For eligible public live streams, YouTube’s standard Watch Page deal pays the creator 55% of net ad revenue—not 55% of every potential ad impression or a guaranteed amount per stream. Actual ad delivery and earnings vary. Fan funding such as memberships and Super Chat is separate and uses a different published share.
What does YouTube’s 55% live ad share mean?
YouTube says creators receive 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page after accepting the Watch Page Monetization Module. The published rate also applies when public videos are played in the YouTube Video Player on other sites or apps. The calculation is based on qualifying net ad revenue, not gross advertiser spend or every opportunity to show an ad. Transaction taxes such as sales tax, VAT, and GST are excluded from Google’s revenue for this calculation.
The applicable terms are those in your own partner agreement. Check the monetization modules and terms accepted in YouTube Studio; the published standard should not be treated as a substitute for your account’s agreement. YouTube’s partner earnings overview explains its published shares and agreement caveat.
Why 55% does not predict a stream’s payout
A stream must be eligible and monetized, and an ad slot must actually serve, before it can contribute Watch Page ad revenue. YouTube’s live-stream guidance is explicit: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” YouTube’s systems decide which slots receive ads, so two streams—or two viewers of the same stream—may produce different ad experiences and revenue. Some viewers may not receive an ad; viewers who do see one return to the stream after it ends or is skipped.

Which ads can appear during a live stream?
Pre-roll and display ads
When live-stream monetization is enabled, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Pre-roll runs before a viewer joins; display inventory may appear alongside the stream experience. Their appearance and delivery are not guaranteed for every viewer.

Mid-roll ads
Mid-rolls can appear during an eligible live stream as full-screen or side-by-side ads. Streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads. You can use automatic placement, schedule breaks, or insert them manually through the Live Control Room.
| Placement method | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube places mid-rolls at natural breakpoints. You can choose low, medium, or high frequency. | YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls. Placement is managed by YouTube, and ad serving remains uncertain. |
| Scheduled | Set breaks every 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | Scheduled placement may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode and can interrupt viewers at a set interval. |
| Manual | Insert a break from the Live Control Room when you choose. | Offers timing control, but requires you to manage breaks; ad delivery is still not guaranteed. |
| No mid-roll breaks | If you manually choose no breaks, YouTube will not serve mid-rolls. | Avoids mid-stream ad breaks, but also forgoes mid-roll opportunities. |
Automatic mode includes measures YouTube says limit interruptions for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze ads during high-engagement moments. From the Live Control Room, you can delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes; a manual ad already placed still displays during that delay. Details can change, so consult the current live-stream ad controls before a broadcast.

YouTube reported an “Over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour” for channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled compared with channels without the feature, across 207 countries in January 2024. This is YouTube’s reported average comparison for that period, not a promise or forecast for an individual channel.
Live ad revenue is different from fan funding
YouTube publishes a 70% share of net revenue for channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks when the relevant Commerce Product Module and features are enabled. That is a separate revenue stream and calculation from the 55% Watch Page ad share. Do not add the percentages together or use the fan-funding rate to describe live ad revenue.

Shopping is another live monetization option for eligible YouTube Partner Program creators, but there is no universal Shopping share rate established here. Sponsorships and merchandise are also distinct from YouTube Watch Page ad revenue. See YouTube’s partner earnings overview, module eligibility details, and YouTube’s live monetization options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check what your live streams actually earned
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics for your channel or video.
- Use the Live filter to view live-stream and replay ad revenue. YouTube’s guidance says live revenue can be broken out this way.
- Compare results across streams and periods, accounting for differences in audience, ad delivery, eligibility, and viewing conditions rather than treating one stream’s result as a fixed rate.
Do not confuse analytics metrics with the contractual share. YouTube defines CPM as an advertiser-focused cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. RPM is creator-focused, reflects revenue after the share, and can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. RPM therefore is not the same thing as the 55% Watch Page ad rate. See YouTube’s definitions of RPM and CPM and its live revenue Analytics guidance.
