A release might be a draftable booster set, Commander decks, a Secret Lair drop, or another product type. Its format legality, digital availability, and alternate card versions depend on the specific release and sometimes the individual card.
What is Universes Beyond?
Wizards of the Coast describes Universes Beyond as a brand within Magic that exists alongside the game’s other products. It brings characters and settings from other fictional properties into Magic’s rules and card system. The line is not limited to one product channel or way to play.
That distinction matters: “Universes Beyond set” does not by itself tell you whether a product is draftable, a ready-to-play Commander deck, available online, or legal in a particular format. Wizards says the product form is chosen to suit the property.
What kinds of products can a release include?
Universes Beyond has included or may take several forms, from standalone products to content integrated with other Magic releases. Wizards has described draftable booster sets, Commander decks, Secret Lair drops, small sets, and property-themed versions of cards that also have Magic-themed treatments.
#1 Best Overall
- 100-card ready-to-play Warhammer 40,000 Commander Deck—The Ruinous Powers
- Blue-Black-Red Chaos Deck—contains 2 legendary traditional foil cards plus 98 nonfoil cards
- Every card features Warhammer-themed art—including 42 cards that are new to Magic
- 1 foil-etched Display Commander
- 10 double-sided tokens, 1 life tracker, and 1 deck box
- Draftable booster set: A larger set built for Limited play such as draft, as well as potentially for Constructed formats.
- Commander decks: Preconstructed decks centered on the property and intended for Commander play.
- Secret Lair drop: A limited product presentation that can include mechanically unique cards or alternate treatments.
- Other approaches: Cards can also be integrated into a premier set or presented in a smaller release. The actual product mix depends on the collaboration.
When comparing products, check the named release and product type rather than assuming a property has a booster box, Commander deck, or every other format. Wizards’ descriptions of the line’s product forms and design choices explain why releases can differ.
Are Universes Beyond cards legal in Standard and other formats?
For new Universes Beyond booster sets releasing from 2025 onward, Wizards announced that the main set would be designed to be legal in all major Constructed formats, including Standard, like ordinary Magic booster sets. The announcement was forward-looking; it did not change the legality of older releases such as The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth or Assassin’s Creed.
This superseded the original 2021 policy, when Wizards said Universes Beyond cards would not be Standard legal. That statement described the policy at the time, not the rule for new booster sets beginning in 2025. See Wizards’ October 25, 2024 format-legality announcement for the change and its scope.

Do not treat every card associated with a booster release as automatically legal in every format. A product can include material outside its main set: Wizards notes that some Commander-deck or Jumpstart cards may be Eternal legal, while Special Guests and reprints follow their applicable rules. Check the individual card’s current legality and the format you want to play.

Can I play Universes Beyond in Commander?
Many Universes Beyond products are made for Commander, including preconstructed decks. Cards from other product types may also be playable in Commander if their current card legality and the format’s rules allow them. The product label alone does not establish a card’s legality, so check the specific card rather than assuming that every card in a collaboration is legal—or that every release includes a Commander deck.
Are Universes Beyond sets on Arena or Magic Online?
No: a tabletop Universes Beyond release is not automatically available on Magic: The Gathering Arena or Magic Online. Wizards has handled digital availability set by set. Its April 2025 update introduced Through the Omenpaths, digital Universes Within versions of certain full sets that otherwise would not come to digital platforms. These cards are mechanically identical to their tabletop counterparts but use different names and creative treatments.

Wizards said it would not create a Through the Omenpaths mirror for every Universes Beyond set. The announcement named Final Fantasy and Avatar: The Last Airbender as 2025 digital releases, and Marvel’s Spider-Man as a tabletop set receiving a Through the Omenpaths counterpart. Those are dated examples, not a guarantee for later releases. Check the current platform listing for the set you want to play. Details are in Wizards’ digital availability update.
What is the difference between Universes Beyond and Universes Within?
Universes Beyond uses another fictional property’s setting and characters on Magic cards. “Universes Within” refers to Magic-multiverse treatments used in particular contexts; it is not a promise that every Universes Beyond product will receive a matching version.

In a June 2021 update, Wizards said it planned Magic-multiverse versions of mechanically unique cards from specified Universes Beyond Secret Lair drops. It described an approximate six-month timing that could vary, and said matching cards would count as the same game piece for deck-building limits. The versions could appear on The List, with possible future reprints. This was a plan for specified Secret Lair cards, not a fixed schedule or universal rule for collaborations. Through the Omenpaths digital versions
Through the Omenpaths is a separate digital approach for certain full sets: it gives the cards Universes Within names and creative treatments on digital platforms. It does not mean that a physical Secret Lair card has received a reprint, and it does not apply to every Universes Beyond set.

Wizards says its teams research the source material, consult subject-matter experts, and work with the licensor. They choose mechanics and product formats intended to express what is distinctive about the property. The challenge is translating characters and ideas into Magic’s card types, gameplay, and conflict structure; not every element maps neatly to the game.
As Head Designer Mark Rosewater put it in a February 2026 article about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles release: “A good Universes Beyond design captures the essence of the property.” His design article describes that goal in the context of the collaboration.

What should I check before buying or building around a release?
- Product form: Is it a draftable booster set, a Commander deck, a Secret Lair drop, or another product?
- Where you plan to play: Is the release tabletop-only, or is a digital version listed for Arena or Magic Online?
- Format legality: Does the card belong to the main booster set or an associated product, and what is its current legality in your chosen format?
- Alternate treatments: Is there a stated Universes Within version for a relevant Secret Lair card, or a digital Through the Omenpaths counterpart?
- Your goal: Are you looking to draft, play Commander out of the box, collect the property, or use a particular card in Constructed?
For example, someone choosing between a booster product and a preconstructed Commander deck should compare both the intended play experience and the exact cards’ legality. Someone seeking a digital version should check the platform listing instead of inferring availability from a tabletop release.
How often are Universes Beyond sets released?
There is no established permanent annual ratio. Wizards’ July 17, 2026 schedule announcement said 2027 would have three Magic Multiverse sets and three Universes Beyond sets, alternating between them. That is a dated schedule for 2027, not a rule for future years. See Wizards’ 2027 schedule announcement.
