Voice acting can plausibly make a conversational NPC feel more vivid, coherent, and emotionally present—but current evidence does not establish that acting quality itself causes greater immersion. Speech interaction, dialogue coherence, timing, and player agency all contribute to an exchange, and studies of those factors should not be mistaken for direct tests of voice performance.
What immersion means in a conversation with an NPC
In a game conversation, immersion can mean feeling absorbed in the game world or experience. That is related to, but not identical with, finding a particular character believable. A convincing voice may support a character’s identity and emotional tone; whether the interaction feels immersive also depends on what the character says, how the exchange unfolds, and how the player can respond.
This distinction matters because research on NPC dialogue or speech interaction does not necessarily measure the effect of an actor’s performance. The available studies offer useful clues about conversational NPCs, but do not isolate voice acting as a cause of immersion.
How vocal performance could help a character feel present
As a design matter, vocal expression, clarity, pacing, and delivery that fits a character can help players interpret who is speaking and what a moment means. A line delivered with warmth, hesitation, or urgency may communicate a different emotional tone from the same words spoken flatly. This is a plausible explanation for why a performance can make an NPC feel more immediate; it is not a causal result established by the studies cited here.

Voice performance is also only one part of the interaction. If the dialogue contradicts the character or ignores the situation, expressive delivery may not make the exchange convincing. Likewise, even fitting lines can feel awkward if turns arrive unnaturally or the player has little meaningful influence over the conversation.
What studies of NPC speech and dialogue suggest
Spoken interaction is perceived as an opportunity
A 2024 expert survey and interview study found that 15 of 16 participants highlighted the potential for speech interaction with NPCs to enhance game immersion. The finding reflects expert perceptions of speech interaction—not a controlled test of voice actors, performance quality, or a measured increase in player immersion. Dialogue does not automatically improve measured immersion
A 2021 study examined using NPC dialogue to collect player self-reports. Measures including immersion did not differ significantly from those collected through traditional overlay questionnaires, although NPC dialogue enhanced meaning. This was a comparison of data-gathering methods, not of voice performances; it is a reminder that putting an exchange into the game world does not guarantee a higher immersion measure. Coherence and timing can shape the experience
An exploratory 2026 study of speech-based generative-AI NPCs in a VR game reported that unnatural conversational flow, incorrect or inconsistent responses, and uninformative dialogue disrupted immersion and gameplay. That points to coherence as a potential factor in how conversational NPCs feel, but the study concerns generated interaction, not scripted dialogue or acting quality. A separate 2026 study used a simulated narrative environment and 34 participants to explore how two kinds of latency in LLM-driven game conversations affect player experience. It makes timing relevant to the design of conversational NPCs, but does not show that an actor’s pauses or delivery cause a particular immersion effect. How to assess a conversational NPC beyond “good voice acting”
When considering why a character feels convincing—or why a conversation falls flat—separate the observable parts of the interaction rather than treating them as one quality:

- Dialogue and character coherence: Do the lines fit the character and the situation? The exploratory VR study identifies inconsistent and uninformative responses as possible immersion disruptors in speech-based NPC interaction.
- Conversational timing: Do pauses and turn-taking feel natural? Latency research makes timing a relevant consideration, though it does not establish an effect of actor delivery.
- Player agency: Can the player meaningfully shape the exchange? The 2024 expert study concerns speech interaction as a broader modality, not the quality of a performance.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
Current adjacent findings make it reasonable to treat voice as one potential contributor to a more convincing NPC conversation. They also suggest that spoken interaction, coherent replies, and conversational flow deserve attention. But the evidence described here does not directly compare voice acting performances or test whether stronger acting causes greater immersion in games with conversational NPCs. A confident claim about that specific effect would go beyond what these studies establish.
