Steam compares the installed files with its expected versions and can replace files it finds incorrect. If verification does not resolve the problem, the next step depends on whether the issue is with installed files, Steam’s download cache, the library folder, or the content server.
Verify the game’s installed files
Steam recommends restarting your computer and launching Steam before you begin. The menu labels below reflect Steam’s current support guidance; labels can vary as the client changes.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game. Alternatively, open its Library page.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
Let the process finish; it may take several minutes. Avoid running it while other intensive tasks, such as a virus scan or defragmentation, are underway, and verify only one game at a time. Steam’s verification instructions explain that the check can repair files when necessary.
Understand the verification result
A notice that one or more files failed verification does not necessarily mean the repair failed. Steam says, “This is normal for most Steam games.” Some games have local configuration files that differ from Steam’s expected files and should not be replaced; Steam says those files can safely be ignored. Steam Support’s verification page does not provide a success-rate statistic, so a failed-file count alone is not a measure of whether the game is repaired.

If verification does not fix the problem
Different Steam troubleshooting steps address different parts of the process. Use the symptom to choose what to try next rather than treating these options as interchangeable.

Steam’s Update & Installation Issues guide recommends a sequence that includes restarting the computer, clearing the download cache, repairing the library folder, verifying local files, and trying a different download region. If you suspect a slow or unreliable download rather than a damaged installation, clearing the cache or testing another region targets that part of the process.

Steam divides its content system into geographical regions. A region’s servers may be slow, overloaded, or experiencing hardware failure, so trying another relatively nearby region can help determine whether the problem is specific to the current one. See Steam’s content server guidance.

Repeated corruption can have causes beyond the game installation. Steam lists hardware problems, software crashes, and power surges as possible causes; its broader installation guidance also identifies overclocking, connection issues, storage errors, and memory errors as possibilities. These are troubleshooting leads, not proof that a particular component is failing. A recurring problem by itself does not establish that your drive needs replacement; Steam advises contacting technical support to investigate hard-drive issues. Steam’s installation troubleshooting guidance does not diagnose an individual computer.

If Steam reports a missing executable
Steam says another program may be blocking a file, or the file may be corrupted or may not have downloaded successfully. Check whether antivirus software quarantined or interfered with the file before repeating verification. If the issue persists after the recommended steps, Steam’s missing-executable guidance recommends submitting a support ticket with an uncropped screenshot of the error and a system report.
