If NPCs are difficult to hear, start in the game’s Audio or Sound menu: raise Dialogue, Voice, Voice-over or Speech volume, then modestly lower Music and Effects. Next, test any speech-enhancement setting, channel options and dynamic-range presets; turn on subtitles or captions if needed. Controls and menu labels vary by game and platform.
1. Balance dialogue against music and effects
Look for separate sliders labelled Dialogue, Voice, Voice-over or Speech and raise the relevant one. If speech is still masked, lower Music, Effects, Ambient or Background sounds a little at a time. Avoid turning every other category down at once; small changes make it easier to tell which part of the mix is competing with speech.
Separate controls are not universal, but Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 recommends independent volume controls for categories such as music, voice-over, active and background effects, narration and voice chat. It notes that competing music and speech can cause players to miss important information.
2. Test a speech-enhancement option
Search the audio settings for Voice Boost, Dialogue Boost or Speech Focus. If the game offers one, test it during an NPC conversation and listen to what happens to the rest of the mix. Enhancement can make dialogue clearer while changing the prominence or clarity of music and effects.

For example, God of War Ragnarök’s accessibility page says Voice Boost adjusts the mix for dialogue clarity and may affect music and effects clarity while characters speak. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla settings page also describes dialogue boost. These are game-specific implementations, not settings every title includes.
3. Check channel layout and panning
If dialogue sounds uneven between left and right, or seems to be missing from one side, look for Mono, Center Pan or a dialogue-panning option. Mono sends the same audio to both channels; centering dialogue can make speech easier to locate. The trade-off is less spatial separation and potentially less immersion.

In God of War Ragnarök, Center Pan routes character dialogue through the center audio channel. The game’s documentation warns that this removes panning and surround information. Its specific controls—including an audio-panning slider and integrated mono support—should not be assumed to exist in other games. Xbox’s Guideline 105 also describes mono output as sending audio to both channels.
4. Reduce the gap between loud and quiet sounds
If explosions, music or other loud moments overwhelm quieter conversations, try a reduced dynamic-range or night-style audio preset. It narrows the difference between quiet and loud sounds, which can make speech easier to hear without raising the overall volume as much. The trade-off is less contrast across the mix, and preset names and behavior vary by game.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s accessibility settings list Default, Midnight and Studio Reference dynamic-range options. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla describes presets that reduce the difference between the quietest and loudest sounds. Star Wars Outlaws documents configurable dynamic range and a dynamic audio mix that may remove lower-priority sounds during dialogue.
5. Turn on subtitles or captions
Enable dialogue subtitles if you need text for spoken lines. Captions can also represent non-speech audio, such as sound effects. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 104 distinguishes subtitles for speech from captions for all audio, including non-speech sounds.

Check whether the game has separate options for conversations, cinematics or ambient subtitles. Coverage of NPC chatter varies; missing ambient dialogue text can mean losing story context or objective clues. For instance, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor lists dialogue subtitles, but that does not establish how every game handles incidental NPC speech.

- Open the game’s Audio or Sound settings and raise Dialogue, Voice, Voice-over or Speech volume, if available.
- Lower Music, Effects, Ambient or Background volume modestly and test another NPC conversation.
- Try Voice Boost, Dialogue Boost or Speech Focus, if offered; check whether music and effects still sound acceptable.
- If speech seems uneven across the stereo field, test Mono or Center Pan.
- If loud sounds swamp quieter speech, test a reduced dynamic-range or night-style preset.
- Enable dialogue subtitles or captions, including any separate conversation, cinematic or ambient options.
- Restore any setting that worsens the mix. If the issue remains, consult support for the specific game or check the platform’s audio configuration.
Exact labels and available controls depend on the game, platform, localization and software version. These settings can help address mix and presentation problems, but they do not diagnose a hardware fault.
