Before paying for a PS5, check the seller, watch the console work, compare its on-screen serial number with the label, and ask for the original dated receipt. These checks reduce risk, but a serial number alone does not establish ownership, authenticity, or remaining warranty. Warranty details below are limited to Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC’s US/Canada terms; confirm the rules for your country before relying on them.
Check who is selling the PS5
Sony recommends buying new PlayStation products from authorized retailers, citing functionality, authenticity, return policy, and warranty coverage. That guidance does not establish that every listing on a marketplace is sold by an authorized retailer: check the specific seller’s identity, authorization, return terms, and warranty terms before ordering. Sony warns that unauthorized retailers or websites may fraudulently supply products through theft or fraud. Sony’s US buying guide also cautions that third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by warranty.
For a used-console listing
- Review the seller’s ratings and feedback, and confirm the account and listing details are consistent.
- Ask for a current video showing the console powering on, its buttons and ports, and its disc drive if applicable. The video should also show the console connecting to the internet.
- If you can meet in person, inspect the console and test image quality, power, and online connection. Look for damage, signs of overheating, broken seals, or a removed or damaged serial-number label.
- Ask the seller to deactivate the console and no longer retain access to it before the handoff.
Sony recommends these checks as ways to assess a used console, but they do not independently prove ownership, authenticity, or warranty eligibility. Sony’s used-console guidance recommends checking connection to PlayStation services to help determine whether a device is reported lost or stolen; a successful connection is a risk-screening check, not proof of clear title.
Find and compare the serial and model numbers
Ask the seller to show both the console’s system information and the physical label. Sony’s support instructions give this path on the PS5: Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The serial number is also printed on the underside of the console; with the console positioned vertically, remove the base if necessary to see it. The model number is printed on the underside too and begins with “CFI.” Sony’s serial and model number instructions describe where to find them, not a public lookup that verifies ownership, authenticity, or remaining warranty.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- Have the seller display the serial number in Console Information.
- Inspect the underside label and note the serial and CFI model number.
- Compare the on-screen serial with the physical label. If they differ, the label is unreadable, or the number appears altered or removed, pause the purchase and ask Sony support about the exact console.
Sony’s US/Canada warranty excludes products whose serial number has been altered, defaced, or removed. The warranty terms make an intact, legible label especially important; do not treat a seller’s explanation as confirmation of eligibility.
Verify what warranty, if any, comes with the console
Under the Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC warranty terms for the United States and Canada, PS5 hardware coverage lasts one year from the original purchase date and applies to the original purchaser. Sony requires valid proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale or retailer receipt showing the original purchase date, for warranty service. The warranty page also says coverage is the same whether or not the product is registered. Ask for the original dated retailer receipt and retain it; registration or a verbal assurance is not a substitute for the stated service documentation. Read Sony’s US/Canada PS5 warranty terms.

Distinguish third-party used from Sony Certified Refurbished
A third-party used PS5 and a PlayStation Certified Refurbished PS5 are not the same warranty category. Sony’s US buying guidance says third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered. Sony’s US Certified Refurbished page says those products include a standard one-year limited warranty and are tested to the same functional standards as new products. Confirm the exact unit’s status, applicable terms, and remaining coverage rather than inferring them from a listing title. Sony’s buying guide explains the used-product distinction, and PlayStation Direct’s Certified Refurbished page describes its program.

| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Seller | Named seller, reputation, authorization where claimed, and written return terms. Sony recommends authorized retailers for new products; authorization is not established merely by a marketplace listing. |
| Operation | Video or in-person demonstration of power-on, controls, ports, disc drive if applicable, and internet connection. |
| Serial and model | On-screen serial matches the underside label; CFI model number and serial label are readable and appear intact. |
| Warranty evidence | Original dated retailer receipt, original purchase date, warranty holder, and terms for the exact device and your location. |
| Product category | Third-party used versus PlayStation Certified Refurbished; do not assume the coverage is the same. |
| Handoff and recourse | Ability to inspect before payment, seller deactivation, and return options if the console does not match its description. |
Warranty rights and service requirements can vary by country. The cited duration and original-purchaser rule are Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC’s US/Canada terms, not a universal rule; check Sony’s warranty information for the market where the PS5 was originally sold and where you plan to seek service.
