The Hex takes Warframe into a different medium: a 99-second animated prologue made by Digital Extremes and animation studio THE LINE for Warframe: 1999. Director Venla Linna and creative director Rebecca Ford’s collaboration connects the game’s new setting and characters to a carefully composed 2D short.
How The Hex extends Warframe: 1999
Digital Extremes partnered with THE LINE to make The Hex, with Venla Linna directing. The studio describes the finished film as a 99-second prologue to Warframe: 1999, introducing the Protoframes: Arthur, Aoi, Eleanor, Lettie, Quincy, and Amir. Rather than simply reproducing gameplay in another format, the short gives the setting and cast an animated introduction of their own. Digital Extremes’ production diary details the project and its characters.
Ford has described Höllvania, the setting of Warframe: 1999, as a city on an alternate Earth. She framed the Protoframes as a way to tell more relatable human stories within the game’s science-fiction world. In a separate 2024 interview, she said the team planned to revisit Höllvania and introduce more characters if players responded well to the setting. Ford’s interview with Irrational Passions also discusses the update’s approach to its 1990s setting.
The films and anime behind its visual mood
Linna cited Ghost in the Shell and Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade as influences, especially for mood, color, and grading. Those references help explain why the short leans toward atmosphere and carefully controlled imagery rather than a bright, high-contrast action look.

- No moving parts
In a Creative Bloq interview published December 22, 2024, Linna described naturalistic framing, soft cold glows, lower contrast, desaturation, bloom, and grain as parts of the visual approach. These choices give the images a subdued, filmic texture while maintaining the stylized character designs.
As Linna put it: “Exploring a world like Warframe through 2D animation was an incredibly fulfilling experience. We were immediately drawn to the vastness of the universe that has been built, the depth of its storytelling, and the unapologetic stylishness of its characters.”

Keeping the characters recognizable in 2D
Adapting Warframe’s intricate designs for animation required simplification. Linna said the team aimed to preserve the characters’ individual facial features while making the designs workable to animate. Simplifying details also gave the characters more room in the image, rather than crowding every frame with visual information.
The faces were a particular source of pride for Linna, but consistency across artists was a challenge. The short had to retain a coherent style while multiple artists worked on it—a practical tension between the richness of the original designs and the clarity and repeatability needed for 2D animation. The result is not just a change in medium: it is a selective translation of the characters’ defining traits.

Music and the wider 1999 setting
Ford also said Warframe: 1999 would explore several genres of 1990s music, with five original tracks planned for the update. That detail belongs to the game’s broader setting rather than establishing a soundtrack count for The Hex itself. The interview does not provide audience or performance figures for the short.

The Hex gives Warframe: 1999 a compact animated prologue, using the expressive possibilities of 2D to introduce its Protoframes and alternate-Earth setting. Its visual identity draws on specific anime and film references, while the production’s design work balances recognizable faces against the need to simplify complex characters and keep the animation stylistically unified.
