Warren Spector’s return to game development followed a personal and creative recovery after OtherSide Entertainment’s work on System Shock 3 ended. In 2022, he described starting an original immersive simulation with co-founder Paul Neurath. That project became Argos: Riders on the Storm, which was later cancelled. OtherSide’s latest released game became Thick as Thieves, and Spector announced his retirement in August 2026, while leaving open the possibility of returning.
What happened to Warren Spector and OtherSide’s System Shock 3?
OtherSide worked on System Shock 3 in 2018 and 2019. Spector told GamesBeat the team reached a maximum of about 17 people. He said publisher Tencent was taking the franchise forward and that he had little more to add publicly at the time. His estimate describes the project team, not a general industry figure. GamesBeat’s interview with Spector later provided more context: he had become attached to a core mechanic “to its detriment”; Starbreeze ended external projects after financial trouble; and Tencent said it wanted to take System Shock in a direction OtherSide could not fund on its own. Spector said the development work remained on his hard drive and doubted Tencent would use it.
He did not describe the project’s end as a routine change of jobs. “There was certainly a period of personal recovery. I’m not sure how to say it. I take this personally, you know? Game development is not just a job to me. It took me a while to get my creative juices flowing again. And then COVID hit. The world got crazy.”
How did Spector get back to making games?
The return began with the work itself: Spector and OtherSide co-founder Paul Neurath still loved making games. In the 2022 interview, Spector said the studio was starting an original-IP immersive simulation. His account was not that game development had become easier; rather, the desire to make games persisted through a difficult project ending and the disruption of the pandemic. “It took me a while to get my creative juices flowing again,” he said.

His creative throughline is player agency: systems that let players shape events and find their own approaches, rather than simply follow a fixed sequence. Spector described this as immersive simulation and emergent gameplay. The work, in his telling, is collaborative too. “This is the most intensely team sport I’ve ever experienced,” he said, resisting the idea that one person alone creates the finished game.
What was the new game, and what became of it?
The original-IP project mentioned in 2022 was later identified as Argos. A September 2024 podcast listing described Spector as working on the game under that working title. Game Developer reported in August 2026 that Argos had been cancelled. The available reporting does not establish the internal decision-making behind the cancellation, so it is not possible to say why it ended or how far development had progressed.
OtherSide’s latest released game was Thick as Thieves, released in May 2026. Game Informer’s June 2026 coverage described it as playable solo or cooperatively. It is a separate project from Argos: the former was released, while the latter was an original-IP game that was cancelled. The sources do not establish a player mode for Argos.
What does Spector’s approach say about making games?
Spector’s account emphasizes a willingness to rethink ideas before they harden into expensive commitments. “If you get so attached to something and go so far down the road with it before you realize it doesn’t work, you’re in a world of trouble,” he told GamesBeat. That warning sits alongside his insistence on collaboration: he described a game as something that changes as teammates bring their perspectives, not a singular creator’s fixed design.

His practical advice was equally direct: “Find other people. Don’t try to be a loner.” These comments explain the creative principles he carried into the return, but they should not be mistaken for an account of why Argos was cancelled; the later reporting does not supply that explanation.

In August 2026, Game Developer reported that Spector announced his retirement from game development, while adding, “Never say never” about returning. The report also said he was approaching his 44th year in the industry and had shipped 17 full games, citing his LinkedIn post for those career figures. Retirement is his stated position as reported then, not a claim that he could never work on another game.
