GamesBeat reported that a 25-person team at the company’s Clubhouse Studio built it in five months. Its early audience grew quickly, but the “fastest-growing social game in history” label belongs to contemporary coverage, not a verified all-time ranking.
How was Café World made?
GamesBeat’s October 15, 2009 account describes a five-month development effort by Zynga’s Clubhouse Studio. General manager Roy Sehgal led a group of 25 producers, product managers, designers, artists, and programmers. The team brought varied backgrounds to a restaurant and food game rather than relying only on experience in video games. GamesBeat’s development report offers a contemporaneous snapshot, not a complete production history.
Former Zynga game and UX designer John H. Johnson says he contributed to the collaborative project before leaving the company ahead of launch. He recalls that the prototype was called “Romancing the Stove” and identifies stove-based cooking timers as a central mechanic. His portfolio account is a contributor’s recollection, rather than a full account of every design decision.
What did players do in the game?
The central loop was to prepare food and run a restaurant. Players put dishes on stove timers and managed the restaurant around those cooking cycles. The timer made waiting part of play: players could return to check on food and continue operating the restaurant.

Zynga later added features that changed how cooking worked. Its 2011 SEC registration statement cites a “spice rack” that let players use spices to accelerate a dish’s cooking. The filing presents it as an example of ongoing post-launch development, not as a launch feature. Zynga’s 2011 registration statement also describes the company’s broader practices of updating games and using analytics.
When did Café World launch, and how many people played?
Zynga’s 2011 filing says Café World launched in September 2009; GamesBeat gives September 30 as its Facebook debut. Contemporary reports published different early audience counts and intervals, so they should be read as separate snapshots, not combined into one precise growth curve.

| Report | Reported audience | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Game Developer, November 4, 2009 | 3 million users in six days | The figure was revealed in a presentation by Zynga vice president Hugh de Loayza. Game Developer’s interview does not reconcile this count with other reports. |
| GamesBeat, October 15, 2009 | More than 8 million users in the first seven days | A contemporaneous figure reported by GamesBeat. The article also attributes a higher count to AppData. |
| GamesBeat, October 15, 2009 | More than 15 million users by the report date | GamesBeat attributed this figure to AppData. The article does not establish that it is the same measure or reporting window as the six- and seven-day figures. |
The sources do not reconcile their definitions or provide an independent audit. They also use “users” without establishing a single comparable measure such as monthly active users. The figures demonstrate striking early reach, but not a rigorously verified ranking against every social game.
Why did Café World grow so quickly?
In a November 2009 interview, Zynga business-development vice president Hugh de Loayza credited traffic moving among the company’s games as part of Café World’s growth, while also acknowledging luck: “It’s a network effect where we’re driving traffic across multiple extremely large games. It’s a little bit of good fortune that we have.” That was his explanation in the interview, not an independently established causal analysis.

De Loayza also said Zynga tracked user behavior closely. The company’s 2011 SEC filing describes cross-promotion between games, continuing updates, and analytics as company practices. It characterizes Zynga games as free to play, with revenue from virtual-goods sales and advertising. Those filing statements describe the company’s business model at the time; they do not document every revenue source or mechanic specific to Café World.
Sehgal offered a complementary view of the game’s place in people’s routines: “It’s part of a daily habit,” he told GamesBeat in October 2009. That observation helps explain the fit between a game built around cooking timers and repeat visits, but it is not a measured account of why individual players returned.

Was Café World really the fastest-growing social game in history?
That phrase appeared in the title of GamesBeat’s October 2009 coverage, during the game’s early surge. It should be treated as a headline-era claim, not as a current or independently audited record. The reported user counts have different windows and attribution, and they do not supply a like-for-like comparison with other games. Zynga’s current company history associates the “fastest-growing” superlative with CityVille instead.
