Identify the exact printer and Windows setup
Driver compatibility depends on both the printer model and the Windows build. Before downloading anything, confirm that the label in Windows or on the printer says HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer. A DeskJet 5740-series driver is a different package and should not be substituted.

- Open Settings > System > About.
- Record the Windows edition, version, and system architecture shown there. Architecture is normally listed as 64-bit or 32-bit; Windows on ARM requires special handling.
- Note whether the printer will connect by USB or through your wireless/network connection. The installer may present different connection prompts.
Microsoft says compatibility problems can appear after a Windows upgrade, after a regular update, or when a driver was designed for another Windows version. Matching the edition, version, architecture, and exact printer model prevents many failed installations.
Download the current HP package
- Open HP’s support page for the OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer.
- Set the operating system to the Windows release you actually use, then choose the matching version when HP presents a version selector.
- Review the available downloads. A full software package generally provides more printer features than a basic print-only driver, but install only a package HP lists for your selected system.
- Save the download in the Windows Downloads folder rather than opening an unfamiliar file from a temporary browser location.
- Open the downloaded installer and follow its connection and installation prompts. Connect the printer by USB when requested, or select the wireless/network path and provide the requested network details.
- Allow the installer to complete. Restart Windows if the installer requests it, then print a test page from the printer’s Windows properties.
HP’s guidance emphasizes that knowing the precise printer model is crucial for compatibility and proper functionality. HP’s live driver inventory can change, so the package displayed for your exact operating system is the authoritative choice at the time you install.

Choose the right Windows installation route

Use Windows Update when HP has no matching download
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the first method for printer-driver updates. If the HP page has no package for your selected Windows release, install all available Windows updates and then retry printer setup.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install applicable updates.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and choose Add device.
- If Windows discovers the OfficeJet 5740, complete the add-printer wizard and print a test page.
Device Manager is another documented Windows route. Open Device Manager, locate the printer or an associated unknown device, choose the driver-update command, and allow Windows to search. If that search finds nothing, use the Add Printer workflow rather than repeatedly installing an unrelated package.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 support limits
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes under that support lifecycle statement. The OfficeJet 5740 package shown by HP may therefore differ by Windows release, and you should verify the current HP offering before promising that a particular package supports your installation.

For Windows 11, select Windows 11 explicitly on HP’s page rather than assuming a Windows 10 download is interchangeable. If HP does not list Windows 11 for the model, Windows Update or the built-in Add Printer workflow may still provide a compatible path, but the available features can differ from a full manufacturer package.

Windows on ARM: use the built-in printer setup first
Microsoft warns that some manufacturer installers can fail on Windows running on ARM processors. On an ARM PC, start with Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device. Follow the discovery and setup prompts. Use an HP installer on ARM only when HP provides device-specific ARM instructions or the installer is explicitly offered for that environment.
If Windows cannot find the OfficeJet 5740
Work through these checks in order before reinstalling drivers:

- Turn the printer off, wait briefly, turn it on again, and restart the PC.
- For USB, reconnect the cable securely and try another available USB port. For wireless printing, verify that the printer and PC are connected to the intended network.
- Open Windows’ printer troubleshooting tool and apply the recommended corrections.
- Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners for a partially installed or offline OfficeJet entry. Remove the failed entry only after recording any required network or queue information, then use Add device to try again.
Do not install a DeskJet 5740 driver simply because its name looks similar. A wrong model package can leave the printer partially detected while still failing to print or scan correctly.

Clear a stuck print queue
If the printer appears installed but jobs remain stuck, reset the Windows Print Spooler queue:

- Save or cancel any print jobs you still need.
- Open the Windows Services application, locate Print Spooler, and choose Stop.
- In File Explorer, enter
%WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERSin the address bar. - Delete the files in that folder. Windows may request administrator permission.
- Return to Services, select Print Spooler, and choose Start.
- Retry the print job or run a test page.
This removes pending queue files; it does not replace the printer driver. If the queue immediately fills again, remove the failed printer entry and reinstall through the HP package, Windows Update, or Add Printer route that matches your system.
Driver versus printer firmware
A Windows driver lets Windows applications communicate with the printer. Firmware is the software running inside the printer itself. They are separate updates and one does not replace the other.
The OfficeJet 5740 manual states: If a printer update is available, the printer will download and install the update, and then restart.
That description concerns the printer’s firmware behavior. It does not install the Windows driver described in this article. If the printer restarts during its own update, wait for the process to finish before turning it off.

Microsoft Update Catalog records an HP Officejet 5740 series Fax driver, version 34.0.28.48497, released April 3, 2014. That record lists Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 for x86 systems. It is historical metadata, not evidence of a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 package. Do not treat it as the preferred download for a modern installation.
Verify the installation
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and select the OfficeJet 5740.
- Confirm that Windows shows the printer as available rather than offline.
- Print a Windows test page.
- Test the functions you need, such as printing and scanning. A basic print driver may not expose every function included in HP’s full software package.
- If the test fails, note the exact symptom—undetected printer, offline status, stuck queue, or missing feature—then return to the matching troubleshooting section instead of changing several drivers at once.
When to change installation routes
- Use the HP model page when it offers a package for your exact Windows release and architecture.
- Use Windows Update when HP lists no suitable package or when you want Microsoft’s recommended driver-update path.
- Use Add device when Windows can discover the printer, especially on Windows on ARM.
- Use the spooler reset only for queued-job failures; it will not correct an incompatible driver.
- Recheck the model and Windows architecture whenever an installer reports incompatibility.
The safest sequence is therefore model verification, operating-system matching, HP’s current package, Windows Update if necessary, and then connection-specific troubleshooting. This avoids relying on an old 2014 catalog entry or on a driver intended for another 5740-series product.
