HBO describes House of the Dragon as being set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. That is the relevant timeline fact for choosing a viewing order: the prequel depicts an earlier period in the history of House Targaryen, while Game of Thrones follows the later era.

The 200-year figure is HBO’s broad series-level placement. It should not be treated as a calculation that tells you exactly when each episode begins or ends, or as proof that an individual scene can be placed at a precise interval before a scene in the other show.
The source material is related, but the shows are separate series
HBO identifies George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood as the source book for House of the Dragon. The book is optional background reading; you do not need to read it to understand the television series or to follow the chronological order.
How to follow the order without getting lost
1. Finish each prequel season before changing shows
- Open House of the Dragon and select season 1.
- Play every season 1 episode in the platform’s displayed order.
- Move to season 2 only after season 1 is complete.
- After season 2, watch all of season 3 before opening Game of Thrones.
Season-level viewing preserves the way each show introduces its characters, political factions and historical context. It also avoids relying on fan-created episode lists whose assumptions may differ.

Once the third season of House of the Dragon is finished, begin Game of Thrones with season 1, episode 1. From that point, use the show’s normal season progression through season 8. There is no need to alternate between series, restart an earlier season or consult a mixed chronology chart.
3. Keep a simple progress record
Because the complete run spans 11 seasons, a checklist prevents accidentally skipping a season or switching to a different suggested order:

What “timeline order” does and does not promise
It gives you the broad historical sequence
Chronological viewing puts the Targaryen-focused story first and the later political and dynastic story second. This can make the world feel like one long historical arc: you encounter the earlier period before the events that occur centuries afterward.
It does not provide an episode-level calendar
The official material used for this guide does not publish exact start and end dates for every episode, nor does it give a cross-series list that tells viewers to watch a particular episode of one show between two episodes of the other. Any list claiming that level of precision should be treated as an interpretation rather than an official viewing instruction.
It cannot remove every spoiler
Watching the prequel first changes which information you encounter before Game of Thrones. Some historical context, names and references may carry different weight when you already know the earlier story. That is a consequence of choosing chronology, not an error in the order. If you want the experience audiences originally had, use release order instead.

Where to watch in the United States
HBO Max catalog information
As of October 13, 2026, HBO Max’s U.S. help information lists House of the Dragon seasons 1 and 2 and all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. The same information records that House of the Dragon season 3 premiered on June 21, 2026.

Weekly release detail for season 3
HBO announced season 3 of House of the Dragon as an eight-episode season released weekly, with an announced finale date of August 9, 2026. If you watched during the original rollout, the season was not available as a complete batch on its premiere date; a viewer starting after the finale can watch the episodes consecutively if the catalog still carries them.
Availability outside the United States
The catalog information above is U.S.-specific. Rights, subscription tiers and release timing can differ in other countries, and a title can leave a service without the show’s episode order changing. Use the local service listing for your region and verify that all three prequel seasons and all eight original-series seasons are available before starting.
Should you read Fire & Blood first?
No. Reading Fire & Blood is an optional companion activity, not a prerequisite for chronological viewing. HBO names it as the source for House of the Dragon, so it can provide additional historical context for readers who want it, but the television series is designed to be watched on its own.

If you do read the book, decide whether you want to finish the relevant material before watching the prequel or read alongside it. A book-first approach can reveal information before the adaptation presents it on screen, while a show-first approach lets you encounter the television version without bringing in details from the source text. Neither choice changes the season order.

Trying to alternate episodes
There is no official mixed episode order in the available HBO descriptions. Alternating episodes can create unnecessary confusion about which period you are watching and may expose you to references before the relevant season has established them. Stay with one show until its current season is complete.
Stopping after season 2 of the prequel
Season 3 is part of the chronological sequence. Since it premiered in 2026, older watch lists may omit it. Use the current three-season prequel sequence before starting Game of Thrones.
Assuming the 200-year statement supplies exact dates
The “200 years” description communicates relative placement between the series. It is not an episode calendar. Do not use it to manufacture a day-by-day or scene-by-scene order that the official material does not publish.

Confusing historical chronology with production chronology
Game of Thrones was released first, even though its story occurs later. A release-order list is not wrong; it answers a different question. Choose chronology when you want the fictional history first, and choose release order when you want the original audience experience.

Assuming availability is permanent
A service’s catalog can change by country and date. Check the current listing immediately before you begin, especially for season 3 of House of the Dragon and for access outside the United States.

- Decide whether your priority is fictional chronology or release-order discovery.
- If you choose chronology, queue House of the Dragon seasons 1, 2 and 3 in that order.
- Verify that the platform offers the seasons you need in your country.

The main cost is that you give up the information flow designed by the original release sequence. References that were once introductions may feel familiar, and later-set events are viewed after you have spent much longer with the earlier period. For a clean, spoiler-conscious plan, commit to one order before beginning and avoid switching halfway through. The season sequence is stable even when a streaming service’s catalog, interface or regional rights change.
