For a first, story-focused watch, follow Dragon Ball, then choose either Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai, continue with Dragon Ball Super, watch Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, and then watch Dragon Ball Daima. Treat Dragon Ball GT as an optional alternate-continuity branch after Z. This route introduces the characters, story stakes and transformations in a way that avoids watching the same material twice.
The transformation sequence in the main Z-to-Super continuity is Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue, Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken, Ultra Instinct Sign and perfected Ultra Instinct. Super Saiyan 4 belongs to GT and should remain in that separate branch.

The recommended Dragon Ball story order
Use this order if you want the cleanest first experience rather than a release-history experiment:
- Dragon Ball — Goku’s childhood, the original Dragon Balls and the core cast.
- Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai — one presentation of the Z-era story.
- Dragon Ball Super — the continuation after the Z-era ending. Toei’s official episode listing runs through episode 131.
- Dragon Ball Super: Broly — watch after the Super television story for a straightforward first pass.
- Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO — the later Super-era film.
- Dragon Ball Daima — a later original anime work listed in the franchise’s official chronology.
- Dragon Ball GT (optional) — a separate continuity branch that can be watched after Z.
A current GamesRadar+ guide counted more than 600 episodes and 24 movies across six main series in 2026. That is a guide-published count, not a permanent total; it can change as new releases appear.

| 3 | Dragon Ball Super | God-powered transformations, new universes and the Universe Survival Saga. |
| 4 | Super: Broly | A Super-era film placed after the television story for first-time viewers. |
| 5 | Super: SUPER HERO | A later Super-era film that follows Broly in this practical route. |

| 7 | Dragon Ball GT (optional) | An alternate branch with its own ending and Super Saiyan 4. |
Why Dragon Ball must come first
Dragon Ball is not a prequel you can safely skip. It establishes Goku as a child, explains how the Dragon Balls work and introduces the friends, mentors and rivals whose relationships give the later battles meaning. It also shows the martial-arts foundation that makes the power increases in Z understandable.
Starting with Z gives you a faster route to alien invasions and Super Saiyan battles, but it removes the context for why characters such as Bulma, Krillin, Master Roshi and Piccolo matter. If your priority is the complete story rather than the shortest route to the famous transformations, begin with the original series.
Choosing Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai
You only need one complete Z-era presentation on a first watch. Dragon Ball Z is the original broadcast version, with its original pacing and presentation. Dragon Ball Kai is a recut route designed to move more tightly through the core story. Watching both in full is optional comparison viewing, not a requirement for understanding Super.

| Consideration | Dragon Ball Z | Dragon Ball Kai |
|---|---|---|
| Pacing | Preserves the original broadcast rhythm, including slower stretches. | Recut for a tighter route through the central story. |
| Filler tolerance | Includes more material outside the core manga-adapted narrative. | Generally preferred by viewers who want the core narrative with less detour. |
| Presentation | Original broadcast-era timing, music and voice-track options vary by release. | Revised presentation; exact music and cast depend on the edition and language. |
| Best fit | Viewers who want the historical broadcast experience. | Viewers who want a more efficient first run. |
| Availability | Catalogs differ by country and change over time, so check the legal service available in your region. | |
The key story milestones are the same route either way: the Saiyan conflict, the Frieza-era climax, the Cell material and the Majin Buu conflict. Choose based on pacing, preferred dub or subtitles, music and the specific release you can legally access.
Continue with Dragon Ball Super
Dragon Ball Super follows the Z-era story and is the required next stop for the modern god-level transformations. Toei’s official listing ends at episode 131, covering the television anime’s complete released run.

Super introduces a larger cosmology and reframes power as more than a sequence of numbered Super Saiyan stages. Divine energy, technique and control become as important as raw strength. That distinction matters when Ultra Instinct appears: it is not simply “Super Saiyan 5,” but a separate technique and state.
Where the Super films fit
For a first viewing, place Dragon Ball Super: Broly after the Super television series, followed by Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO. This order preserves the television show’s introduction of the modern forms and avoids interrupting its progression with film retellings.

A viewer pursuing strict in-universe chronology can build a film-by-film timeline, but that approach may move you between television episodes and movies that revisit or reframe similar events. The practical order above is easier to follow and keeps the major transformations in their introduction sequence.
Where Dragon Ball Daima and GT belong
Dragon Ball Daima
Dragon Ball Daima is a later original anime work listed in the official Dragon Ball chronology. Put it after the two Super films in the simple first-watch route. Because its placement and relationship to other entries can prompt chronology debates, use the official chronology as the reference point rather than trying to infer placement from isolated cameos or visual callbacks.
Dragon Ball GT
Dragon Ball GT is an optional branch after Z. It is not required to understand Super, and its events should not be inserted into the Super transformation sequence. Watch it after completing Z or Kai if you want a separate continuation with its own premise, conflicts and conclusion.

GT’s defining transformation is Super Saiyan 4. Keeping it in the GT branch prevents a common mistake: treating every transformation shown in the franchise as if it occurred in one uninterrupted continuity.

Saiyan transformation order in the main continuity
The list below follows the Z-to-Super route. Names can vary between subtitles, dubs, games and merchandise, especially for the Blue form, but the sequence and distinctions remain useful.
| Order | Form or state | Where to watch for it | What to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Super Saiyan | Dragon Ball Z, Frieza-era climax | The first major Super Saiyan breakthrough in the main story. |
| 2 | Super Saiyan 2 | Dragon Ball Z, Cell and later Z material | A further transformation developed and showcased during the Cell-era escalation and beyond. |
| 3 | Super Saiyan 3 | Dragon Ball Z, Majin Buu conflict | The form Goku displays in his battle with Majin Buu. |
| 4 | Super Saiyan God | Battle of Gods material at the start of Super | Introduces divine power and changes how later forms are understood. |
| 5 | Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Super Saiyan Blue) | Dragon Ball Super | A Super Saiyan transformation using Super Saiyan God power. |
| 6 | Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken | Universe Survival Saga | Goku layers Kaioken over Blue; the red aura appears over Blue’s blue aura. |
| 7 | Ultra Instinct Sign | Universe Survival Saga | An incomplete Ultra Instinct state that cannot be held for long. |
| 8 | Perfected or complete Ultra Instinct | Later stages of the same broad tournament storyline | A more complete mastery of the Ultra Instinct technique. |
| Separate branch | Super Saiyan 4 | Dragon Ball GT | A defining GT transformation; do not place it between Blue and Ultra Instinct. |
1. Super Saiyan
The first Super Saiyan transformation appears at the climax of the Frieza-era story in Z. It is the threshold that changes the scale of the series: the legendary form moves from rumor to reality, and later arcs build on its cost, control and escalating versions.
2. Super Saiyan 2
Super Saiyan 2 is developed and showcased during the Cell material and remains relevant in later Z events. It is a distinct transformation, not merely a different hairstyle or a renamed Super Saiyan power-up.
3. Super Saiyan 3
Goku first uses Super Saiyan 3 during the Majin Buu conflict. The form’s debut belongs to late Z, so watching the earlier arcs in order makes its arrival carry the intended sense of escalation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Super Saiyan God
Super Saiyan God begins the Super-era transformation shift. The Battle of Gods material introduces divine power, which becomes the foundation for the Blue form and the later emphasis on technique and control.
5. Super Saiyan Blue
Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan Blue are two names for the same form. The Dragon Ball Official Site described it in 2022 as the form produced when a Super Saiyan God turns Super Saiyan, identifying the blue-haired, blue-eyed appearance as Super Saiyan Blue. If subtitles use the longer name and a dub uses Blue, you have not encountered two different stages.
6. Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken
During the Universe Survival Saga, Goku combines Kaioken with Blue. The official feature describes the visual as a red aura layered over Blue’s blue aura. Because Kaioken is being combined with an existing form, treat this as a technique-enhanced state rather than a permanently numbered Super Saiyan tier.
7. Ultra Instinct Sign
Ultra Instinct Sign is an incomplete version of the gods’ Ultra Instinct technique. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s 2022 feature says it cannot be held for long and describes its blue-white aura. It is therefore best understood as an unstable state of a technique, not another Super Saiyan number.
8. Perfected or complete Ultra Instinct
Later in the same broad tournament storyline, Goku reaches a more complete mastery of Ultra Instinct. The terminology varies by release, so “Perfected Ultra Instinct” and “complete Ultra Instinct” may appear as labels for the mastered state.

Super Saiyan 4 in GT
Super Saiyan 4 is central to GT but outside the Super sequence. Place it only after choosing GT as the alternate branch. Mixing it into the Z-to-Super list makes the continuity look contradictory when the difference is actually intentional.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Three practical ways to watch
Story-first route
- Watch Dragon Ball.
- Choose Kai for a tighter Z route or Z for the original broadcast experience.
- Watch all 131 episodes of Super.
- Watch Super: Broly, then Super: SUPER HERO.
- Watch Daima.
This is the recommended route for a new viewer who wants one coherent progression.
Completionist route
- Complete Dragon Ball and one Z presentation.
- Watch Super and both modern Super films.
- Add Daima.
- Return to the beginning of the Z era and watch the other presentation for comparison, if desired.
- Watch GT as a separate branch.
Watching both Z and Kai is best treated as a comparison of editing, voice tracks, music and pacing, not as two required chapters of the plot.
Transformation-focused route
- Watch Dragon Ball first so the cast and rules are familiar.
- Use Z or Kai through the Frieza material for Super Saiyan.
- Continue through Cell for Super Saiyan 2.
- Continue through Majin Buu for Super Saiyan 3.
- Watch Super for God, Blue, Blue Kaioken and Ultra Instinct.
- Watch GT separately for Super Saiyan 4.
This route keeps the first appearances in order without asking you to interrupt the main continuity for optional material.
Common watch-order mistakes
- Starting with Super: You will recognize the transformations but miss the original relationships and rules established in Dragon Ball and Z.
- Watching Z and Kai back-to-back as if both were necessary: They are two presentations of the Z-era route; one is enough for a first run.
- Putting GT between Z and Super: GT is an optional alternate branch, not a prerequisite for Super.
- Calling Blue and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan different forms: They are equivalent names for the same Blue transformation.
- Calling Ultra Instinct a numbered Super Saiyan form: Ultra Instinct is a technique and state, with Sign representing an incomplete stage.
- Inserting Super Saiyan 4 into the Super sequence: Keep it in GT’s continuity.
- Assuming a streaming catalog is universal: Legal availability changes by country and over time; verify the current catalog where you live.
How to handle different names across releases
Subtitles, dubs, games and merchandise do not always use identical labels. The most important naming difference is “Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan” versus “Super Saiyan Blue.” Use the character’s description and visual design, not the length of the translated name, to determine whether a release is referring to the same form.
For Ultra Instinct, “Sign,” “Omen” and similar labels can reflect translation choices for the incomplete state. The practical distinction is whether the story presents an unstable, incomplete technique or the later perfected mastery.
Bottom line for a first-time viewer
Watch Dragon Ball, then either Dragon Ball Kai or Dragon Ball Z, followed by Dragon Ball Super, Super: Broly, Super: SUPER HERO and Dragon Ball Daima. Add Dragon Ball GT afterward only as a separate continuity. In that main route, the forms progress from Super Saiyan through Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue, Blue Kaioken and Ultra Instinct; Super Saiyan 4 remains exclusive to the GT branch.
