Choose Steam Frame if you want Valve’s streaming-first headset design; choose a Meta Quest if you want the flexibility of wired Quest Link, wireless Air Link, and standalone Quest use. For Steam PC VR, a supported Quest can also stream through Valve’s Steam Link app. Official sources describe different features and requirements, but do not establish which option has lower latency or better image quality in a like-for-like test.
First, what do “Steam Frame,” “Quest Link,” and “Steam Link” mean?
Steam Frame is Valve’s headset, which Valve describes as “streaming-first.” Quest Link is Meta’s PC VR connection route for Quest headsets: it can use a cable or Air Link over Wi-Fi. Steam Link is a separate, free Valve app that streams Steam games from a PC to supported Quest headsets. A Quest owner can therefore use Steam Link for Steam VR streaming without using Meta’s Link or Air Link route.
Valve lists Steam Link support for Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. Its setup guidance calls for the PC to be wired to the router and the headset to use 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Valve’s Steam Remote Play requirements list Windows 10 or newer and an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better among the minimums.
What Steam Frame’s streaming design offers
Valve says Steam Frame includes a plug-and-play 6 GHz wireless adapter with two radios: one dedicated to audio and visual streaming and another for Wi-Fi. Its Multi-Link Streaming feature is designed to route data across available headset connections with redundancy. These are Valve’s descriptions of the design, not independent measurements of its performance.

Valve also describes Foveated Streaming, which uses low-latency eye tracking to direct detail toward the wearer’s gaze. The Steam Frame product page claims “over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth” from this feature. That is a Valve claim, not an independently verified result or a comparison with Quest Link.
Steam Frame also runs SteamOS and supports standalone play for a growing number of VR and non-VR games, according to Valve. This does not mean every Steam game runs on the headset without a PC.

How Quest PC VR connections differ
Quest Link by cable
Wired Quest Link connects a Quest headset to a PC by cable. Meta’s developer hardware guidance recommends a USB-C cable supporting 5 GB/s or higher and names the Meta Horizon Link Cable. That guidance is developer-oriented, not a complete consumer cable buying guide; check compatibility and data capability for your headset before choosing a cable.
Air Link over Wi-Fi
Air Link is Meta’s wireless PC VR route. Meta notes that network degradation can cause dropped frames and lag, so the quality of the local wireless connection matters. Meta’s documentation explains this risk but does not compare Air Link against Steam Frame under matching conditions.

Steam Link on Quest
If your main goal is to play Steam VR games wirelessly on a Quest, Valve’s Steam Link app is another option. Valve’s minimum requirements include a PC wired to the router and a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router. Meta’s app listing recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E, wired PC networking, 16 GB of RAM, and stronger GPU options. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular setup will stream smoothly.

Check your PC and network before choosing wireless streaming
For Steam Link on Quest, Valve’s documented minimums include Windows 10 or newer, an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router, and a wired PC-to-router connection. Meta’s Steam Link listing recommends Wi-Fi 6/6E, wired PC networking, 16 GB RAM, and stronger GPU options. A router upgrade can improve the conditions for wireless streaming, but specifications alone cannot predict the result in your home.

If you use Air Link, Meta identifies network degradation as a cause of lag and dropped frames. That makes local network conditions part of the decision—not just the headset and PC. Wired Quest Link avoids relying on Wi-Fi for the headset-to-PC connection, though it requires a suitable cable and a physical tether.

Valve’s product material describes Steam Frame’s streaming features, while Meta and Valve document Quest’s Link, Air Link, and Steam Link options. Those sources do not provide an independent, apples-to-apples comparison of Steam Frame and Quest for latency, image quality, or reliability. There is no sound basis here for declaring a measured performance winner.

Steam Frame’s case rests on Valve’s stated streaming-first design and features. Quest’s case is connection choice: wired Link, wireless Air Link, and Steam Link for Steam streaming, alongside Quest’s standalone use. Decide based on which connection and ecosystem match your use, rather than treating a feature description as proof of superior performance.
