Place the two SG-1 continuation films—The Ark of Truth and then Continuum—after SG-1 season 10, finish Atlantis seasons 4–5, and end with Stargate Universe seasons 1–2.
This is the most practical season-level chronology for a first complete watch. Because episodes of SG-1 and Atlantis overlap, no single season-block list can place every episode perfectly. Viewers who want exact timing can use an episode-by-episode broadcast guide; everyone else can follow the sequence below without losing the franchise’s major continuity.

The core chronological watch order
The list below covers the connected live-action storyline in the order its events broadly occur. The middle entries are paired because the two television series ran concurrently.

Why the order begins with the 1994 film
Stargate establishes the central device, the mythology of the gate network and the premise that makes the television universe possible. SG-1 follows the film’s setup rather than retelling it, so starting with the movie gives the first television season its intended context.
The film and the series are related but not identical productions. The television story develops its own characters, terminology and long-running conflicts. Treat the movie as the opening chapter, then move directly to SG-1 seasons 1–7.
Watch SG-1 seasons 1–7 as one opening block
There is no need to interleave another series during the first seven seasons. This is the uninterrupted foundation of the franchise’s television continuity, introducing the team, recurring allies and the threats that later motivate the expansion into Atlantis.

What to do
- Watch all of SG-1 seasons 1–7 in episode order.
- Leave each two-part finale or continuing story intact.
- Do not insert Atlantis before its first season; its premise grows out of developments in SG-1.
How to handle the overlapping SG-1 and Atlantis years
Stargate: Atlantis begins while SG-1 is still running. The shows share setting, references and crossover context, so finishing every remaining SG-1 episode before starting Atlantis is easy but not fully chronological.
| Chronology block | Shows to watch | Practical method | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| First overlap | SG-1 season 8 and Atlantis season 1 | Alternate by episode using a broadcast-order guide, or complete one season at a time while keeping each series’ multi-part stories together. | Introduces the parallel expedition and preserves early crossover context. |
| Second overlap | SG-1 season 9 and Atlantis season 2 | Continue alternating in broadcast or season chronology. | The series now refer to a shared, expanding storyline. |
| Third overlap | SG-1 season 10 and Atlantis season 3 | Use the same approach; never split a two-parter across shows. | Finishes the original SG-1 television run while Atlantis continues. |
Option A: exact or near-exact episode order
Use a specialist episode guide that follows broadcast order and groups two-part or otherwise connected stories. GateWorld’s 2024 “Optimized Stargate Watch Order” is designed for this approach and also offers a downloadable guide. It prioritizes the original airing sequence while avoiding an awkward break inside a multi-episode storyline.
This option gives the best continuity accuracy. The trade-off is frequent switching: you may watch several episodes of one show, then move to the other, and the ideal transition point can be less satisfying than finishing a season.
Option B: season-block order
For a simpler first watch, treat each pair as a block: watch SG-1 season 8 and Atlantis season 1, then move to SG-1 season 9 and Atlantis season 2, followed by SG-1 season 10 and Atlantis season 3. You can finish either show’s season first within each pair.

Which overlap method should you choose?
| Priority | Best choice | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Most faithful to original timing | Episode-level broadcast order | Frequent switching between series |
| Fewest interruptions | Season-block order | Some references arrive slightly earlier or later than intended |
| Keeping dramatic arcs intact | Either method, provided multi-part stories stay together | May require adjusting a strict episode list |
| Strict in-universe chronology | Episode guide plus judgment at crossover boundaries | No universally authoritative single list for every scene |
What “chronological” means here
A franchise chronology can mean fictional time, original broadcast timing or a practical compromise between the two. This guide uses broad fictional continuity for the main placement, then uses broadcast-era overlap to explain where the shows belong together. It does not claim that every episode in a given season occurs before every episode in the next season.
That distinction matters most in the paired years. A strict scene-by-scene timeline can require constant switching and occasional judgment at crossover boundaries. A season-block plan is less exact, but it keeps character introductions, finales and other linked stories intact. Both approaches preserve the major narrative progression; they simply optimize for different viewing habits.
Where the two SG-1 films belong
The Ark of Truth
Watch The Ark of Truth after SG-1 season 10. It functions as a continuation and resolution of the show’s final major television storyline, so placing it earlier can reveal conclusions before the series has established the relevant conflict.
Continuum
Watch Continuum after The Ark of Truth. It is a separate continuation built around the established SG-1 cast and history. The two films are not interchangeable: the recommended order is The Ark of Truth, then Continuum.
Why the films come before the end of Atlantis
Atlantis continues beyond the end of SG-1’s television run. Placing both SG-1 films immediately after season 10 gives the original series its full continuation before you return to the remaining Atlantis seasons.
Finish Atlantis seasons 4–5
After the two films, watch the fourth and fifth seasons of Atlantis. These seasons continue the expedition’s story after the period shared with SG-1 and complete the series’ five-season run.
Do not move directly from SG-1 season 10 to Universe. The final Atlantis seasons occupy the intervening place in the broad live-action chronology.
End the core run with Stargate Universe
Stargate Universe follows the earlier live-action series in the franchise’s broad chronology. Watch seasons 1 and 2 after completing Atlantis. It uses the established gate mythology but shifts to a different group, location and storytelling format, making it a natural final stop for the connected live-action sequence.

Optional entries and how they change the order
Stargate Origins: the prequel choice
Stargate Origins is a prequel set before the 1994 film. If your only goal is strict in-universe chronology, place it first:
- Stargate Origins
- Stargate (1994)
- The core live-action order listed above
There is a strong reason not to begin there on a first franchise watch: Origins was released in 2018, long after the film and television mythology had been established. A release-order-first viewer will usually get a clearer introduction by starting with the 1994 film and saving the prequel until after the core run. Labeling it optional also prevents its later production context from being confused with the original opening chapter.
Stargate Infinity: animated completionist material
Stargate Infinity is an animated series. Include it only if you want a completionist list of franchise productions. It should be identified separately from the core live-action storyline rather than inserted into the main watch path as though it were required connective tissue.
The practical choices are therefore:
- Core live action: film, SG-1, overlapping Atlantis, the two SG-1 films, remaining Atlantis, then Universe.
- Strict story chronology: add Origins before the film.
- Completionist scope: add Infinity as a separately labeled animated entry.
A complete step-by-step plan
- Watch Stargate (1994). This supplies the premise used by the television continuity.
- Watch SG-1 seasons 1–7. Keep every continuing story together.
- Pair SG-1 season 8 with Atlantis season 1. Alternate using a broadcast guide, or finish each season as a block.
- Pair SG-1 season 9 with Atlantis season 2. Preserve all multi-part episodes.
- Pair SG-1 season 10 with Atlantis season 3. This completes the overlapping period.
- Watch The Ark of Truth. It follows SG-1 season 10.
- Watch Continuum. Keep it after The Ark of Truth.
- Watch Atlantis seasons 4–5.
- Watch Universe seasons 1–2. This is the final entry in the core live-action path.
- Add optional material if desired. Put Origins before the film for strict chronology, or watch it after the main run for release-order context; keep Infinity in a separate animated category.
Planning your viewing sessions
Before starting the overlapping years, decide whether you value precision or momentum. For precision, keep the GateWorld 2024 optimized guide open and mark each episode as you finish it. For momentum, write down the paired season blocks and complete one show at a time. Either way, record the season and episode number rather than relying only on an episode title, since different services can display titles and specials differently.
- Protect multi-part stories. Never switch series between chapters of a two-parter or another explicitly continuing story.
- Bookmark transitions. Save your place before changing from SG-1 to Atlantis, especially when watching on separate apps or discs.
- Use the guide as navigation. If an episode transition feels disruptive, finish the current arc and accept the small timing compromise of a season block.
- Separate optional material. Keep Origins and Infinity on a separate checklist so a completionist plan does not obscure the core path.
Collecting the franchise beyond streaming
Physical media can be useful when a service does not allow custom interleaving. GateWorld’s viewing-order material includes a “Get Stargate on Disc” link, making disc collections a natural option for viewers who want to own the episodes and switch between series manually. Check the exact release, included seasons, disc format and regional compatibility before buying; a general collection label does not by itself confirm those details.
Licensed tie-in novels are another optional category. The Fandemonium Books order form lists both SG-1 and Atlantis titles. Treat the books as supplemental reading rather than as required steps in the screen chronology, and verify current availability and continuity status for each title before adding one to your plan.
Common ordering mistakes
Watching all of SG-1 before starting Atlantis
This is an understandable binge strategy, but it ignores the fact that the shows overlap. You will still understand the plots, yet some references and crossover context arrive out of sequence.

Starting with Atlantis
Atlantis grows out of SG-1 events. Beginning with it removes the setup that explains why the expedition exists and why its location matters.

- The Complete Series
Putting the films in the wrong order
The films are not a two-item bundle with interchangeable placement. The sequence is The Ark of Truth, then Continuum.
Splitting a multi-part story
Even an otherwise accurate episode list becomes confusing if a two-parter is divided by a season switch or by the other series. Finish the connected episodes before changing shows.
Treating optional productions as mandatory
Origins is a prequel and Infinity is animated. Neither needs to be inserted into the core live-action path for a first watch.

Episode-level lists are useful at the overlap boundaries, but they should be treated as navigation aids rather than a reason to interrupt a story at an arbitrary point.
- Check whether the list follows broadcast order or attempts strict fictional chronology.
- Confirm that two-part episodes are grouped.
- Use the season and episode labels, not just titles, when moving between services.
- Bookmark your position before switching series.
- If a transition feels disruptive, finish the current arc and accept the small chronology compromise of a season block.
GateWorld’s 2024 optimized guide is specifically described as favoring broadcast order while clustering multi-episode stories. An older GateWorld recommended-order guide provides the continuity rationale for interleaving the series. InWhatOrder’s page, edited May 22, 2026, presents the same broad season placement used in this article. None of these broad guides makes a season-block list equivalent to a scene-by-scene timeline.
Release order versus chronological order
| Approach | Starting point | Best for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core chronological | Stargate (1994) | Readers who want the story’s broad in-universe progression | Requires interleaving SG-1 and Atlantis |
| Broadcast-oriented | Stargate (1994), then the shows in airing sequence | Preserving references and the original audience experience | More switching between series |
| Strict prequel-first | Stargate Origins | Viewers who prioritize fictional date over production context | Introduces a later-made prequel before the franchise’s original setup |
| Completionist | Core path plus Origins and Infinity | Fans who want every major screen production identified | Animated and prequel material no longer forms one clean live-action line |
Frequently asked questions
Can I watch SG-1 and Atlantis one series at a time?
Yes. Finish SG-1 season 8 and then Atlantis season 1, followed by the next paired seasons, if uninterrupted seasons are more important to you than exact episode timing.
Does Stargate Universe need to be watched before the SG-1 films?
No. The films continue SG-1 and belong immediately after its tenth season. Universe comes after the remaining Atlantis seasons in the broad chronology.

Is Stargate Origins required?
No. It is an optional prequel. Include it first only when strict in-universe chronology matters more to you than following the franchise’s original introduction.
Best Value
Where does Stargate Infinity fit?
Keep it in a separately labeled animated completionist list. It is not required for understanding the core live-action sequence.
Do I need an episode guide for a first watch?
No. The season-block sequence is sufficient for most viewers. Use an episode-level guide only if preserving broadcast timing and crossover references is a priority.
What should I do if my service lists only one show at a time?
Use the paired-season plan: complete SG-1 season 8 and Atlantis season 1, then continue with the next pair. This is less precise than episode interleaving but avoids unnecessary switching.
Can I place Origins after the main series?
Yes. That is the better choice for viewers who prefer release context. Its fictional setting is earlier than the 1994 film, but the series itself was released in 2018.
Should the novels be inserted between episodes?
No. The listed SG-1 and Atlantis novels are optional supplemental material. Their availability and continuity status should be checked individually, and they are not needed to follow the screen storyline.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the simplest Stargate watch order?
Start with Stargate (1994), watch SG-1 seasons 1–7, pair SG-1 seasons 8–10 with Atlantis seasons 1–3, watch The Ark of Truth and Continuum, finish Atlantis seasons 4–5, then watch Stargate Universe seasons 1–2.
Should I alternate SG-1 and Atlantis episode by episode?
Only if you want the closest approximation to broadcast chronology. A season-block approach is easier and still preserves the broad story order, provided multi-part episodes stay together.
Which SG-1 movie comes first?
The Ark of Truth comes first, followed by Continuum, after SG-1 season 10.
Where does Stargate Origins go?
Put it before the 1994 film for strict in-universe chronology, or save it until after the core live-action run if you prefer release-order context.
Is Stargate Infinity part of the core story?
No. It is an animated completionist entry and should be labeled separately from the required live-action sequence.
The Bottom Line
For most viewers: start with Stargate (1994), watch SG-1 seasons 1–7, pair SG-1 seasons 8–10 with Atlantis seasons 1–3, then watch The Ark of Truth, Continuum, Atlantis seasons 4–5 and Stargate Universe seasons 1–2. Add Origins only for strict prequel chronology and keep Infinity in a separate animated list.
