Zach Cregger’s 2026 Resident Evil film brings game-like perspective and play structure to the screen: a shifting third-person follow camera tracks its protagonist, first-person weapon-mounted shots put viewers closer to the action, and a new journey through Raccoon City echoes the resource pressure and changing dangers of the games. It draws particularly on the world of Resident Evil 2 without retelling that game’s plot.
How the camera makes the movie feel game-like
The most direct link to the games is the film’s shifting third-person follow-camera perspective. Cregger describes using a wide lens to keep the world visible around a protagonist who stays near the center of the frame. The actor and camera operator move in sync, so the view seems to follow where the character directs their attention.
“Having that third-person view that is constantly shifting as the character is shifting their attention is really immersive,” Cregger told PetaPixel in an interview at San Diego Comic-Con. His aim is not simply to make the film resemble gameplay in a still image; the camera’s movement is meant to make the audience feel connected to the character’s changing focus.
The film also shifts into first-person views. PetaPixel reports that small cameras attached to weapons, including a shotgun and a machine gun, were used for some shots. The combination of perspectives gives the film more than one way to evoke play: the follow camera keeps the character and surrounding space in view, while the weapon-mounted shots bring the audience into the character’s line of action. The sources do not identify specific camera or lens models, and the described techniques should not be taken to mean every scene uses the same approach. PetaPixel’s account of the film’s camera approach details Cregger’s comments.

A new story built around the shape of a game
Cregger has said he wanted to follow a character from point A to point B, a structure he sees as central to the games, while telling a new story in the Resident Evil world. The movie follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, on a mission during a disastrous night in Raccoon City. Cregger places the story alongside the world of Resident Evil 2, rather than making it a scene-by-scene adaptation or having it follow that game’s characters.
That distinction shapes the adaptation: the film borrows the feeling of moving through a dangerous game world without needing to reproduce a game’s plot. “I wanted to do a movie that was following a character from point A to point B, because that’s what those games do so well,” Cregger told the PlayStation Blog. He described the challenge as trying to “write a game as a movie.” His PlayStation Blog interview explains the new story’s relationship to the game world.
How the film carries game pressures into the story
The journey is shaped by the kinds of practical pressures that make survival-horror games feel precarious. Cregger described a weapon progression for the protagonist: he begins with a pistol, finds a shotgun, and eventually gets an MP5. Along the way, ammunition and injury matter. The weapons are not just a sequence of action props; their arrival helps evoke the changing capabilities and limited resources that define a playthrough.
Cregger has pointed to Resident Evil 2 as an early influence, recalling the need to track bullets and healing items. He also said the film draws on Resident Evil 4 for the look of healing items. The film’s environments change as the journey proceeds, with each new location bringing a distinct danger. The Atlantic’s September 2026 feature interprets those settings as level-like, with their succession helping sustain pace and dread; that is critical framing, rather than a production specification.

- In San Francisco, Jill Valentine is dealing with a zombie outbreak, Leon Kennedy is tracking a kidnapped DARPA scientist and Claire Redfield is investigating a monstrous fish. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they discover the trail of clues from their separate cases all converge on Alcatraz Island, where a new evil awaits their arrival.
Recognizable callbacks, not a scene-by-scene remake
Among the recognizable game references are typewriters associated with save zones, locks, and infected dogs. Cregger has also confirmed visual and thematic Easter eggs, including recreated healing-item visuals from Resident Evil 4. These details reward recognition, but they do not change the larger approach: the film creates a new story using familiar motifs and a game-informed way of moving through danger.
For viewers, the distinction is useful. The film’s aesthetic comes from both what appears on screen and how its story progresses: a shifting camera, a journey through increasingly dangerous spaces, weapon changes, and attention to scarce supplies. Those elements evoke playing Resident Evil without requiring the movie to adapt one specific game plot.
