Valve celebrated Half-Life 2’s 20th anniversary in November 2024 with a major game update, a documentary featuring original team members and an announcement that its development art book, Raising the Bar, would return in an expanded edition. The update brought Episodes One and Two into the main game, added developer commentary and Steam Workshop support, and preserved the pre-anniversary build on a public beta branch.
When was Half-Life 2’s 20th anniversary?
Half-Life 2 was released on November 16, 2004. The 20th anniversary fell on November 16, 2024; Valve announced its anniversary update the day before, describing it as a celebration of players who had enjoyed, discovered or rediscovered the game since its release. Valve’s Steam announcement gives the release date and its framing for the milestone.

What did the anniversary update add?
Valve’s anniversary update notes describe changes to the game, its extras and how the campaigns fit together.
- Episodes One and Two: Both expansions are included in Half-Life 2 and accessible from its main menu. After completing one campaign, players can progress automatically to the next expansion.
- Developer commentary: The update adds 3.5 hours of commentary.
- Steam Workshop: Workshop support lets players access community-created content through Steam.
- Steam Game Recording: The update adds events for Steam’s game-recording feature.
- Game fixes and restored content: Valve made map and gameplay fixes and restored or improved content.
- Lost Coast: The short, technology-focused episode is available from the Extras menu.
How to access the earlier version
Players who need the pre-anniversary build can opt into Valve’s public beta branch named steam_legacy, described as “Pre-20th Anniversary Build.” This provides a way to select the older version, but Valve’s announcement does not guarantee that a particular mod or setup will work with it.

For players deciding which version to use, the practical distinction is whether they want the anniversary features and integrated campaigns or need the older build for a specific existing setup. The announcement confirms what the branch is, not compatibility with individual mods.
What is in the anniversary documentary?
Valve published the Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Documentary on November 15, 2024. It reunites members of the original development team to discuss making the game, including running short of money, the hack and leak, a lawsuit from the publisher and the work of building Steam. It is a digital documentary for viewers interested in the game’s development history.

Valve announced that Raising the Bar: The Art of Half-Life 2 would return to print in an expanded second edition in 2025, nearly two decades after the first edition went out of print. Valve described the book as covering the making of Half-Life 2, with new concept art from Episodes One and Two and ideas and experiments for the unmade Episode Three. The announcement is a schedule from 2024, not confirmation of current stock. Anyone seeking it should check a retailer listing for the expanded edition; availability and price are not established here.

Valve also said the game and episode soundtracks are available to stream or download for free. That announcement concerns digital music, not a confirmed physical soundtrack release.
