To reduce the risk of buying an unlicensed anime figure, verify the exact product with its manufacturer, check the seller against current authorized-retailer information, and compare the actual figure and packaging with official details. No single sticker, photograph, or low price can authenticate every figure: markings and packaging vary by maker, product, release, and region.
1. Identify the exact product and compare it with the maker’s listing
Start with the manufacturer’s official product page—not just the marketplace listing. Match the product name, manufacturer, edition, release information, figure, accessories, and box design. A listing that uses official promotional images still does not prove that the item the seller will ship is genuine.
When practical, ask for current photos of the specific item and its packaging. Compare those photos with the manufacturer’s information, looking for differences in included parts, product names, logos, or packaging. Treat any mismatch as a reason to investigate, not as proof by itself.
2. Check who is selling it and where they are listed
Look up the seller’s full business identity, not only its storefront name. Check its return terms and whether the manufacturer lists it as an official shop or partner for your country. Good Smile Company recommends buying through its online store or partner shops; its FAQ also directs customers to official partner shops and distributor information (Good Smile Company’s bootleg guidance; Good Smile Company’s FAQ).

A seller’s presence on a marketplace is not, by itself, evidence that the manufacturer authorizes it. For a secondhand listing, where the original seller may no longer be involved, ask for photos of the actual figure and box and consider whether the seller provides clear identity and return information.
3. Inspect the actual packaging and figure for multiple warning signs
Compare the item in hand—or clear, current seller photos—with the maker’s product information. Check package text and logos, the stated character and series, expected parts, and any copyright or distributor information. Some makers identify which marks should appear on their products; an absent expected mark can be concerning, but a mark’s presence does not by itself prove authenticity.

TAMASHII NATIONS lists several warning signs for its own products: missing expected logos or authenticity marks, unnatural Japanese or inconsistent fonts, missing character or series names, unexpected option parts, and products appearing before its official product information. It also advises caution when a seller hides its identity or asks buyers to make contact privately. These are brand-specific reasons to pause and investigate, not a general authentication checklist for every anime figure (TAMASHII NATIONS: Warning About Counterfeit Goods).
- Price: A price substantially below the usual price is a reason to scrutinize the listing, not conclusive proof that the figure is counterfeit.
- Text and marks: Compare them with the maker’s information for the exact product. Do not assume every legitimate product should have the same sticker or logo.
- Parts and timing: Check that the accessories and release details fit the official product information; an implausibly early listing deserves extra caution.
4. Apply sticker rules only to the maker and product they cover
There is no universal anime-figure sticker test. Good Smile says some products have a license sticker, some have a printed label, and some have no sticker; designs can also vary by release and distribution region. Its FAQ says most figures have a package sticker on the bottom-back naming or showing the local distributor, but “most” is not “all.” Use the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact item rather than treating a missing or present sticker as a verdict (Good Smile Company’s bootleg guidance; Good Smile Company’s FAQ).

TAMASHII NATIONS describes its own packaging marks: products have carried a TAMASHII NATIONS QUALITY seal since 2023, with some exceptions; products released from 2018 to 2023 used hologram seals. These details apply to the brand and release periods specified by the company, not to figures made by other companies. See its counterfeit warning and brand overview for the relevant guidance.
5. Contact the manufacturer when you still cannot tell
Manufacturer guidance is most useful when you can provide evidence about the item itself. Good Smile says it cannot check an online purchase before you buy it if you do not possess the product. If you already have the item, its support team requests:

Good Smile cautions that it may be unable to assess authenticity if the information is insufficient. Its support guidance, updated March 11, 2025, also says bootlegs are unlicensed products and are not eligible for Good Smile customer support or its guarantee (Good Smile Company: Bootleg information).

These checks help you spot inconsistencies and choose a lower-risk seller, but online photos and isolated packaging details cannot guarantee that the item shipped will match the listing or authenticate every maker’s product. Manufacturers also work with rights holders and authorities against counterfeit markets and websites, but those efforts do not verify a particular listing (Bandai Namco Holdings: Protection of IP).
