item differs.

Authenticity checks when the data looks suspicious

Use the bright-light check as an escalation step

Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards can often be seen through under bright light. Compare how light passes through the suspect card with a known genuine card from a similar era and construction. Use the test as one signal only: lighting, card thickness, sleeves, and camera exposure can mislead. Do not damage a card by bending, tearing, or applying liquids.

Compare with official product images

Look at official images for the relevant expansion or product and compare the printed layout, borders, logo placement, and expected foil treatment. Product images are useful for spotting a wrong design, but they do not replace checking the exact collector number in the checklist.

Have a specialist examine it

For a valuable or disputed card, take it to a specialist trading-card shop. Pokémon Support specifically recommends specialist evaluation for potentially counterfeit cards. Bring the card, listing record, and checklist match. An in-person opinion is an escalation option, not a reason to skip the identification sequence.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Relying on the Pokémon’s name: search the full number and set as well; names and artwork recur.
  • Reading only the numerator: retain the denominator because it distinguishes set sequences.
  • Assuming a star always means the same rarity: check the era-specific legend, especially for Scarlet & Violet cards.
  • Calling every number above the denominator an error: verify secret-rare and supplementary entries first.
  • Accepting a stock photograph: request images of the exact copy, including its lower edge and back.
  • Treating foil as proof of authenticity: counterfeiters can imitate shine; data and physical comparisons must agree.
  • Using price as proof: an unusually low price is a warning to investigate, not a reliable counterfeit threshold.
  • Ignoring language: confirm that the photographed text matches the language in the listing and the card you intend to buy.

Worked identification examples

Example: a standard numbered card

You see a card marked 23/189 with a diamond. Record the set symbol beside it, locate the 189-card expansion checklist, and confirm that card 23 is the pictured Pokémon and that the checklist labels it uncommon. If the seller calls it a rare holo while the card shows a diamond and no matching foil treatment, the listing is describing a different object.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: a number above the set size

A listing shows 203/189 and a modern star treatment. Do not reject it solely because 203 is greater than 189. Find 203 in the expansion’s supplementary or secret-rare entries, then verify the artwork, treatment, and language. If no official entry matches, pause the purchase and ask the seller for clarification.

Example: matching artwork, different printing

Two listings show the same Pokémon pose. One has a circle and 45/198; the other has a star, a different denominator, and a promo marker. They are not interchangeable. Compare each to its own checklist entry and decide which specific printing you want.

What to do if the card fails verification after delivery

  1. Photograph the card front, back, lower edge, packaging, and shipping label immediately.
  2. Compare the delivered identifiers with the saved listing and the expansion checklist.
  3. Do not alter, clean, crease, or remove marks from the card while the dispute is open.
  4. Contact the seller through the marketplace’s documented channel and state the exact mismatch: set symbol, collector number, rarity treatment, language, or condition.
  5. Use the platform’s return or buyer-protection process if the seller cannot resolve the discrepancy.
  6. For a valuable card or suspected counterfeit, obtain a specialist trading-card-shop evaluation and retain the written or photographed opinion.

A compact checklist for every purchase

  • Set symbol or expansion code copied exactly.
  • Full collector number recorded in XXX/YYY form.
  • Rarity mark interpreted with the correct expansion legend.
  • Holo, reverse-holo, illustration, or other treatment noted.
  • Language confirmed.
  • Promo or special printing marker checked.
  • Exact number and name matched in an expansion checklist.
  • Seller’s photographs show the actual front, back, and lower edge.
  • Condition assessed from those photographs.
  • Bright-light or specialist evaluation used only when the data or physical appearance remains suspicious.

Set symbols, layouts, and rarity labels can change as new expansions are released. Recheck a modern card against the current checklist for its own expansion rather than applying a legend from an older set.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
