Xbox One can play selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games; Xbox Series X|S can play selected titles from those generations plus most Xbox One games. Which Xbox games can you play on newer consoles?
Compatibility depends on the individual game. Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles as well as most Xbox One games. That does not mean every game from those generations works.

The official catalog groups games by generation and offers filters for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox titles. Search for the specific game you want rather than assuming a title is supported because another game in its series is. The catalog is the best place to verify current support before buying a digital copy or tracking down a disc.
Think of backward compatibility as a title-by-title permission, not a blanket promise about a console generation. A game being an Xbox 360 release, for example, does not by itself establish that it will run on Xbox One or Series X|S. Nor does a playable entry in a series automatically confirm that every sequel or edition is supported. Check the name of the exact game you plan to play, then make sure you are looking at the right generation and version in the catalog.

The catalog is especially useful before spending money on an older physical copy: a disc is useful for backward compatibility only if that particular title is supported. Likewise, owning a digital game does not make an unsupported game playable. The title check and the ownership check are separate steps.
Examples from Xbox’s 2021 additions
On November 15, 2021, Xbox announced more than 70 Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games for the catalog, including games from the Max Payne series, the F.E.A.R. franchise, Skate 2, Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II, Star Wars: Starfighter, and the Otogi franchise. Xbox said these additions could be played on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S digitally or from disc. These are examples from that announcement, not a substitute for checking the live catalog for a title’s current status.
Xbox described the November 2021 release as the “latest and final addition” to its backward-compatibility program, saying it had reached the limit of its ability to add past games because of licensing, legal, and technical constraints. That statement reflects Xbox’s position on November 15, 2021; the sources cited here do not establish whether it has changed since.

How to play a compatible game
Digital games you own
If the game is compatible and your account owns it, it should appear in the console’s Ready to Install area. Select it there to download and install it. Backward compatibility does not add a separate fee for a game you already own, but it does not make an unsupported title compatible or provide a game you have not acquired.
The practical sequence is simple: confirm the title is supported, sign in with the account that owns the digital game, and look in Ready to Install. If the game is not owned by that account, compatibility alone will not supply a license. Xbox says many games from its previously owned catalog are included in Game Pass, but that is not confirmation that a particular game is currently included. Check the current subscription catalog before relying on it.
Games on disc
- Check that the exact game appears in the backward-compatible catalog.
- On a console with a disc drive, insert the supported game disc. The console downloads the game data.
- Keep the disc in the drive whenever you play. The disc is still required after installation.
A disc alone does not guarantee compatibility: unsupported titles will not become playable just because they can be inserted into the console.

- The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces dynamic characters, fresh puzzle elements, and a larger set of devious test chambers
- The two-player mode features a separate campaign with unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters.
- Advanced use of physics allow for the creation of a whole new range of interesting challenges, producing a much larger but not harder game.
- A massive sequel to the title named 2007's Game of the Year by over 30 publications worldwide.
- Players explore areas of the Aperture Science Labs and reunite with GLaDOS, the murderous computer companion.
Installation and authorization are different parts of the disc process. The console downloads the game data, but the physical disc remains necessary to play; installing a disc game does not turn it into a digital copy. If you are choosing between a digital purchase and a used disc, consider whether the console has a drive and whether you want to keep using that disc as your proof of ownership.
Choosing a console for physical games
Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical game discs. If you want to use Xbox 360 or Original Xbox discs, choose an Xbox configuration with a disc drive and verify the exact console model and game support before purchasing. Digital ownership and disc playback are separate paths: a disc copy does not turn into a digital license for a console without a drive.
That makes the choice depend on both your game library and how you own it. A digital-only setup can work for compatible games you own digitally, while a player relying on an older physical collection needs a disc-drive configuration. Do not infer disc support just from the Series X|S family name: verify the particular console configuration as well as the game.
What changes on Xbox Series X|S?
Some compatible games can benefit from features such as FPS Boost, resolution enhancements, and Auto HDR. Auto HDR can enhance older games originally presented in standard dynamic range when used with a supported display. Availability varies by game; compatibility by itself does not promise a higher resolution, a higher frame rate, or HDR.
These are distinct benefits rather than a single upgrade that applies to every game. FPS Boost addresses frame rate; resolution enhancements affect image resolution; Auto HDR can add an HDR presentation to an older SDR game on a supported display. A particular compatible game may have one of these features, more than one, or none. If a visual or performance upgrade is the reason you are choosing a game, verify support for that specific feature and title.
Xbox’s November 2021 announcement gave more specific figures for that batch of additions. It said all the newly added titles would receive Auto HDR on supported displays, many would receive resolution enhancements, and 11 additions would get FPS Boost that doubled the original frame rate up to 60 frames per second. Xbox also said 26 games already in the catalog were enabled for FPS Boost that day.
The same announcement described resolution multipliers for Original Xbox games on supported displays: 4× on Xbox Series X and Xbox One X, 3× on Xbox Series S, and 2× on Xbox One S and Xbox One. These are figures from the 2021 announcement, not a guarantee that every compatible game receives those enhancements. For a particular title, check its feature support rather than assuming all improvements apply.

Those figures also belong to different console models and the Original Xbox games described in that announcement; they are not a universal resolution setting for all backward-compatible games. Treat the announcement as a dated report of Xbox’s work on those titles, not a general promise about any game you might install later.
Xbox says it conducted 500,000 hours of testing and quality-standard work for Series X|S backward compatibility. The current Xbox overview that reports this figure does not give it a publication year, so it should be understood as Xbox’s stated program figure rather than a dated measure for a specific game.
Original Xbox features that do not carry over
Backward-compatible Original Xbox games run as the original games, not as remasters. Some original-era features and data do not carry forward to newer consoles:
- Original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility.
- Offline multiplayer and system link work only if the original game supported them.
- Original Xbox titles do not gain Xbox achievements through backward compatibility.
- Original Xbox saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Saves created on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud.
Check these limits before choosing a game for online play, achievement hunting, or continuing an old save. The fact that a title launches on a newer console does not restore services or data-transfer options that are unavailable.
In particular, separate the original save from a save made after playing on a newer console. An old Original Xbox save cannot be carried over to Xbox One or Series X|S, while saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those newer consoles through the cloud. Likewise, backward compatibility does not bring back the original Xbox Live multiplayer service or an in-game marketplace. Offline multiplayer and system link are possible only where the original game itself supported them.

Choose based on how you want to play
- For an owned digital game: Confirm the title is in the catalog and that the account you use owns it; then look in Ready to Install.
- For an old physical disc: Verify title support and use a console configuration with a disc drive. Series S cannot play discs.
- For a specific Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game: Search the official catalog before buying. Support is title-by-title.
- For better visuals or frame rate: Confirm that the game itself supports FPS Boost, a resolution enhancement, or Auto HDR. These features are not universal.
- For Original Xbox online play, achievements, or old saves: Check the limitations above before expecting those features to work on a newer console.
Put the checks in this order when comparing a console or a game purchase: first confirm that the exact title is supported; next decide whether you will play through digital ownership or a disc; then match that choice to an account or a console with a disc drive. If a better frame rate, higher resolution, or HDR matters, check that feature separately. This avoids paying for a disc you cannot use on a digital-only console, or assuming an enhancement or legacy service comes with compatibility.
Xbox says many games from its previously owned catalog are included in Game Pass, but availability can vary by title and over time. Check the current subscription catalog for the game you want rather than assuming it is included.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play any Xbox 360 or Original Xbox game on Xbox Series X|S?
No. Xbox Series X|S plays selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, as well as most Xbox One games. Check the exact older title in Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog before buying or installing it.
Do I need to pay extra to play a compatible game I already own?
Xbox describes backward compatibility as free for games you already own, so there is no separate compatibility fee. You still need to own or acquire the game, and an unsupported title will not become playable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can Xbox Series S play Xbox 360 or Original Xbox discs?
No. Series S is digital-only and has no physical disc playback. For an older disc, check that the game is supported and use a console configuration with a disc drive.
Do I need to keep a compatible game disc in the console after installation?
Yes. The console downloads the game data from a supported disc, but you must keep the disc in the drive to play. A disc does not make an unsupported title compatible.
Do backward-compatible games always get better graphics or frame rates?
No. FPS Boost, resolution enhancements, and Auto HDR vary by title. Check the specific game’s feature support; compatibility alone does not guarantee any of these improvements.
Can I use original Xbox Live multiplayer, achievements, or old saves?
Original Xbox Live multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility, and Original Xbox games do not gain Xbox achievements. Original Xbox saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S, though saves made on Xbox One or Series X|S can move between those consoles through the cloud.

The Bottom Line
Backward compatibility is useful when the exact game you want is supported and you have the right way to access it: a digital license or a disc-drive console for a supported disc. Check the catalog before buying, and treat enhancements and Original Xbox feature support as title-specific rather than automatic.
