An inswinging yorker is a very full cricket delivery that pitches near the batter’s feet or the base of the stumps and moves inward toward the batter through the air. “Yorker” describes the ball’s length and target; “inswinging” describes its movement before it pitches. A regular yorker can also swing—or show little obvious movement—because “regular yorker” is informal shorthand, not a separate type of delivery.
What makes a delivery a yorker?
A yorker is bowled very full, so it pitches around the batter’s toes, popping crease, or the base of the stumps. The exact line can vary: a bowler might target the feet or stumps, or aim wide of off stump. The Australian Cricket Institute describes the yorker as a ball bowled “around the toes” and discusses those different lines in its coaching guide.
Line and length are separate details. Length describes where the ball pitches; line describes its direction across the pitch relative to the batter and stumps. The ECB’s account of Chris Jordan’s practice distinguishes wide, straight, and leg-stump yorker targets, illustrating that a yorker need not be aimed at just one spot (ECB, 2 September 2016).
What does “inswinging” mean?
Swing is movement through the air before the ball pitches. An inswinging ball moves toward the striker. The direction should be described relative to the batter, not as always left or right: the apparent direction changes with the batter’s handedness and the viewer’s viewpoint. The ECB’s explanation of swing bowling discusses seam presentation and plans in relation to right- and left-handed batters (ECB, 8 March 2024).

How it differs from a “regular” yorker
“Regular yorker” is an informal way to refer to a yorker without specifying a swing variation. It does not mean the delivery must travel straight. The useful distinction is:

| Term | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Yorker | A very full length, usually aimed around the batter’s toes or the base of the stumps. |
| Inswinging | Movement in flight toward the batter. |
| Inswinging yorker | A yorker-length delivery that moves inward toward the batter before pitching. |
| “Regular” yorker | Informal shorthand for a yorker whose swing is not specified; it may still move in the air. |
Why the combination can trouble a batter
A yorker at the feet or base of the stumps gives the batter little time to bring the bat down accurately. Inward movement adds another adjustment: the batter has to account for the ball’s path as it approaches a very full target. The delivery can threaten the stumps or pads, but it is not automatically unplayable or a guaranteed wicket. In an ICC report, Wasim Akram described the yorker’s purpose as pitching at the base and preventing a batter from driving straight (ICC, 19 January 2019).
Why yorkers are difficult to execute
The bowler has to land the ball at a precise, very full length while controlling its line. A ball that lands short can become a hittable half-volley; a miss on the other side can turn into a full toss. The Australian Cricket Institute advises bowlers to err on the full side when they miss, arguing that a low full toss is harder to hit than a half-volley. That is coaching advice, not a guarantee about what will happen in every delivery (Australian Cricket Institute, 2017).

Practice ideas from professional and coaching accounts
Chris Jordan’s ECB feature describes a drill with distinct targets for wide, straight, and leg-stump yorkers. Jordan said he aimed to land about six yorkers and three slower balls in a nine-ball high-intensity drill; that is his individual practice target, not a general accuracy benchmark. Coach Ottis Gibson sometimes changed the target as Jordan gathered to simulate a batter moving in the crease (ECB, 2 September 2016).
In a BCCI interview, Umesh Yadav recalled Wasim Akram advising him to focus on the intended pitching spot, body alignment, and follow-through. Yadav also discussed wrist position and release alignment in relation to controlling swing (BCCI interview). These are attributed coaching perspectives, not a single technique prescribed for every bowler. For a beginner, a sensible progression is to practise landing on a chosen marker consistently, then add swing as a separate challenge.
