Buying a handheld console from an overseas seller is no longer a simple comparison of the seller’s price and shipping charge. For covered shipments, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says duty-free de minimis treatment for goods valued at $800 or less is unavailable from August 29, 2025, so a low-value parcel can still incur duty, taxes or fees. Separately, the manufacturer—not CBP—decides whether that particular regional unit can receive warranty service in the United States.
The safe way to compare an imported console with a domestically sold one is to calculate total landed cost, identify who will handle entry, and obtain written confirmation of warranty eligibility, repair location, shipping responsibility and documentation requirements before paying.

Why an overseas console’s sticker price is not the final price
CBP’s mailed-goods guidance says that, effective August 29, 2025, covered shipments entering the United States from all countries no longer receive duty-free treatment under the $800 de minimis provision in 19 U.S.C. § 1321(a)(2)(C). A handheld console priced below $800 can therefore be subject to applicable duties, taxes and carrier or processing fees when it enters the country.
This is an import-treatment rule, not a published handheld-console rate. CBP says the amount assessed depends on factors including the declared value and country of origin, along with other transaction details. The country from which a seller ships is not necessarily the product’s country of origin. A console manufactured in one country and shipped from a warehouse in another can require different classification and origin analysis than a superficially similar unit.

What “landed cost” means
For a realistic comparison, add every amount that can be identified before ordering:
- The purchase price charged by the seller.
- International shipping and insurance.
- Any duty, tax or customs-related charge assessed at entry.
- Carrier advancement, brokerage or disbursement fees, if charged.
- Payment-conversion or transaction fees.
- The cost of sending a defective unit to the required repair location.
“Free shipping” describes the seller’s shipping charge; it does not by itself prove that customs charges are prepaid. Ask the seller whether the displayed total includes import charges, which party is the importer of record and whether the carrier may collect money before delivery.
Why no universal duty estimate is responsible
The available CBP guidance does not establish a single duty rate for every handheld console. The exact model, technical characteristics, tariff classification, declared value, origin and entry method can all matter. Do not treat a percentage quoted for another electronic product as a reliable estimate for your console. For a transaction-specific answer, use the current CBP classification process or ask a qualified customs professional with the commercial invoice and product details.

CBP’s personal-goods guidance says a person receiving goods purchased overseas by shipment generally must file an entry within five working days after arrival. An extension of up to 25 days may be requested. The guidance describes personal importations as generally cleared informally, without a bond, but says a port director can require formal entry for admissibility enforcement, revenue protection or efficient CBP operations.
Typical steps for a mailed console
- Keep the transaction documents together. Save the order confirmation, commercial invoice, payment record, shipping notice and tracking information. CBP’s described process refers to the bill of sale and bill of lading or air waybill.
- Watch the carrier and CBP notices. A carrier may request information, payment or an entry decision. Respond within the stated deadline rather than assuming the parcel will clear automatically.
- Provide an accurate description and value. Describe the device as a handheld gaming console and use the actual transaction value. Do not ask a seller to understate value or misdescribe the goods; inaccurate information can create clearance and enforcement problems.
- Pay assessed charges through the instructed channel. Keep the receipt showing what was paid and to whom. A shipping charge, duty assessment and broker fee are different line items.
- Retain the release record. Store entry, payment and delivery documents with the warranty invoice. They may be needed if the manufacturer asks for proof of lawful importation or if a dispute arises.
If entry is not filed
CBP warns that failure to file can result in the goods being transferred to a bonded warehouse and potentially later offered for public sale. That is a stated procedural consequence, not a prediction that an ordinary parcel will reach that stage. If a shipment is held, follow the carrier’s notice and CBP’s instructions promptly; ask for an extension when the guidance allows one.

When formal entry and a customs broker matter
CBP has a separate formal-entry help article for goods valued at $2,500 or more. It advises contacting the port or the relevant import specialist with the commercial invoice, obtaining tariff-classification and duty-rate information, and asking about other requirements. The $2,500 figure is the value addressed by that article, not a statement that formal entry is impossible below it or mandatory for every shipment at or above it.
A licensed customs broker can prepare paperwork and arrange a bond in a formal-entry process for an additional fee. A broker is conditional assistance, not an automatic requirement for every consumer console parcel. Before paying for one, determine whether the carrier or CBP has actually required formal entry or more involved representation. If the shipment is unusually valuable, contains multiple units, is for business use, or presents classification or admissibility questions, professional help can reduce paperwork mistakes.
Questions to ask a broker or carrier
- Who will be listed as importer of record?
- Which entry type is being used, and what deadline applies?
- What documents are required beyond the invoice and air waybill?
- Are the quoted amounts duty, tax, carrier fees, broker fees, or a combination?
- Who is responsible if CBP requests a different classification or additional evidence?
Safety and labeling rules still apply
Import clearance does not replace other federal requirements. Federal law provides for refusing admission of covered consumer products that fail applicable consumer-product safety rules or lack required certificates or labels in circumstances where those documents are required. This is a general statutory requirement, not evidence of a blanket prohibition on ordinary handheld consoles or a special permit requirement for every unit.
The importer must ensure compliance with other agencies’ requirements where applicable. Keep the manufacturer’s model information, electrical ratings, included battery documentation and instructions. If a particular model has a recall, certification issue or labeling requirement, resolve that device-specific question before shipment rather than relying on the fact that another version entered the country successfully.
Customs clearance and warranty coverage are separate decisions
CBP decides whether goods may enter and what charges or procedures apply. The manufacturer decides whether it will repair or replace a particular unit under its warranty, and where that service can occur. Paying duty does not create a U.S. warranty; receiving a warranty document does not exempt a shipment from import rules.

What an “international warranty” may require
ASUS’s international-warranty material for gaming handhelds illustrates the limits of the label. Service may be available only when both the country where the product was purchased and the country where service is requested appear in the manufacturer’s covered-country list, and when the product has the applicable warranty entitlement. ASUS warns that procedures differ by country, parts may be unavailable, fees or other restrictions may apply, and the service center may request proof of purchase or proof that the product was properly imported.
Consequently, a seller’s statement that a console has an “international warranty” is not enough. Verify the exact model or regional SKU, the original market, the intended U.S. service country and the warranty period with the manufacturer before ordering. Save the response or case number.
Ordinary warranty exclusions still apply
For the ROG Ally, ASUS says the warranty covers technical hardware issues during the warranty period under normal-use conditions. Its customer-induced-damage criteria exclude listed forms of damage caused by the customer; ASUS notes that a chargeable repair may be offered for such damage. Those terms do not answer whether a gray-market unit is covered in the United States. Coverage can depend on the model, original market, warranty card, proof of purchase and the service center’s determination.
The ASUS terms should not be generalized to every handheld manufacturer. For any other brand, obtain the applicable regional warranty card and ask the manufacturer directly about the imported unit.

The evidence does not establish a current apples-to-apples price advantage for imported consoles. Compare the complete cost and service route instead of assuming an overseas listing is cheaper.

Checklist before placing the order
- Identify the exact unit. Record the model number, regional SKU, included accessories, wireless or power variant and seller’s country.
- Ask for origin and value information. Request the product’s country of origin, the value that will appear on the commercial invoice and whether the seller uses a prepaid-import arrangement.
- Clarify the importer of record. Confirm whether you, the seller or the carrier will handle entry and who pays any assessment.
- Calculate a range, not a guessed rate. Start with the seller’s total and add a reserve for transaction-dependent duty, tax and carrier charges. Do not represent the reserve as a CBP quote.
- Check warranty eligibility in writing. Give the manufacturer the serial or model, original sale country, U.S. destination and intended purchase date. Ask whether U.S. service is available.
- Map a failed-device scenario. Confirm the proof-of-purchase format, return authorization process, repair location, shipping payer, parts availability, expected turnaround and whether the unit must return to the purchase country.
- Read the seller’s return terms. Look for the return window, restocking charge, return address, dead-on-arrival procedure and responsibility for a second customs transaction.
- Archive records. Keep the invoice, payment confirmation, shipping documents, customs receipts, warranty card and manufacturer correspondence in one folder.
What to do if the parcel is held
Carrier requests information or payment
Compare the request with your order records. Ask the carrier to identify whether the amount is a duty, tax, advancement charge or brokerage fee, and request the deadline for responding. Submit only accurate documents. If the notice is unclear, contact CBP or a licensed broker about the specific shipment rather than paying an unrelated third party.
CBP requests a different entry or more evidence
Follow the port or carrier instructions and provide the invoice, air waybill and product description. If the matter involves classification, value or admissibility, ask the relevant port or import specialist what information is needed. A formal-entry requirement can arise even when the shipment is a personal purchase.
The seller declared the wrong value or description
Do not endorse an inaccurate declaration. Tell the seller and carrier that the documents must reflect the actual transaction. Keep written evidence of your request. A corrected declaration may delay delivery, but accepting false information can create a larger customs problem.
Planning for warranty repair after delivery
Test the console promptly within the seller’s return period, while preserving the packaging and accessories. Record the serial number and photograph the condition before shipping it anywhere. If a fault appears, use the manufacturer’s official support route and describe the original market accurately.

Ask support these specific questions:
- Is this exact regional model eligible for service in the United States?
- Does the warranty begin on the retail invoice date, activation date or another date?
- What proof of purchase and importation must be supplied?
- Will the service center provide a U.S. shipping label, and who pays if international shipping is required?
- Are replacement parts stocked in the United States?
- Can the repair be refused or converted to a paid repair because of regional restrictions or customer-induced damage?
- What happens to a replacement unit’s customs and warranty status?
Back up personal data before sending the device. Remove accounts, memory cards and accessories unless support specifically requests them. Use tracked shipping and retain the handoff receipt.
A practical decision rule
An imported console is worth considering only when the possible savings or unique regional configuration justify the uncertainty you have confirmed. Proceed when you can document the landed-cost assumptions, identify the importer-of-record arrangement, and obtain a credible warranty and return path for the exact model. Prefer the domestic option when the overseas seller will not disclose origin or value, customs responsibility is vague, the manufacturer will not confirm U.S. service, or a cross-border repair would cost nearly as much as the expected savings.
Rules and carrier procedures can change. Recheck current CBP instructions immediately before ordering, particularly for a high-value shipment or a purchase made after a policy change. Treat the manufacturer’s written answer and the unit-specific warranty documents as the controlling evidence for service—not a marketplace badge or a seller’s generic description.
