What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by measuring the game you play, then make one reversible change at a time. Check which resources are busy, address unnecessary background activity and storage clutter, and adjust game or Windows settings before deciding that you need new hardware. There is no universal FPS gain: results depend on the PC, game, settings, and power conditions.
Measure the problem before changing anything
Pick a repeatable scene in the game where you notice the slowdown. Use the same resolution, graphics preset, display mode, and power condition for each comparison. Record average frame rate if the game or an overlay provides it, and note stutter or uneven frame pacing as well; a higher average does not necessarily mean play feels smoother.
Change one setting or maintenance item at a time, then repeat the same scene. This makes it easier to tell whether that specific change helped. Treat the comparison as a check on your own PC, not a promised result for other systems.
Check what is using your PC’s resources
While the game is struggling, open Task Manager and inspect CPU, memory, and disk activity. Microsoft recommends using Task Manager to check resource use and Startup apps when troubleshooting sluggish Windows performance (Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance).

- Close only apps and browser tabs you do not need while playing.
- Look for a process using substantial resources at the same time the game slows down, but do not assume a high percentage by itself proves the cause.
- Check whether the symptom is low frame rate, stutter, slow loading, or delayed response. Different symptoms can point to different constraints.
Try low-risk Windows maintenance
Microsoft’s general guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 includes checking for Windows updates and optional driver updates, freeing storage, reviewing Startup apps, and closing unused apps. Apply changes one at a time and compare with your baseline rather than doing a broad “cleanup” and guessing what helped.
- Check updates. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Also review optional driver updates where available; install only updates relevant to your hardware.
- Free storage space. Review Settings > System > Storage and remove temporary files you do not need, or use Disk Cleanup where available. Avoid deleting files you cannot identify.
- Review startup apps. Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable only items you recognize and do not need to launch with Windows.
- Close unused apps and restart if appropriate. Retest the same game scene after changes so you can judge whether the symptom improved.
General maintenance will not solve every performance problem. Microsoft notes that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from these steps (Microsoft Support).

Adjust game settings and the Windows graphics path
Reduce demanding game settings gradually
Lower resolution or demanding visual effects in small increments, then repeat your comparison scene. Keep track of the visual trade-off as well as frame rate: the aim is a smoother experience at settings you still find acceptable, not the lowest possible graphics quality.
Use Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only in its supported scope
Microsoft says Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless windowed mode. It uses a newer presentation model intended to reduce frame latency and can enable Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. It is not a general switch for every game or display mode. After changing the option, restart the game. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions for the feature and its settings.

Choose a high-performance GPU for a game when relevant
If your PC has more than one GPU, Windows provides per-app graphics preferences, including a high-performance option. Set it for the affected game only if the system actually has multiple GPUs and the selection is relevant; changing this setting is not a universal FPS fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Balance performance mode against power, battery, and heat
Microsoft says Windows’ Best performance power mode can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed, at the cost of more power use. On a laptop, that means faster battery drain and potentially more heat. It is most appropriate to test when the laptop is plugged in and you want performance over battery life; compare results and switch back if the trade-off is not worthwhile.

Use graphics-vendor tools as settings aids, not proof of a gain
NVIDIA says its NVIDIA App can update drivers and suggest in-game settings using information about the PC’s GPU, CPU, and display (NVIDIA App). Those suggestions are a convenient starting point, not independent evidence that a particular change will improve performance on your system. Compare any suggested settings against your own baseline.
Decide whether a hardware limitation remains
If the same problem persists after relevant software and settings changes, collect details before shopping: the PC model or component specifications, the game, resolution and graphics settings, the symptom, and your before-and-after observations. A GPU, CPU, memory, or storage upgrade only makes sense when the evidence points to that component and the replacement is compatible. For some older PCs, Microsoft cautions that general Windows performance steps may not produce significant improvements.
