Diablo 4’s Torment system has changed since Vessel of Hatred launched: Torment now has 12 tiers, and Blizzard removed the old armor and resistance penalties. The familiar Pit 20/35/50/65 unlocks and four-tier penalty values below describe the original 2.0-era system, not current requirements. Blizzard’s announcements establish the 12-tier expansion but do not specify each tier’s current unlock threshold.
What Torment difficulty does
Torment is Diablo 4’s endgame difficulty ladder. In the original 2.0 design, higher Torment meant tougher combat and a greater chance of Legendary and Ancestral drops. Blizzard’s later Season of Reckoning announcement describes higher tiers as offering larger gold and experience bonuses, alongside improved drop rates for sought-after gear and materials. The exact rewards and unlock conditions depend on the version you are playing.

The difficulty update was part of the base game, so owning the Vessel of Hatred expansion was not required to access the system. The expansion is a separate purchase for its campaign and expansion-specific content. Blizzard’s launch announcement distinguishes the expansion from the base-game update.

In the 2.0-era version, character level and Pit clears determined access. Blizzard’s original explanation set out this progression:
#1 Best Overall
- Normal and Hard were available by default.
- Expert unlocked after completing the prologue.
- Penitent unlocked at level 50, according to the PTR description.
- Reaching level 60 unlocked the Pit and Pit tiers 1–20.
- Completing Pit tier 20 unlocked Torment I; tier 35 unlocked Torment II; tier 50 unlocked Torment III; and tier 65 unlocked Torment IV.
Those Pit thresholds are historical rules for the original four-tier system. Do not use them as a current unlock guide: Blizzard later expanded Torment to 12 tiers, and the announcements cited here do not give the present threshold for each one. See Blizzard’s 2.0 PTR overview for the original design and its Season of Hatred Rising announcement for launch-era rules.
What changed in later versions
Torment grew from four tiers to 12
Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning announcement says the level cap increased to 70 for all players and Torment expanded from four tiers to 12. It also describes higher tiers as more challenging and as providing larger gold and experience bonuses and improved drops for coveted gear and materials. The announcement does not list the unlock requirement for each tier, so the old Pit 20/35/50/65 sequence cannot establish current thresholds. Read Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning announcement.

The old armor and resistance penalties were removed
The original system applied a “Curse” to armor and all resistances at each Torment tier. Blizzard later said these per-Torment penalties were removed; each selected difficulty instead provides a recommended Toughness level. Numeric Toughness targets are not specified in the cited announcement. For a current character, use the recommendation shown in game rather than assuming an old penalty or inventing a target. Blizzard’s Season of Divine Intervention announcement explains the change.

These figures applied to the original four-tier system and should not be treated as current effects:
| Original Torment tier | Armor penalty | All-resistance penalty |
|---|---|---|
| Torment I | −250 Armor | −25% |
| Torment II | −500 Armor | −50% |
| Torment III | −750 Armor | −75% |
| Torment IV | −1,000 Armor | −100% |
Blizzard listed these values in its 2.0-era materials; the later removal of per-Torment armor and resistance penalties supersedes them for the updated system.

Choose based on whether your character can handle the added danger while clearing content at a pace that makes the rewards worthwhile. Higher tiers are intended to raise challenge and improve rewards, but a tier that slows or stops your progress may not be the better option. Use the in-game recommended Toughness level as a defensive readiness check; the cited Blizzard material does not provide a numeric target.

Blizzard described the original difficulty redesign as a way to give players more choice in engaging with Diablo 4’s risk-and-reward style. That remains a useful way to think about the ladder: raise difficulty when your build can sustain the challenge and you want the higher-tier rewards, rather than treating the highest available tier as automatically optimal.
