HP Victus 15 (RTX 4050) review: A good budget gaming laptop—but check the screen

The HP Victus 15 is a capable budget 1080p gaming laptop when equipped with an RTX 4050 and 16GB of RAM, but its dim display, modest battery, plastic build, and limited USB-C make the sale price and exact SKU crucial.

Verdict: The HP Victus 15 is a good value-oriented gaming laptop when equipped with an RTX 4050, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and discounted to around the historical $799.99 review price. It delivers solid 1080p gaming and a smoother-than-60Hz experience, but its 144Hz display is dim, its battery life is modest, and its plastic construction and limited USB-C connectivity reveal where HP cut costs.

The most important caveat is that “HP Victus 15” describes a broad family rather than one fixed configuration. This review focuses on the PCWorld-tested HP Victus 15 15-fb2063dx, with an Intel Core i7-12650H and GeForce RTX 4050. Other Victus 15 models may use an RTX 2050, RTX 3050, RTX 5050, or RTX 5060, different processors, 8GB instead of 16GB of memory, and either a 250-nit or 300-nit screen.

The HP Victus 15 is a good buy only at the right price

The RTX 4050 version of the HP Victus 15 makes sense as a plugged-in 1080p gaming machine, especially for buyers who want a relatively understated laptop with a full-size keyboard, number pad, and 144Hz display. PCWorld rated its reviewed configuration a strong value at $799.99.

That recommendation changed at the laptop’s reviewed $1,099.99 MSRP. At that price, better-equipped gaming laptops become available, so the Victus 15 loses much of its appeal. Those figures are historical review prices, not a claim about current retail pricing or stock. Laptop prices change frequently, and the right comparison is always the exact Victus configuration against current Lenovo LOQ, Acer Nitro, ASUS TUF, and similar budget gaming laptops.

For shoppers, the practical rule is simple: look for an RTX 4050 or better, 16GB of memory, and a display specification you can accept. Do not pay a large premium merely because a listing says “144Hz.”

Which HP Victus 15 is being reviewed?

The tested laptop was the HP Victus 15 15-fb2063dx. Its relevant specifications were:

Component Reviewed configuration
Processor Intel Core i7-12650H
Graphics Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU with 6GB of VRAM
Memory 16GB DDR4
Storage 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD
Display 15.6-inch IPS, 1920 × 1080, 144Hz
Webcam 720p
Wireless Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3
Battery 70Wh
Power adapter 200W barrel-style adapter
Weight and dimensions Approximately 5.06 pounds; 14.09 × 10.04 × 0.93 inches

This specification should not be applied to every Victus 15 listing. For example, HP’s 15-fa1093dx specification sheet describes a different system with a 13th-generation Core i5-13420H, RTX 3050 6GB graphics, 8GB of DDR4 memory, a 250-nit 144Hz display, and a 512GB SSD. It has the same general 15.6-inch Victus format, but it is not equivalent to the RTX 4050 review unit.

HP documentation for newer 15-fb3000-series systems lists configurations reaching an RTX 5060 Laptop GPU and a 15.6-inch 144Hz, 300-nit panel. That makes the model number and complete product specification more important than the Victus 15 name on the box.

Gaming performance: solid 1080p, not guaranteed 144Hz AAA gaming

The RTX 4050 gives the reviewed Victus 15 a sensible entry-level-to-midrange 1080p gaming profile. PCWorld found that it handled Baldur’s Gate 3, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p using medium or better settings. That is the right way to understand this laptop: it is capable of modern 1080p gaming when settings are chosen realistically.

The 144Hz display is more aspirational in demanding games. Newer AAA titles often will not run close to 144 frames per second at attractive settings on an RTX 4050 laptop GPU. The high refresh rate is more useful in less demanding games and competitive titles, where the system has a better chance of producing high frame rates. It also makes ordinary cursor movement and scrolling feel smoother than on a 60Hz panel.

In other words, “144Hz” describes the panel’s maximum refresh rate, not a promise that every game will reach 144fps. Buyers should choose the laptop based on the games they play and the GPU installed, not the refresh-rate number alone.

Lenovo Legion 5 15IRX10 15.1" WQXGA OLED, Gaming Laptop, Intel Core i9 14th Gen 14900HX 1.6GHz; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7; 32GB DDR5 RAM; 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD; Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7
  • Intel Core i9 14th Gen 14900HX 1.6GHz Processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7, 32GB DDR5-5600 RAM
  • 1TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD
  • 15.1" WQXGA OLED Glossy Display
  • Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4
  • 4.19 lbs. (1.90 kg),Windows 11 Home

Performance varies dramatically across the family. An RTX 2050 or RTX 3050 Victus 15 should not be expected to perform like the reviewed RTX 4050 model, while RTX 5050 and RTX 5060 versions occupy newer, higher performance tiers. Tom’s Hardware’s earlier review of a Core i5-12450H and GTX 1650 Victus 15 is useful historical evidence of this variation, but its results should not be mixed with the RTX 4050 configuration.

The 144Hz display is smooth but the reviewed panel is dim

The strongest headline feature is the 144Hz refresh rate. Games that can produce high frame rates look smoother, and desktop interactions feel more responsive than they do on a conventional 60Hz screen. The matte finish also helps reduce reflections, while the IPS panel provides good viewing angles and adequate sharpness at 1080p on a 15.6-inch screen.

The major compromise is brightness. PCWorld described the tested panel as a 250-nit display that can look dim in a bright room and is not well suited to outdoor use. It is functional for a desk or bedroom, but it is not the type of screen to choose for a sunlit workspace.

The reviewed panel also should not be treated as a creator-focused display. There is no expectation of HDR, G-Sync, or wide-gamut color performance, and the 250-nit panel is a poor fit for color-critical photo or video work. Some newer official Victus 15 specifications list a 300-nit panel and approximately 62.5% sRGB coverage, while other configurations list 250 nits and 45% NTSC. Check the individual listing rather than assuming all Victus 15 screens are alike.

Plastic construction keeps the price down

The Victus 15 uses an all-plastic chassis, but its restrained design does not heavily advertise that it is a gaming laptop. That understated appearance may appeal to students or buyers who want one machine for gaming and ordinary work.

There are visible budget compromises. PCWorld observed some chassis and keyboard-deck flex, a surface that attracts fingerprints, and some screen wobble when typing forcefully. At approximately five pounds and close to an inch thick, the laptop is portable in the practical sense, but it is not an ultralight computer. Its size and power adapter make it better suited to moving between home, school, and office than to constant travel.

Keyboard and trackpad

The full-size keyboard includes a numeric keypad and white backlighting, which is useful for spreadsheets, productivity software, and games that benefit from extra keys. The keys are reasonably tactile, but PCWorld found them somewhat wobbly with a soft bottom-out feel. The arrow keys are also relatively small.

The trackpad is usable for Windows navigation, but its physical click feels mushy. For gaming, a USB gaming mouse is the more comfortable choice, particularly for shooters and other games that require precise control. A 3.5mm headset can also be preferable to relying on the laptop’s speakers, which were noted for limited bass.

Ports are practical, but USB-C is limited

Connectivity covers the essentials:

  • One USB-C port rated at 5Gbps.
  • Two USB-A ports rated at 5Gbps.
  • HDMI 2.1.
  • Ethernet.
  • 3.5mm headset/audio jack.

The biggest omission is modern USB-C versatility. On the reviewed model, the USB-C port does not charge the laptop, so the included 200W barrel-style power adapter remains necessary. The port is also limited to 5Gbps rather than offering USB4-class connectivity. This is adequate for a mouse, external storage, and a monitor through the available ports, but users who specifically want USB-C charging or several high-speed USB-C ports should look elsewhere.

Thermals and noise are reasonable on the tested configuration

PCWorld reported that the reviewed Victus 15 did not become excessively hot or loud during gaming. Its rear exhaust directs hot air away from the mousing hand, which is a useful design detail for right-handed gamers.

That observation belongs to the tested configuration and should not be treated as a guarantee for every Victus 15. CPU and GPU choice, power limits, ambient temperature, fan profile, and chassis revision all affect heat and noise. A newer LaptopMedia review of the 15-fb3000 family described it as a capable entry-level gaming system with an understated design, while finding that a Lenovo LOQ Essential competitor handled CPU thermals better under load. The balanced conclusion is that the Victus is reasonably capable, not that it leads its class thermally.

For a desk-based setup, a 15.6-inch laptop cooling pad or adjustable stand may improve positioning or airflow clearance. It should be viewed as an ergonomic accessory, not a guaranteed way to increase frame rates or reduce temperatures; the reviewed evidence does not establish a measured performance benefit from one.

Battery life is modest

The 70Wh battery is enough for unplugged use in a pinch, but this is not an all-day work laptop and it is not designed for substantial unplugged gaming. The discrete GPU, high-refresh display, processor, screen brightness, Windows power profile, and game workload can all reduce endurance.

PCWorld’s 2024 review recorded just under six hours in a 4K video-loop test at 250 nits. Tom’s Hardware measured 4 hours and 47 minutes on a mixed Wi-Fi test at 150 nits using an earlier Victus 15 configuration. Those results are not directly comparable because the testing methods and hardware differed, but they point in the same direction: battery life is modest rather than class-leading.

Plan to carry the power adapter for gaming and demanding work. If portability and long unplugged sessions matter more than graphics performance, a lower-power productivity laptop will be a better fit.

Memory and storage upgrades: useful, but verify the SKU first

The reviewed laptop’s 16GB of RAM is a reasonable baseline for current gaming. A Victus 15 that ships with 8GB deserves more scrutiny, since memory capacity can become a limitation when gaming alongside browsers, voice chat, launchers, or other applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The family commonly provides user-accessible memory and M.2 storage, but the number of slots, memory generation, supported capacity, and exact service procedure vary by subseries. HP documentation for one current configuration explicitly lists two user-accessible memory slots, while other official specification sheets may differ. Before buying a Victus 15 RAM upgrade, match the full product number to HP’s applicable maintenance documentation. Do not assume that DDR4 and DDR5 modules are interchangeable.

The 512GB SSD is enough to get started, but modern games can consume that space quickly. For owners who need more internal capacity, a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD upgrade is a logical option. Confirm the supported drive format, slot availability, and installation requirements for the exact Victus 15 SKU before purchasing. An external SSD is another option if opening the laptop is undesirable.

Who should buy the HP Victus 15?

  • Budget-conscious 1080p gamers: The RTX 4050 configuration offers a sensible balance for modern games at medium or better settings.
  • Competitive and less demanding gamers: The 144Hz panel is genuinely useful when the GPU can produce high frame rates.
  • Buyers who want a restrained design: The plastic chassis looks less overtly gaming-focused than some alternatives.
  • Users who want a number pad: The full-size keyboard is useful for office work as well as games.
  • Shoppers buying at a substantial discount: The historical $799.99 review price made the RTX 4050/16GB configuration compelling.

Who should skip it?

  • Color-critical creators: The reviewed 250-nit panel is not a strong choice for accurate photo or video work.
  • Bright-room or outdoor users: 250 nits can be limiting in strong ambient light, though some newer Victus specifications list 300 nits.
  • Frequent travelers: At roughly 5.06 pounds plus a 200W adapter, it is not a lightweight portable.
  • All-day battery users: Runtime is modest and demanding work or gaming requires the charger.
  • USB-C-focused buyers: The reviewed port does not support charging and is limited to 5Gbps.
  • Anyone paying a premium for a low-end configuration: An RTX 3050 or 8GB model priced near a better-equipped RTX 4050 or RTX 5060 competitor is difficult to justify.

HP Victus 15 buying checklist

  1. Identify the complete model number. “Victus 15” alone is not enough. Confirm whether the listing is the 15-fb2063dx, 15-fa1093dx, a 15-fb3000-series model, or another SKU.
  2. Check the GPU first. Prefer an RTX 4050 or better for modern 1080p gaming. Treat RTX 2050 and RTX 3050 models as different performance tiers.
  3. Choose 16GB of RAM when possible. If the laptop has 8GB, verify the memory generation and upgrade path before buying.
  4. Read the display details. Confirm brightness, refresh rate, and color coverage. A listing for 250 nits is materially different from one listing 300 nits.
  5. Compare the actual sale price. Use Lenovo LOQ, Acer Nitro, ASUS TUF, and other current budget gaming laptops as price checks.
  6. Budget for storage if needed. A 512GB SSD can fill quickly with modern game libraries.
  7. Check the ports against your setup. The reviewed model has one 5Gbps USB-C port, no USB-C charging, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, and a headset jack.
  8. Expect to use the charger for gaming. Do not buy it expecting long unplugged gaming sessions.

Final verdict

The HP Victus 15 is not a universally excellent laptop, but the right configuration can be a very sensible budget gaming purchase. The reviewed 15-fb2063dx combines an RTX 4050, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and playable 1080p performance in demanding games. Its 144Hz panel adds smoothness, particularly in competitive games, even though most demanding AAA titles will not approach 144fps.

The compromises are equally clear: the reviewed screen is dim, battery life is limited, the plastic chassis and input devices are merely acceptable, and USB-C connectivity is dated. Buy the HP Victus 15 RTX 4050 when the price is clearly competitive and the exact specification matches your needs. At a premium—or with a weaker GPU, 8GB of memory, or an unsuitable 250-nit panel—another current budget gaming laptop may offer better value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the HP Victus 15 good for gaming?

The RTX 4050 configuration is a good budget choice for 1080p gaming. PCWorld found the tested system playable in Baldur’s Gate 3, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p on medium or better settings. Performance depends heavily on the exact GPU, so an RTX 3050 or GTX 1650 version should not be treated as equivalent.

Does the HP Victus 15 really run games at 144fps?

Not necessarily. The 144Hz screen can display up to 144 frames per second and makes compatible games feel smoother, but demanding modern AAA games generally will not sustain 144fps on the RTX 4050 configuration at attractive settings. The refresh rate is more useful in competitive or less demanding games.

Can the HP Victus 15 charge over USB-C?

The reviewed 15-fb2063dx cannot charge through its USB-C port. That port is rated at 5Gbps, and the laptop relies on its included 200W barrel-style power adapter.

How long does the HP Victus 15 battery last?

Battery life is modest and varies by configuration and test method. PCWorld reported just under six hours in a 4K video-loop test, while Tom’s Hardware measured 4 hours and 47 minutes in a mixed Wi-Fi test on an earlier configuration. Neither result represents every Victus 15 model, and gaming should be done while plugged in.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the HP Victus 15 RAM and SSD be upgraded?

Many Victus 15 models provide user-accessible memory and M.2 storage, but slots, memory generation, maximum capacity, and supported drives vary by SKU. Check the exact HP product number and applicable maintenance documentation before buying DDR4 or DDR5 memory or an M.2 NVMe SSD.

Which HP Victus 15 configuration should I buy?

For modern 1080p gaming, target an RTX 4050 or better, 16GB of RAM, and at least a 512GB SSD. Confirm whether the screen is 250 nits or 300 nits and compare the complete configuration and sale price with current Lenovo LOQ, Acer Nitro, ASUS TUF, and similar models.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the HP Victus 15 when it has an RTX 4050 or better, 16GB of RAM, and a genuinely competitive sale price. It is a capable plugged-in 1080p gaming laptop, not a bright creator workstation, all-day battery machine, or premium portable—and the model number matters more than the Victus name.
