To start a genuinely new V Rising world, stop the server, make a downloadable copy of the current save, then either delete the contents of the folder named by SaveName or point SaveName at a new folder. Deleting the contents is permanent without an external backup; changing the name is reversible and keeps the old world intact. The same distinction applies to local and cloud-hosted sessions, but those saves use a different Windows path and should be managed through the game interface when Cloud Saves is enabled.

Choose the reset method before you touch a file
There are three practical ways to begin a fresh world. Your choice determines whether the old map can be recovered, how much storage remains in use and whether the reset happens immediately or on a schedule.

If you are uncertain whether the reset is permanent, use the new-SaveName method. It gives you a fresh world immediately while leaving a straightforward path back to the previous one.
Prepare a dedicated server safely
Announce downtime and stop the process cleanly
Tell players when the world will be unavailable, then stop the dedicated-server process from the host control panel or service manager. On a rented host, wait until the panel explicitly reports Offline before opening or changing any save or JSON file. Editing while the process is running can race with an autosave and leave a partial or contradictory world.

Download a rollback copy
Copy or download the complete current world folder before deleting anything or changing configuration. Keep the copy outside the live Saves directory—on your computer or another storage location—so an automatic cleanup or an accidental deletion cannot remove the only rollback copy. Stunlock Studios states: “It is highly recommended to backup the save files often and before patching or before starting the server after having patched.”
Include the folder’s contents and its enclosing folder name in the backup. Record the server build and the configured SaveName beside it; that makes it easier to identify the correct persistence-version directory after a later game update.

Open the server’s ServerHostSettings.json. The save normally lives in save-data/Saves/, or in the Saves directory beneath the server’s configured PersistentDataPath. The folder whose name exactly matches SaveName is the world the server will try to load. Check the spelling, capitalization and punctuation rather than assuming the newest-looking folder is active.
Also note whether the launch command includes -saveName. A command-line save name can select a different folder from the value you are looking at in the JSON, so inspect the service or panel startup arguments before concluding that the server ignored your change.

Perform a permanent wipe on a dedicated server
This method removes the world data inside the selected folder. It is appropriate only after you have verified the backup and are certain that the old map should not remain as a live option.
- Stop and verify. Stop the server and wait for the host panel or service manager to show it is offline.
- Confirm the target. In
ServerHostSettings.json, readSaveName; then open the matching folder undersave-data/Saves/or the configuredPersistentDataPath/Saves/. - Back up the folder. Download or copy the complete folder to storage outside the live
Savesdirectory. Do not rely on a backup that remains inside the directory you are about to clean. - Remove the contents only. Delete every file and subfolder inside the selected world folder, but retain the parent
Savesdirectory. Removing the parent can make the server fail to create or locate saves on the next launch. - Check settings before launch. Save the JSON and verify that the intended
GameSettingsPresetandServerGameSettings.jsonvalues are in place. Remove stale local or save-folder override files that would silently replace those values. - Start once for validation. Start the server, connect with one administrator account and verify the spawn area, map state and gameplay rules before announcing that the world is open.
On restart, the server sees an empty folder for the configured name and generates a new world. If the old world appears, do not delete more data immediately; use the troubleshooting checks below to determine which save name or path was actually selected.

Changing SaveName is the safest reset for a test season, a rules experiment or any community that may want to roll back. The old folder is not modified.
- Stop the server and wait for an offline state.
- Open
ServerHostSettings.jsonand changeSaveNameto an unused name, such asworld2. Use a name that does not already identify another world in the activeSavesdirectory. - Save the JSON without changing unrelated settings. JSON punctuation is strict: preserve quotation marks, commas and braces.
- Check the launch arguments for
-saveName. If it is present, update or remove it so it does not override the new JSON value. - Restart the server. A new folder with the new name should be created while the old folder remains untouched.
- Connect once and verify the new spawn, map and rules. To roll back later, stop the server and switch
SaveNameback to the original folder name.
Do not reuse a name whose folder contains an old session unless you deliberately intend to load that session. An unused name makes it obvious whether the server created a new world.

Make sure the intended rules load with the new world
A fresh map and the expected gameplay settings are separate checks. The world folder selected by SaveName determines the save, while presets and override files can determine rules.

Stunlock Studios’ dedicated-server instructions warn that default and local override files can take precedence over settings copied with a save. If the map is new but the rules are wrong, inspect every ServerGameSettings.json location and the preset value before changing the save again.
Use scheduled resets for recurring seasons
The dedicated-server setting ResetDaysInterval defines how many in-game days may pass between scheduled resets. Stunlock documents 0 as the default, which disables scheduled resets. Before loading a save, the server checks the interval; when a reset is due, it backs up the previous save and then uses a reset world.
- Set
ResetDaysIntervalto the interval your community wants instead of leaving it at0. - Use
DayOfResetasAnyor select a named weekday when the reset should align with a particular day. - Confirm where the reset process stores its backups and that the host has enough disk space for more than one world copy.
- Tell players the schedule and expected restart window; a scheduled reset is still a restart, not an in-place map refresh.
Scheduled resets suit communities that deliberately run repeating seasons. For a one-time wipe, manually changing SaveName gives clearer control over the exact launch and rollback point.

Reset a locally hosted or cloud-saved world
A world hosted from the game client is not stored in the dedicated-server save-data tree. On Windows, Stunlock documents these locations:

The persistence folder may be named v3, v4 or a later version after a breaking save-format change. Use the version that belongs to the installed game build rather than moving a session into an unrelated version directory.
Identify the correct local session
- Open the game and choose Load Game.
- Select the world you intend to reset and use Go to Directory. This reveals the exact session folder instead of forcing you to guess from GUID names.
- Exit the game and copy that session folder to a location outside the live save tree.
- For a reversible reset, preserve the original session and create or select a new session through the game’s normal hosting flow. For a permanent reset, use the in-game Load Game management controls to remove the old session after confirming the backup.
Handle Cloud Saves through the game interface
When Cloud Saves is enabled, delete the old session from the in-game Load Game interface after you have confirmed the dedicated copy. Manual deletion from the Windows folder can be undone by cloud synchronization, which may download the old session again. If the cloud copy and local copy disagree, allow synchronization to settle before deciding which session to remove, and keep the offline backup untouched.

A successful restart is not proof that the intended reset happened. Perform a short administrator-only acceptance check:

- The server process remains online without repeated save or JSON errors.
- The spawn and map state are new rather than the recognizable starting position and explored areas from the old world.
- The displayed rules match the values you selected in
ServerGameSettings.jsonor the chosen preset. - The server creates or updates the expected folder under the active
Savespath. - A test logout and reconnect preserve the new character and world state.
- The external backup can be opened and contains the old session before you consider deleting it.
Only after these checks should you send the public connection details or remove the maintenance notice.
Troubleshoot a reset that did not behave as expected
The old world still loads
- Reopen
ServerHostSettings.jsonand compareSaveNamecharacter by character with the folder you edited. - Inspect the service, script or hosting-panel launch arguments for
-saveName; it may override the JSON value. - Confirm that you edited the active
PersistentDataPath, not a duplicate installation or a backup directory. - Stop the server again before moving or renaming anything. Change to an unmistakably unused name such as
world2, restart and check whether that new folder appears.
The map is fresh but the rules are old or incorrect
- Check whether
GameSettingsPresetis populated. A preset can replace the explicit values you expected fromServerGameSettings.json. - Search every applicable default, local and save-folder
ServerGameSettings.jsonlocation for a stale override. - Compare the file used by the server with the file you edited; panel interfaces sometimes expose more than one configuration copy.
- Restart after correcting the precedence issue and test one rule whose effect is obvious before opening the server to players.
The server will not start after editing JSON
JSON does not tolerate a missing comma, an extra comma, an unmatched brace or an accidental smart quote. Restore the backup configuration, validate the edited file with a JSON-aware editor, then reapply one change at a time while the server is offline. Do not troubleshoot by deleting the world folder; a syntax error and a save problem are separate failures.
The expected save folder is missing after an update
Check the persistence-version directory used by the installed build. Breaking save-format changes can move sessions from v3 to v4 or a later directory. Follow the instructions for the server build actually installed, and do not overwrite a newer version with an older backup until you have copied both locations.
A cloud session returns after deletion
Cloud synchronization can restore a manually deleted folder. Use Load Game and its directory or deletion controls, confirm that the dedicated backup is safe, and then let the cloud service complete its update before relaunching the game.
Operational checklist
- Players have been warned and the server is stopped.
- The complete old world is downloaded outside the live
Savesdirectory. - The active path and exact
SaveName(plus any-saveNameargument) are known. - You chose permanent deletion, a new reversible name or a scheduled reset deliberately.
GameSettingsPreset, explicit settings and override files agree.- The parent
Savesdirectory remains in place after a permanent wipe. - The server has been started and tested privately for spawn, map and rules.
- For local or cloud saves, the correct persistence-version and GUID session were identified through Load Game and Go to Directory.
When managed hosting changes the procedure
A hosting provider may expose file management, restart and backup controls under different labels. Treat those labels as a presentation layer: the underlying workflow is still to stop the process, back up the selected world, edit the active host settings, and verify the generated save after restart. Provider-specific paths and panel buttons can vary, so use the panel’s documented file root and confirm that it corresponds to the server’s configured PersistentDataPath before deleting anything.
