To see how a classic game’s original buttons map to your controller, open its Suspend Menu. Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Virtual Boy games also offer per-game control changes there; for the other Nintendo Classics libraries, change button mappings in Switch 2 system settings instead. Nintendo calls these collections Nintendo Classics, rather than “Console Archive.”
How to open the Suspend Menu
Start the game, then use the input for its library below. The shortcut can differ when you use a classic controller accessory. If Show controls in game is enabled in Settings, Nintendo says the Suspend Menu shortcut appears at the bottom of the screen.

How to see the original controls
The Suspend Menu’s control display shows how the original system’s buttons correspond to the buttons on your current controller. Which option to choose depends on the library:
#1 Best Overall
- HD Rumble 2
- Motion controls
- Built-in amiibo functionality*
- Capture Button
- C Button for GameChat**
- Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Virtual Boy: select View/Change Controls, then press Y to see the original-to-current button mapping. Press X to see additional controls specific to that game.
- NES, SNES, Game Boy, SEGA Genesis, and Game Boy Advance: press X to open the User Guide and view the original-to-current mapping.
Nintendo’s guide covers NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, and Virtual Boy. The GameCube library is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
Can controls be changed for each classic game?
Yes, but Nintendo documents an in-game, per-game control-changing option only for Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Virtual Boy. In those libraries, open the Suspend Menu, choose View/Change Controls, and select Change Controls. The customized mapping is for that game and controller combination.

- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
For the other libraries listed above, the User Guide displays the mapping, but Nintendo directs players to system settings to change it. That system remapping is a controller configuration with broad console-wide effects, not a separate setting for one classic game.
How to remap a controller in Switch 2 settings
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Accessibility > Button Mapping.
- Select a connected controller and choose Edit Controller Mapping.
- Select the button to change, then select the button you want it to perform.
- Save the configuration. To undo it later, return to Button Mapping and choose Reset Controller Mapping.
You can also add Button Mapping to Quick Settings, which opens when you hold HOME. On the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, the GL and GR buttons can be mapped only through Quick Settings while a game is running.

- Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 accessibility features guide lists Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, and Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controller among the supported options. Only controllers currently connected appear in the list. Nintendo’s separate Button Mapping FAQ also says Nintendo Switch Lite buttons can be remapped. A Switch 2 Pro Controller is optional; remapping does not require buying one.
What system-level remapping changes—and what it cannot change
Nintendo says a custom configuration applies in nearly all console scenarios, including games, the eShop, the HOME Menu, and Maintenance Mode. Configurations are stored on the console, not on the controller. You can save up to five custom configurations per supported controller; each controller needs its own configuration, although a saved configuration can be loaded onto another controller of the same type.

Which Nintendo Classics libraries require a membership?
Nintendo’s guide says an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for the NES, SNES, and Game Boy libraries it lists. The Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Virtual Boy, and mature Nintendo 64 libraries require the Expansion Pack.
