How to Verify an ICE Officer’s Identity and Check an Immigration Warrant

Ask for the officer’s name, ID number and agency, then check who issued and signed the document, who it names and what action it authorizes. Administrative ICE warrants and judicial warrants are different, and home-entry guidance is contested.

Ask the officer for their name, identification number and agency, and request to see their official identification and the document they say authorizes their action. Check who issued and signed the document, whom it names, and what it authorizes. An ICE administrative warrant is not the same as a judicial warrant—and guidance about whether an administrative warrant can be used to enter a home is now contested.

Ask who the officers are and what document they are relying on

Massachusetts Attorney General guidance dated February 7, 2025 recommends asking officers for their name, identification number and agency, and asking whether they have a judicial warrant or court order. You can request to inspect their badge or official identification and a copy of the document they say authorizes their action. This is state guidance, not a published ICE-wide authentication protocol.

Where safe and practical, you can examine a document without opening the door or allowing entry just to see it. Do not rely on a uniform, badge, seal or document title alone to determine what the officers may do. Note names and identifying details if it is safe to do so. If you cannot tell who issued a document or what it covers, contact a qualified immigration lawyer or legal-aid organization promptly.

Check the issuer, signature, person and scope

Start with the heading and signature, then read the document for the named person, location, date and stated purpose. The key distinction is whether the document is an administrative immigration warrant or a judicial warrant issued by a court.

Check ICE administrative warrant Judicial warrant
Issuer and signature Issued and signed by an authorized immigration officer. ICE’s sample Form I-200, revised September 2016, has signature fields for an authorized immigration officer. A court document. Check which court issued it and look for a judicial signature.
Document and stated authority Forms I-200 and I-205 are administrative immigration forms. The sample I-200 is titled “Warrant for Arrest of Alien” and commands an immigration officer to arrest and take the named person into custody for removal proceedings. Read the document itself to see what action the court authorized; do not infer search or entry authority from the word “warrant” alone.
Person and location Check whom it names and the action it describes. An I-200 sample names a person and directs an arrest; it is not a court-issued warrant. Check the person or place it covers, the date and the limits stated in the document.
Home entry Massachusetts Attorney General guidance dated May 29, 2025 says I-200 and I-205 administrative warrants do not authorize entry into a home or private space without consent. A reported internal ICE memo creates a significant qualification; see the next section. Whether a particular court document authorizes entry depends on its terms and circumstances. Get legal advice if the scope is unclear.

ICE’s sample Form I-200 is an example of an administrative arrest warrant, not proof that every document presented in an encounter is genuine or applies to the person or place in question.

Understand the dispute over administrative warrants and home entry

There is an important conflict in the available guidance. Massachusetts Attorney General guidance dated May 29, 2025 says ICE administrative warrants, including Forms I-200 and I-205, do not authorize entry into a home or private space without consent. But an Associated Press report published January 21, 2026 described an internal ICE memorandum dated May 12, 2025 that asserted officers could forcibly enter the home of a person with a final removal order using an I-205 administrative warrant.

The AP report is reporting about an internal memo, not a public regulation or court ruling. The memo itself was not available as a primary source, and the legal resolution and scope of the reported position are not established here. Do not treat the reported position as judicially upheld, or the older state guidance as an uncontested account of current practice. If officers seek entry or you are unsure what a document permits, seek prompt advice from a qualified lawyer. Do not put yourself or anyone else at risk to inspect or challenge a document.

Find counsel, confirm case information or locate someone in custody

Contact ICE about a case

ICE says a legal representative who does not know the client’s deportation officer should contact the relevant field office or facility. ICE requires a Form G-28 to be on file before it discloses protected case information to a representative. Use ICE’s official field-office directory for contact details.

Search the detainee locator

ICE’s Online Detainee Locator System searches for people currently in ICE custody and people held by Customs and Border Protection for more than 48 hours. For a name search, enter the exact first and last name. For an A-number search, enter nine digits; add leading zeros to a shorter number and select the correct country of birth.

Know what a detainer is

An ICE detainer is a request to another custodial agency, not a court warrant. ICE’s detainer page lists 877-246-8253 as the Joint Intake Center number for complaints about detainers or civil-rights and civil-liberties violations connected to DHS activity.
