To vocalize in Left 4 Dead 2, open the in-game communication or vocalizer radial menu and choose a preset survivor response. Check your controls to find the key assigned to that menu; do not assume a particular key. This works without a microphone, and it is separate from speaking to teammates through voice chat.
Use the in-game vocalizer menu

In a game, press and hold the assigned key to open the radial menu. Choose the response you want using the menu controls.

Release the menu input to select the highlighted response. The survivor delivers a preset line or reaction.

The exact binding can depend on your control settings. If the menu does not appear, check the controls again and make sure you are using the assigned communication or vocalizer key.
Character vocalizations and microphone chat are different
A vocalization is a line spoken by your survivor from the game’s available responses. Live voice chat sends your own speech to other players through a microphone. You do not need a microphone or headset to use the character vocalizer.

Can you bind an individual vocalization to a key?
Older instructions sometimes show console commands such as bind "v" "vocalize PlayerDeath". Community reports say direct binding of individual vocalize commands was restricted in Left 4 Dead 2, so those examples should not be treated as a dependable current method. A 2013 Steam Community thread includes a correction about the restriction, and a 2020 reply recommends a custom vocalizer menu instead: Steam Community: “How to bind the voice commands?”. An older 2012 discussion also shows why conflicting advice persists: Steam Community: “How do I bind Voice commands to keys?”.
Some responses cannot be manually started
Even with the built-in menu, not every spoken response is necessarily available for manual triggering. Valve’s February 18, 2021 update note says it would “Prevent manually initiating some talker responses that trigger longer conversations.” The note does not specify every affected response or provide a complete list of restrictions. Custom vocalizer menus are optional mods
If you want more or differently arranged choices, a community add-on may offer custom radial menus. These are not an official game feature, and compatibility can depend on where you play. The GameBanana Custom Vocalizer Menu listing describes four radial menus and says the add-on is intended for local and custom servers; it may not work on Valve dedicated servers. Treat that as the listing’s compatibility guidance, not a guarantee for every setup.
