Yes—if the specific game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, you can continue its progress across supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and handhelds. Use the same Xbox account (gamertag) on each device, connect to the internet, and let the save sync finish before switching devices. Play Anywhere is title-specific, and a save may not be current on the second device until synchronization completes.
What carries over with Xbox Play Anywhere?
For participating digital games, Xbox says progress—including saves, add-ons and achievements—carries between supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and handhelds. Progress is associated with your gamertag, so sign into the same Xbox account on each device. Microsoft’s usage rules describe support across compatible Windows devices and Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles; check the specific game’s listing for its supported platforms.
Xbox reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games in its July 28, 2025 update. That is a dated catalog count, not a live total; the eligible library can change. Xbox Wire’s July 2025 update describes the feature and catalog at that time.
How save syncing works
Microsoft’s Game Saves documentation describes saves as stored locally on a device and synchronized to the cloud when that device connects to the internet. In practice, the first device needs to upload its latest progress before another device can download and use it. Cloud saves are not a promise of instant, simultaneous updates, particularly if you have played offline.

- On the first device, connect to the internet and allow the game to sync its save before closing or moving to another device.
- On the second supported device, sign into the same Xbox account and launch the game.
- If the game or platform shows a sync status or prompt, wait for synchronization to complete before continuing.
There is no universal sync time published in the cited Xbox and Microsoft documentation. How long it takes can depend on the game, connection and whether the device has been offline.
Check whether your game and version qualify
- Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere designation on the current Xbox listing for the exact game. Support is title-specific; owning or playing an Xbox game does not by itself mean its progress transfers to PC.
- Make sure the installed version is the compatible Xbox or Windows version. Do not assume that a version from every PC storefront shares Play Anywhere saves.
- Use the same Xbox account on both devices. A different account will not be the same gamertag to which the progress is tied.
Xbox describes Play Anywhere purchases as playable across supported devices at no additional cost. Game Pass can provide access to supported games, but a subscription is not required for the save-sync feature when you already have the qualifying digital game entitlement. Check save status on PC and handhelds
In a January 21, 2026 announcement, Xbox described a Game Save Sync Indicator for PC and handheld play. Xbox said the indicator provides “real-time visibility into your cloud save status” so players can see when progress is synced. Availability can depend on the device and rollout, so its absence does not establish that a title cannot sync. See Xbox Wire’s announcement for the feature details.
What to do if local and cloud saves conflict
A conflict can occur when both the device’s local save and the cloud copy have changed. Microsoft’s developer documentation confirms that games may need to handle this situation, but the exact prompt and options can vary by game.

- Read the prompt and compare any displayed timestamps or progress details before choosing a copy.
- If one option clearly reflects your latest progress, select it only after checking that it is the version you want to keep.
- If you cannot tell which copy is newer, avoid choosing an option that could overwrite the progress you want. The documentation does not establish a universal recovery method.
What you need—and what you do not
The documented requirements are a supported game, compatible devices, the same Xbox account and a connection that lets saves synchronize. Xbox and Microsoft do not identify a separate controller, router, storage drive or other hardware accessory as a requirement for Play Anywhere save syncing.
