Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn YouTube Studio, open Analytics, choose the Content tab, filter for Live, and read the How viewers find your live streams report. It shows the sources YouTube attributes to your live-stream views—such as Browse features, YouTube Search, Suggested videos, External, and Direct or unknown. Compare the same date ranges and pair source mix with impressions, click-through rate, views, and average view duration; a source label describes attributed traffic, not what caused a change.
Where to find the traffic-source report
- Open YouTube Studio and select Analytics.
- Choose the Content tab and filter for Live. Confirm you are looking at live content rather than videos or Shorts.
- Find “How viewers find your live streams.” Select a date range and note it before recording or comparing results.
- Open relevant source cards for detail. Depending on the source and available data, you may be able to inspect search terms, suggested videos, playlists, or external sites.
YouTube Help describes this report as showing how viewers found live streams across Browse features, YouTube Search, Suggested videos, Direct or unknown, Channel pages, and other sources: Understand your YouTube content performance. The Studio interface may vary by account: YouTube says an updated Analytics experience is rolling out gradually from July 2026, and its help page notes that some Analytics data can be limited (Get started with YouTube Analytics).
What each traffic source means
These categories are attribution labels. They tell you where YouTube classifies traffic, not necessarily the exact path or reason behind every view.
| Source | What YouTube includes | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Browse features | Home, subscriptions, Watch Later, Trending/Explore, and other browsing features. | A rise means more views were attributed to YouTube browsing surfaces. This category alone does not identify which surface drove the change. |
| YouTube Search | Views from YouTube Search results. | Inspect search terms when available. They show queries associated with attributed discovery; they do not prove every viewer used the same query. |
| Suggested videos | Recommendations next to or after other videos, plus links in video descriptions. | Review the specific videos listed in the Suggested videos card when available. |
| Playlists | Any playlist containing one of your channel’s videos, including another creator’s playlist and users’ Liked videos or Favorites. | Check which playlists appear before drawing conclusions about playlist placement. |
| Channel pages | Your channel page or other YouTube channels’ pages. | This identifies channel-page traffic, but does not by itself distinguish your channel from other channels. |
| External | Websites and apps that embed or link to the video. | Inspect listed sites or apps when available. External means attributed referral or embed traffic, not all traffic from unidentified apps. |
| Direct or unknown | Direct URL entry, bookmarks, signed-out viewers, and unidentified apps. | Keep the label intact: it combines known direct-access patterns with traffic YouTube cannot identify. Do not relabel the entire category as external referrals. |
| Notifications | Notifications and emails to subscribers, including notifications to subscribers with all notifications enabled and other app notifications. | Read this as notification-attributed traffic; YouTube names distinct notification groupings. |
| Other categories | Depending on content and report context, rows can also include Shorts, End screens, Video cards, YouTube advertising, Product pages, and Other YouTube features. | Rows shown can depend on the content and report context. |

How to interpret source mix for a continuous stream
Read shares as attribution, not causation
A larger share from Search, Browse, or Suggested tells you that more of the selected period’s attributed views came through that category. It does not establish why traffic changed or prove that a particular thumbnail, playlist, or promotion caused the change. YouTube recommends looking at top sources, search terms, and patterns among more popular live streams (Content tab analytics tips – Live).
Pair discovery with exposure and viewing depth
- Impressions: Thumbnail displays on YouTube. Impressions exclude displays on external websites and apps.
- Impressions click-through rate: How often people watched after seeing the thumbnail, as described in YouTube’s Live analytics guidance.
- Views: The view count reported for the chosen period and content.
- Average view duration: A viewing-depth measure to consider alongside discovery and views.
For example, a change in Browse-attributed views is more informative when considered alongside thumbnail impressions, CTR, and average view duration. YouTube recommends comparing like content formats because audience behavior differs by format; avoid treating a live stream and a different format as directly equivalent.

Use consistent periods and record operational context
Choose equivalent date ranges when comparing periods or streams. Note separately any changes you made to stream packaging, playlist placement, channel promotion, or external embeds. Those notes provide context for interpreting a change, but Analytics attribution alone does not establish a causal link.
YouTube’s help materials do not specify special attribution behavior for 24/7 streams, explain how stream restarts affect attribution, or prescribe an ideal interval for evaluating an always-on broadcast. Treat those points as unknown rather than assuming that a restart resets or preserves a source category in a particular way. If you track restarts or operational segments yourself, label them using your own records; that is a creator workflow, not a feature documented for the report.

A practical workflow for diagnosing traffic changes
- Set the scope. In Content Analytics, select Live, choose the date range, and confirm the content selection before comparing results.
- Record source mix. Note the main categories and their view contribution for that period.
- Drill into available details. Check search terms, suggested videos, playlists, and external sites in the relevant cards when YouTube provides them.
- Add performance context. Compare source mix with impressions, impressions CTR, views, and average view duration. Keep the content format and date windows comparable.
- Look for repeatable changes. Compare equivalent periods rather than treating one count or one fluctuation as an explanation. Keep promotion, playlist, embed, or packaging changes in separate notes.
- State data limits plainly. If a detail is missing or sparse, report that YouTube may limit some Analytics data. Its cited guidance does not give a universal numeric cutoff for traffic-source detail.
Why Live Control Room numbers may differ
YouTube distinguishes Analytics data from Live Control Room measurements. Its live-metrics guidance says video-level Analytics metrics are based on the Video ID after processing and despamming, and that the two measurement contexts are not interchangeable. The page says those video-level metrics become available within minutes after a stream ends; do not treat a Live Control Room real-time figure as if it were the processed Analytics report (See your live stream’s metrics).
For a 24/7 broadcast, the cited guidance describes post-stream availability but does not establish a special continuous-stream refresh or attribution rule. Use the selected Analytics report for its stated period and be clear about which measurement you are discussing.
