Short answer: a base weapon is the underlying gun and its shared progression track; a blueprint is a named variant of that gun with a distinct appearance and, for the Epic and Legendary examples documented by Activision, a preset attachment build. A blueprint is not a second gun that must be leveled from zero. It uses the same weapon progression, and changing its attachments changes the weapon’s statistics and behavior even when the skin does not visibly change.
Base weapon, blueprint and camo: the terms in plain English
In Call of Duty: Mobile, the base weapon is the platform you unlock and level. Think of the assault rifle, submachine gun, shotgun, sniper rifle or other weapon as the underlying object. Its weapon level, attachment unlocks and progression belong to that platform.

A blueprint is a variant attached to that platform. It can give the gun a different model finish, color scheme, animation treatment or other visual details, and it can present a curated set of attachments when you first equip it. Activision’s Gunsmith explanation says weapon variants share progression with their base weapon, so using a blueprint does not create a separate leveling path. The official walkthrough is from August 11, 2020, so rarity behavior and interface labels should be checked in the current Gunsmith before treating every historical detail as universal. The same documentation distinguishes ordinary variants from blueprint weapons. In that system, Uncommon and Rare variants function as camos tied to the base weapon. Epic and Legendary variants are Blueprint weapons: they carry their own camo and a curated attachment setup. That is why players sometimes ask, “What’s the difference between a blueprint and a camo?” A camo changes the weapon’s presentation; a documented Epic or Legendary blueprint combines a presentation change with a starting build. The exact rarity taxonomy can change in a live-service game, so use the current item description as the final authority.

How progression works when you use a blueprint
One weapon level track
Activision’s Gunsmith walkthrough states that primary and secondary variants share progression with their base weapon. If you have already leveled the base gun, its available attachment progression is not replaced by equipping a variant. Conversely, using a blueprint contributes to the same weapon platform rather than creating a second experience bar that must be completed independently.
This matters when you switch between a standard appearance and a blueprint. The visual item may be different, but the game still treats both as versions of the same weapon family for progression purposes. You can therefore choose a blueprint for its look or starting configuration without giving up the work invested in the base weapon.
Unlocks and loadout access
Activision’s loadout support documentation explains that Multiplayer loadouts contain primary and secondary weapons, optics and attachments, with some slots and items unlocking as you progress and level up. The exact menu names can move between updates, but the practical relationship remains: the weapon platform and its unlocked Gunsmith options determine what you can configure, while the blueprint supplies a variant appearance and, where applicable, a preset arrangement.

A blueprint cannot bypass an attachment requirement merely because its skin is rare or elaborate.
What a blueprint changes—and what it does not
Visual identity
The most obvious difference is cosmetic. A blueprint can replace the ordinary finish with a themed design and can use visually distinctive parts. The item’s name, thumbnail and in-match model identify the variant you selected. This visual treatment is separate from whether the gun is statistically suitable for your play style.

A curated starting build
For the Epic and Legendary examples in Activision’s August 2020 guide, the blueprint is not just a skin: it comes with preset attachments. The guide specifies four attachments for Epic blueprints and five for Legendary blueprints. Those counts describe the documented system at that time, not a guaranteed rule for every blueprint in the current game. Current item cards and the Gunsmith screen take precedence if an update uses a different count or rarity structure.
A preset is a starting configuration, not a promise that it is the best possible build. The designer may be aiming for a particular range, handling profile or theme. You can usually replace attachments in Gunsmith, subject to the same unlock and slot rules that apply to the associated weapon.
What remains the same
The blueprint does not turn the platform into a different weapon class, create an independent progression track or automatically make every shot stronger. Its performance comes from the weapon platform and the attachments currently equipped. Cosmetic rarity alone is not evidence of superior damage, accuracy or mobility.
Attachments determine the practical performance
Attachments are where the functional trade-offs occur. Activision illustrates this with two simple examples in its Gunsmith guide:
- A larger magazine increases ammunition capacity but can reduce movement speed.
- A bright laser can improve hip-fire accuracy while making the player easier to spot.
Those examples show why a blueprint’s preset should be evaluated rather than accepted blindly. A close-range player may value faster handling and hip-fire control, while a player holding longer sight lines may prefer recoil control, range or a larger magazine despite a mobility cost. The blueprint’s theme does not remove those trade-offs.

When you swap an attachment, judge the result by the statistics and by how the weapon behaves in a match. Do not assume that an attachment is inactive because the model still looks unchanged. Activision explicitly warns that some blueprints may not visually show attachment changes, while the weapon’s statistics and behavior still reflect the selected attachments.
How to inspect and customize a blueprint
Menu labels can vary by update, but the workflow follows the loadout and Gunsmith structure described in Activision’s support documentation.
- Open the mode’s Loadout screen. For Multiplayer, choose the loadout slot containing the weapon you want to edit.
- Select the primary or secondary weapon slot, then choose the base weapon family associated with the blueprint.
- Select the blueprint or variant from the available weapon entries. Confirm that the displayed item is the variant you intend to use, not merely a camo applied to the standard model.
- Open Gunsmith or the attachment-editing option. Review every equipped slot and the displayed weapon statistics.
- Replace a preset attachment only after checking its unlock status and the effect shown in the Gunsmith panel. Consider mobility, accuracy, range, recoil, ammunition and visibility together rather than maximizing one bar.
- Save or equip the loadout, then verify the weapon in the mode where you plan to play. A visual model may not reveal every functional change, so the selected attachment list and statistics are the reliable checks.
If the attachment menu does not show a slot, that can be an unlock or version issue rather than proof that the blueprint is defective. Level the associated base weapon, check whether the item is restricted to a particular mode, and reopen the current Gunsmith screen after the game finishes applying an update.
Why the blueprint’s appearance can be misleading
Blueprint art can make it difficult to identify the active build. A skin may retain a distinctive magazine, barrel or optic shape even after you select a different attachment, or it may visually mask the change altogether. The reverse is also possible: a dramatic visual part may be part of the blueprint’s cosmetic treatment rather than a separate performance advantage.
Use the attachment list and statistics—not a screenshot of the gun—as the source of truth. This distinction is especially important when comparing a blueprint with the plain base weapon. Two guns can look different while using the same functional setup, and two guns that look nearly identical can have different attachment selections.

How blueprints are obtained
There is no permanent, single acquisition route for every blueprint. Availability follows the game’s seasonal content and the specific item’s listing. The official Season 8 announcement, dated September 2, 2026, provides a current example rather than a timeless rule. It describes blueprint rewards through seasonal events and Battle Pass tiers, Ground Forces subscription rewards and Draws. It also describes a free Mythic weapon event and notes that Mythic upgrades are sold separately. See the Season 8 — Against All Fate announcement for those announced routes.
Because events, tiers, subscriptions and Draws rotate, an item available in Season 8 may not return in the same form later. Do not infer a price, drop rate or future availability from the announcement; it does not establish those details. Check the current in-game event, Battle Pass, subscription or Draw description for the item’s live conditions.

Use the base weapon when you want control
- You want to build the weapon around a specific role instead of accepting a preset.
- You are still unlocking attachments and want a clear view of the platform’s progression.
- You prefer a standard appearance or plan to apply a separate camo.
Use a blueprint when you want its identity or a head start
- You like the blueprint’s visual design or themed model.
- Its preset attachments suit your immediate play style.
- You want a ready-made configuration while you continue leveling the same base weapon.
Modify either one when the role demands it
A blueprint is a starting point, not a permanent restriction. If its magazine slows you too much, its optic does not suit your sight picture or its laser exposes your position, replace the part if the game allows it. The associated base weapon’s progression and the current attachment rules determine what you can equip.

Common misconceptions and fixes
“A blueprint is a separate gun.”
It is a variant of the associated base weapon. Activision’s documented system shares progression between the variant and the base platform, so do not expect a fresh weapon-level track.

“Legendary automatically means better statistics.”
Rarity describes the item’s classification and presentation; it is not, by itself, proof of higher damage or accuracy. Inspect the actual attachments and statistics.
“If the model did not change, the attachment did not apply.”
Some blueprints do not visually display attachment changes. The selected attachment list and Gunsmith statistics are more reliable than the model’s appearance.
“A camo and a blueprint are interchangeable terms.”
In Activision’s documented rarity breakdown, Uncommon and Rare variants are camos tied to the base weapon, while Epic and Legendary variants are blueprints with their own camo and preset attachments. Individual updates can revise labels, so confirm the current item description.

Those numbers come from Activision’s August 2020 Gunsmith walkthrough: four preset attachments for Epic examples and five for Legendary examples. They should be treated as historical documented behavior unless the current Gunsmith confirms the same rule.
What to check after an update
Call of Duty: Mobile is a live service, and the most detailed official mechanics guide cited here is from 2020. Before relying on an older explanation, open the blueprint in the current Gunsmith and check:
- Which rarity label and item type the game currently assigns to it.
- How many attachment slots are actually populated.
- Whether each preset part can be replaced and which attachments are unlocked.
- Whether the displayed statistics change when you swap a part.
- Whether the item is available through the current season’s event, Battle Pass, subscription or Draw, rather than an expired promotion.
The durable rule is straightforward: the base weapon supplies the shared platform and progression; the blueprint supplies a variant presentation and, where documented, a preset build; your currently equipped attachments determine the practical behavior.
