Use the Warband Bank for your own characters’ gold, the currency interface for eligible currencies, the Auction House for market transactions, and the WoW Token exchange for converting real-money Tokens and gold into game time. These systems are separate. Their rules differ by account relationship, realm, faction, region, item type, and whether Blizzard has documented a restriction.
The practical catch is that Warbands have a clearly documented region-wide scope, while a current, official matrix for ordinary mail and direct player-to-player trade is not established here. Treat historical mail notes as historical context, not as a complete description of the current game.

How Warband gold transfers work
Blizzard describes a Warband as covering the characters on a player’s Battle.net account, together with shared items, collections, and progression. The documented scope is one region: characters can be on different realms and can belong to different factions, but the description does not make Warband data global across regions. See Blizzard’s Warbands preview for the stated scope.

Move gold to an alt with the Warband Bank
- Go to a bank that provides access to the Warband Bank in the current game client.
- Deposit the gold from the character that currently owns it. Blizzard’s feature announcement specifically describes depositing gold into the Warband Bank and manually withdrawing it on another Warband character; it does not describe an automatically merged character wallet. The announcement is Get the Band Together for Warbands.
- Log onto the receiving character in the same region and open the Warband Bank.
- Withdraw the required amount. Check the displayed balance and confirmation before closing the bank window.
This is the cleanest documented method for sending gold to your own cross-realm or cross-faction alt, provided both characters belong to the same Warband region. It is not a way to move gold between separate Battle.net regions.
What the Warband Bank does not imply
The Warband Bank also stores non-soulbound items and provides bank tabs, but that does not mean every currency becomes a shared gold-like balance. Gold storage and currency transfer are separate features. A currency can be usable by one character while remaining unavailable to another, even when both characters are in the same Warband.
How Warband currency transfers differ from gold
Blizzard says shareable currencies can be transferred between Warband characters through the currency interface. It also warns that many currencies remain non-transferable because they represent character-based progression. Some currencies intended for a character’s primary use may permit a transfer with a loss. Those qualifications appear in the official Warbands preview.
Transfer an eligible currency
- Open the character’s currency interface.
- Select the currency and look for the available Warband transfer control.
- Choose the destination character from the Warband list.
- Read the confirmation carefully. If the interface shows a reduced amount or a conversion loss, the transfer is not one-for-one.
- Confirm, then check the destination character’s currency total.
If no transfer control appears, that is evidence that the currency is not currently eligible for that destination or that the client’s rules have changed. Do not try to simulate a currency transfer by mailing or trading an unrelated item; those are different systems.
Mail and direct player trade: what is known and what is not
Mail and the trade window are often treated as interchangeable ways to hand over gold, but they have different interfaces and eligibility checks. The available official material does not establish a current, complete table covering ordinary mail and direct trade by realm, faction, account relationship, gold amount, or item type. For a high-value transfer, use the rule shown by the current client or confirm the current restriction with Blizzard Support before committing the transaction.
Historical cross-realm mail rule
Blizzard’s September 10, 2013 Patch 5.4 notes recorded that cross-realm mail could send account-bound items to another character on the same account, but not other items or gold. That note is useful historical context. It is not a complete statement of current mail behavior, and it should not be used to infer every modern Warband, account, faction, or realm rule.
Historical confirmation dialog
Patch 7.1 notes documented a confirmation dialog when sending gold or items through mail and trade. The note confirms a user-interface safeguard, not a current eligibility limit. Read every confirmation in the present client rather than assuming the old dialog’s rules still apply. The historical note is World of Warcraft 7.1 patch notes.

Practical checks before mailing or trading
- Confirm the exact character name, realm, and faction shown by the recipient selector.
- Check whether the item is soulbound, account-bound, or otherwise restricted.
- Verify the gold amount in the final confirmation window.
- For a cross-realm or cross-faction attempt, make a small test transaction first when the client permits one.
- Keep the transaction record or screenshots if the amount is significant.
These checks reduce mistakes, but they do not create eligibility where the current game rules do not allow the transaction.

Using the regular Auction House to move value
The regular Auction House is a market: one character lists an item, another player buys it, and the seller receives the sale proceeds under the current Auction House rules. It is not a direct gold-transfer button and it is not the Warband Bank.
When an Auction House sale makes sense
- You need to sell an item to an unrelated player rather than fund your own alt.
- The characters cannot use a documented Warband route, but you have a legitimate, marketable item.
- You want a price determined by current supply and demand instead of a direct handoff.
Why it is a poor substitute for an alt transfer
Listing an item introduces market risk. The item may not sell, the final price may differ from your expectation, and the interface may apply the applicable deposit or commission rules. Buying your own listing with another character is also subject to the Auction House’s current purchase and account rules; it should not be treated as a guaranteed private transfer. If both characters are yours and in the same Warband region, the Warband Bank is the documented first choice for gold.
How the WoW Token turns gold into game time
The WoW Token exchange is separate from ordinary mail, direct trade, and the regular Auction House. Blizzard describes a regional Token market whose price changes with supply and demand. The WoW Token FAQ explains the two directions.
Buy a Token with gold
- Open the WoW Token interface and review the currently displayed regional gold price.
- Confirm the purchase with the character that has the required gold.
- Blizzard says the purchased Token is delivered through the mailbox.
- Redeem the Token for game time using the option shown in the Token interface.
A Token bought for gold becomes soulbound. Blizzard’s FAQ states, “No, each WoW Token can only be sold once.” In practical terms, it cannot be resold or passed through the regular Auction House after that purchase.

List a shop-purchased Token
When a Token bought with real money is listed, Blizzard quotes a gold amount. The amount is locked once the Token is listed, according to the FAQ. The seller is therefore accepting the displayed regional exchange value rather than waiting for a later market movement on that individual listing.
Do not confuse Token value with a live price
Token pricing is dynamic. No live regional price is stated here, so check the current Token interface in your region before planning a purchase. A price seen in an old guide, screenshot, or forum post may no longer apply.

The most reliable boundary in the documented rules is the Warband’s region. Cross-realm and cross-faction characters can belong to one Warband within that region, while the Warbands preview does not promise cross-region sharing. Keep these cases separate:
| Situation | Best documented interpretation |
|---|---|
| Your own characters, different realms, same region | Use the Warband Bank for gold and the currency interface for currencies marked transferable. |
| Your own characters, opposite factions, same region | Faction is not presented as a Warband barrier; use the same documented Warband routes if the client lists both characters. |
| Your own characters in different regions | Do not assume Warband sharing. The documented description is region-limited. |
| Another player on an uncertain realm or faction combination | Check the current mail and trade eligibility in-game; no complete current official matrix is established here. |
| Gold exchanged for game time | Use the regional WoW Token market, not mail or direct trade. |
Historical WoW Token limits: date them before relying on them
Blizzard’s July 23, 2015 update listed the following limits. They are historical figures from that update, not verified current limits:
Best Value
| Historical rule | Figure in the July 23, 2015 update | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Tokens purchased with real money for sale on the Auction House | 10 per week | Blizzard Entertainment, 2015; historical limit |
| Tokens purchased with gold | 36 per 24 months | Blizzard Entertainment, 2015; historical limit |
| Tokens held in inventory across the Battle.net account | 10 | Blizzard Entertainment, 2015; historical limit |
Because the current status of those limits is not established by the available documentation, do not plan a present-day purchase around them. Check the current Token interface or current Blizzard support guidance for any limit that matters to your account. The historical update is WoW Token – Additional Details.
Troubleshooting a failed gold transfer
The receiving character is missing
Check that both characters are on the same regional Battle.net grouping and that you are using the Warband character list, not an ordinary mail recipient list. A different region is outside the documented Warband scope.
The currency has no transfer option
The currency may be intentionally character-bound. Blizzard specifically says many progression currencies remain non-transferable. If a transfer is offered with a reduced amount, the loss is part of that currency’s documented design.

Mail or trade is rejected
Do not infer the reason from the old Patch 5.4 or 7.1 notes. Recheck the current recipient, item binding, realm, faction, and account details, then consult current in-game messaging or Blizzard Support for the applicable rule.
The Token price is different from a guide
Token prices move with regional supply and demand. Use the live price displayed by the Token interface and treat archived prices as obsolete.
Bottom line for moving WoW gold
For your own characters, deposit gold in the Warband Bank and withdraw it on the destination character. Use the currency interface only when the specific currency is marked transferable, and expect that some transfers can lose value. Use the regular Auction House for genuine item sales, not as a guaranteed private wallet. Use the WoW Token exchange when the goal is game time, remembering that a Token bought for gold becomes soulbound. Ordinary mail and direct trade require the most caution: historical notes do not establish a complete current rule set, so trust the present client and current official support for those cases.
